UK Rewatch - B4 Horizon
trevor travis
The episode: Barney Four - Horizon (Carry On Space Primitive)
The date: Tuesday, April 27th, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which we found another way in which the Federation keeps control: by brain-washing the natives into doing their dirty work for them. Meanwhile, Vila discovers the delights of adrenalin and soma. Also, the Libby crew are daft enough to get caught and daft enough to leave Avon behind on his own – especially as the nearest leather store is only one sector away. Will he run out on them?

Episode in a word: Persuasion.
Characters to cheer: This episode includes the full realization of Action-Avon, as he stages a one-man rescue, although there have been hints since Space Fall that he can handle himself. Incidentally, Action-Avon is available from all good retail outlets. He comes complete with: (1) Proddy tool (2) A set of operational buttons on his shirt. Oh, and does Blake actually liberate a planet here? He certainly contributes to it. Good for him.
Character to boo: The Kommissar is as sneaky as a snake. It’s quite satisfactory when he meets his maker.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: William Square (Kommissar) also played a villain in “Doctor Who”. However, you may not have recognised him, since he played the Shadow in “The Armageddon Factor”, with his face covered by a mask.
Best line: What else could it be... “I am not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Guessing And Hoping.

Dear Mum,

We’ve had a tiring time of it. We ran from IMIPAK and just kept running, and running, and running…. right into the middle of nowhere. IMIPAK must have really got under Blake’s skin. It’s not like him to run from a fight. Not that I am complaining. Running away is my favorite strategy.

So, we followed a Federation freighter in the hopes they might be on their way to a Space Little Chef.

We followed it to a planet called Horizon. Blake decided it was a good place for a rest, even though it was obviously a Federation outpost of some kind. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, for one thing they didn’t have a Space Burger King, let alone a Space Little Chef. For relaxation the locals go down the mine. Reminds me of the West Country for some reason, like, WAY west. You remember that town where Uncle Trevor was attacked by a rogue street sign? At least Cardiff had The Gallifreyan Renegade Experience.*

I told you Gan has a limiter. Maybe that’s why he’s the only one the Liberator will let fetch more than one gun at a time. And I discovered a new drink. I had rather a lot of it. Now, if only I could get the hang of teleportation without falling over.

They captured us straight away. Blake and Jenna, too. It was terrible, Mum.

They tortured us. What’s worse, they made us do work.

Avon rescued us. I never would have thought it. I would have thought something would have to make him become a hero.

We’re all still very tired, so here’s hoping Blake has nothing dangerous planned for a while. I really should go help Gan, like I promised, but I’m going to have a lie down. There will be plenty of time to talk to Gan later.

Love,

Vila

*Paula and I absolutely love Wales. We’ve been all over it from Swansea to Snowdonia, from the Elan Valley to Harlech, (where Trevor Travis was first assaulted (deservedly so) by a Welsh Street sign). And my Mother’s maiden name was Owens, so I figure I’m allowed to make a few jokes.
Men of Harlech cease your dreaming, can't you see their street signs gleaming...

Dear Huggy
I managed to clear the desk of anything that could cause my keyboard to be harmed...but I was wondering, could this rather nice computer expert sort out Talking Pictures TV and make sure they don't cut off my other favourite series right at the crucial last dramatic scene?????

Most funny once again Huggy.

This is a favourite episode for me, not least because it's the first clear memory of mine from the series first being shown on BBC1 - but not the actual episode!

Although I can remember having nightmares about Gan going bad in Breakdown, the actual only clear memory of the first two series being shown is from the TRAILER for this episode. I just happened to be in the living room at the time a 'Tonight on BBC1' came on. It went something like this...

"A mysterious planet is discovered, Blake and the rest of the crew teleport down, leaving Avon on the ship alone."

Having seen that, it sent me running out the room screaming "Mum MUM" to tell her. So when Blake is worried about what Avon might do at the beginning of this episode, on first broadcast the rest of us were worried too - if Avon ever got the Liberator to himself, he'd be off.

Ah, but then he'd have been no better than the Feds they were trying to get rid of....a fact Avon was well aware of.
Hi all!
You're not sulking, I hope?

I almost said “morning!” But that would be geographically incorrect. I expect it is morning somewhere, though.
Hello, anyway. I’m here. Sort of. Not entirely, I admit, or I’d know what time it is...
