As some of you may already have noticed, I have a soft spot for brickfilms (probably fuelled by the fact that I had to translate several books on brickfilming and on Danish interlocking plastic bricks in general). Apart from the Galactic Smugglers series (*), there are lots of really fascinating brickfilms of various genres. To give you an overview of what is possible in this medium, I want to present my personal Top 12.

Let’s start with 12th to 10th place! These are what most people will associate with brickfilms – harmless but fun little comedies. But stay tuned – there are much more epic and artsy and even very disturbing brickfilms out there!

12 – VR Game by Alexander Studios
https://www.youtu...319LXFrBM4

While I am usually not a fan of endless chasing scenes, I do like the basic idea (although it is technologically impossible) and the weird solution!

11 – The Good Neighbor by Plastic Planet
https://www.youtu...6iJBJkqYeU

A hilarious romp!

10 – The Painter by Jwkublick
https://www.youtu...DhybMSos-8

Not much happening, but an adorable story.

(*) Don’t be put off by the first two installments; they are very simplistic but the story really gets going starting with episode 3. And there is even a cameo by Jenna Stannis (sort of ...) in episode 9!

Everything is awesome.
Men of Harlech cease your dreaming, can't you see their street signs gleaming...

With the next films on my list, we already get to the more meaty stories:

9 – The Legend of Leszek by AniMax
https://www.youtu...UnNXSD3_-s

(Simplified) retelling of an old Polish legend. Why do I have to think of Vila in Powerplay?

8 – The After Life Experience by Sean Willets
https://www.youtu...jFTbiJgNac

Warning! Very disturbing and not suitable for children!

7 – Secrets of the Lost Tomb by AlNickelsFilms
https://www.youtu...bZO0awx4bw

There are quite a lot of curse-of-the-mummy type brickfilms; unfortunately, most of them only consist of endless action scenes. This one captures the atmosphere of mystery surrounding old Egypt.

You know, for a moment there, I thought you liked films about bricks...

We are now slowly entering the realm of art:

6 – Through the Years by MooCJStudios
https://www.youtu...b9y35IEOII

A lovely vignette without a ‘storyline’ in the classic sense but nonetheless highly entertaining!

5 – Sheep by Studios Epsilon
https://www.youtu...m54kzGMm1g

A parable that doesn’t even feature minifigs as heroes!

4 – Bestia by France & Alex
https://www.youtu...GyDaiuVcVA

Who says that the medium of brickfilms doesn’t lend itself to epic storytelling? Pour yourselves a drink, get the prawn cocktail crisps out and settle down for a 20+ minute adventure based on historical events! The dialogue is in French, but there are English subtitles provided (real ones, not the usual automatically generated gibberish!). Warning: As the events are rather gruesome, this is not suitable for small children!

Well, I'm not ... at least I think so! Grin

But back to my top 12 list ... or better my top 13, because I stumbled upon another really great brickfilm after I had already posted the first batch! Hence I have to introduce a "0th place“...

3 – Indus by Aiwha
https://www.youtu...MWg8t6teHk

A simple and yet heartwarming story!

2 – A Fixed System by Aaron Fisher
https://www.youtu...UR0h782Fek

This could easily have been an episode of The Twilight Zone or Outer Limits!

1 – Time and Space by Sean Willets
https://www.youtu...N47bLrEw4I

A science fiction film with a distinct 2001 vibe!
Warning! Very disturbing and not suitable for children!

0 – Color by Goldbrickanimation
https://www.youtu...tZDRSZRJhM

This shows that in the hands of artists, brickfilms can be so much more than just following the adventures of cute minifigs.
