Stop immediately, open the DVD and watch the original. Edward Woodward cannot be beaten in the role and Frank Skinner is no Russell Hunter.

IIRC, the BF Callans are adapted from the James Mitchell penned stories that were in one of the papers in the 60s. I have them in two books, they're very good, but become somewhat formulaic, not to mention shorter, as they go on.

As the original show is a TV series it would be The Sandbaggers not the audio Callan series that was sacrificed (I don't watch TV and listen to audios in the same time or place in the day), but apart from that I've been a keen Big Finish fan and collector since the 1990s and will enjoy them as part of my BF fandom regardless. In general terms though, I'm not into comparing 'better' or 'worse', although it's fun to look for recurring styles or ideas. I believe in each production being judged on its own merits, in all actors and crew members having a chance to create and perform without direct comparison, and art being in the eye of the beholder.

Just finished the audio Callan series from Big Finish and it was really, really good. Highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys old fashioned spy stories and listening to traditional radio plays. No big special effects, a simple musical theme, really good acting, and post-production that allows the plays to settle into an appropriate, steady pace. Two nice collections of four stories each, well done BFP.
