UK Rewatch - B9 Countdown
trevor travis
The episode: Barney Nine - Countdown (Carry On Ginger Mercenary) *
The date: Tuesday, June 1st, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Sadly, Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderperson don’t appear, but instead the Ginger Mercenary does – I think Paula might like him. This week, we find out another way that the Federation keeps control, despite only having a handful of personnel on a planet. And poor Jenna and Cally are on Libby reception - again!

Episode in a word: Grant.
Character to cheer: The Ginger Mercenary, who seems to have liberated more planets than Blake (which isn’t that hard, to be honest).
Character to boo: Vila is a bit thick for a second successive week. Opening the shuttle doors was stupid. Forgetting the corridor number could have been fatal to Blake. Staying alive definitely seems too complicated for Vila this week (to paraphase Avon from “Blake”).
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face / Hair: Tom Chadbon (Grant) was Duggan in the classic Doctor Who serial “City Of Death”, which was filmed around six months after this. He was also in an episode of Out Of The Unknown, in which his moustache definitely looked ginger, but don’t tell Paula I said that, or she’ll chase me around next year's Forever Avon convention with a Welsh Street Sign. Chadbon was also in Casino Royale for 18 seconds or something like that and in various episodes of “Casualty” for a bit longer. He appeared naked in something in the 70s, but you’ll have to ask Paula about that one!
Best exchange: “VILA: “Allow me. You see - the old magic's still there.” AVON: “The old ego, too.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Being Stupid

* The wearing of Ginger Wigs is optional for this rewatch.

Dear Mum,

Blake is looking for the Federation Control Center again, because things ended so well the last time went looking for it. We went to Albion looking for a Space Major and ran into an old friend of Avon’s named Del Grant.

This is the second old friend of Avon’s we’ve run into. The first was Tynus. Why do all of Avon’s old friends want to kill him?

With our typical bad timing we walked right into the middle of a battle complete with a Federation doomsday bomb. We had to rely on Avon and Grant to disarm it. I’m amazed we’re still alive.

Grant is rather severe, but he does have a sense of humor. I saw him smirk when Blake said he’d come looking for him if anything happened to Avon.

Turns out we sent the Space Major we were looking for with Blake. So, that’s one problem solved. One thing I’ll say about Albion, they need to put signs on their corridors.

Avon and Grant got the bombs disarmed. And now, Grant doesn’t want to kill Avon anymore. Pity. At least Grant was smart enough to not want to come with us, though I think I saw him slip Jenna a note with his address on it.

I hear that Grant organized rebellions on Arcos and others before that. Others, that's plural, so that's at least four planets that Grant has liberated counting Albion. And he doesn't even have Liberator.

Del Grant, what a guy!

Love, Vila

Ah, one of my favourite episodes: ‘Nation’ by Terry Countdown. Though I’ve a major hang-up about persistent glove-related inconsistencies.

Never thought of Avon as disarming.

Meant to add my favourite bit of dialogue-that-never-was-but-should-have-been, for this episode:

Avon: “We’ll need special equipment. Specifically a pickaxe and a screwdriver.”
Blake: “You may need to rethink the word ‘special’”.

Avon and Grant in a small room. The heat from the conflicting egos alone should have been enough to melt all the ice.

Quite. You'd also have thought (or certain members of this parish would) that enough heat would be radiated by Avon's trousers to do the job just fine.

Of all the episodes... It's just dawned on me that I am likely to miss this, as we are doing a major computer upgrade on Tuesday that could have me running around in circles all day.

Well, maybe the upgrade will come off without any hitches....
And maybe this time Blake will defeat the Federation.

Not sure whether the 'best guest' in this ep is the sandy freelancer or our friend Provine with his interesting line in haute coiffure. Provine, of course, would be a cracking name for a pharma product: maybe a pain-relief gel, or possibly a gentle laxative, or discreet over-the-counter erectile dysfunction medication.

Have no memories at all of seeing this episode on first transmission. But the first VHS tape of pre series 3 my Mother "acquired" in the early 80s had this ep on, along with Redemption and Pressure Point. She wanted the Terry Nation episodes.

So that tape was the first time I properly saw Jenna and Gan. Which was a big deal at the time. The 4th series was being repeated and since none of my friends from school had a video recorder at home, I remember my Mum getting several phone calls from other Mothers asking if one of my school friends could come to watch it.

My Mum being the person she was always insisted on them coming for 'tea' (which for those of you not familiar with North East England is the meal you feed your children when they get home from school) and made a big fuss of them.

I was rather popular at school for a while because of that tape and my Mum being a good cook. Happy times.

As for 'Countdown' itself. Due to my Mother getting a Video just to record the series 3 repeats I'd seen Rumours of Death multiple times before seeing this, so it sort of filled in some gaps and sort of... Didn't. I find the continuity between the two a bit odd.

Even as a young child though on first watching the tape I said to my Mum "I bet they fix this when the counter is on the last five seconds". Terry Nation was such a fab writer - but never afraid to take the obvious route - so long as it worked.

After we got our TV in 1963, I started seeing familiar names cropping up as being the writer...and every time I saw the name Terry Nation I knew I was in for a good story.
