UK Rewatch - B2 Shadow
trevor travis
The episode: Barney Two - Shadow (Carry On Space Mafia)
The date: Tuesday, April 13th, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which there’s so much going on in a terrific episode. The major two plot strands are Blake finding himself on the wrong side of morality and not giving a jot about it; and a malign influence taking over Orac. While this is going on, Vila has the thrill and hangover of a lifetime, and will be lucky to finish the episode with his teeth intact and not part of a necklace.

Episode in a word: Moon-discs!
Characters to cheer: Gan, for showing that he has a conscious and there are levels he would prefer not to stoop to, such as getting caught up with the Space Mafia. Of course, Blake dismisses his arguments and pushes on regardless. In some ways, it’s a precursor of what happens again in three episodes’ time, this time with tragic consequences. Oh, and also Cally, for regaining much of her original spirit here – especially when she holds Space City to ransom to free the others. It’s great to see these two characters given something a bit more meaty to do, at last. Bravo Chris Boucher!
Character to boo: Sorry, Vila, while I think you’re terrific, this is not your finest hour – the blame for Hanna’s death lays firmly at your door.
Avon/Cally ‘Shipping Alert: “Whose is this?” demands Avon. He stops in his tracks when he finds out the Moon Disc belongs to Cally.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Karl Howman (Bek) played Jacko the painter, the lead character in the 1980s sitcom Brush Strokes. It was actually a pretty decent comedy, although it went on for a few series too long.
Best exchange: Lots of brilliant dialogue in this one, but it’s impossible to ignore: VILA: “Where are all the good guys?” BLAKE: “You could be looking at them.” AVON: “What a very depressing thought.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Mister Smooth.

Well, Mum, I got to Space City, and Blake finally told us what he wants to do here. He wants to make a deal with the Terra Nostra.

Seriously.

And he left me behind.

Seriously

So, naturally, I followed him down anyway, knowing he’d need help, only I wasn’t much help because I got a little distracted. Actually, I got a lot distracted. So distracted I don’t remember what I did, so I KNOW I had a good time. But, still, I was right, Blake didn’t know how to handle the Terra Nostra.

Blake left me behind, and he keeps calling the Terra Nostra contact, ‘Jenna’s friend,’ even after she said not to. And while I was resting up after my visit to Space City, Blake dismissed Cally’s well founded concerns.

And everyone is mad at me.

So, we went to blow up the Terra Nostra’s Shadow garden. It was really hot down there. Twin Suns, just like the planet Uncle Ben used to live on while he was stalking that teenage kid with the T16.

You remember our invisible rat in a box, Orac. Turns out it went all funny while I was away. And it did something to Cally. But the magic mushrooms the Terra Nostra use to make Shadow fixed everything.

Seriously.

I’m going for a lie down, now.

Love, Vila

Oh, Vila Smile These just keep getting better. Great summary of Shadow and "I'm going for a lie down now" seriously cracked me up.

I shall be hopping about with my Morris dancers this week but we’ll find time to watch it ourselves.

I agree entirely with TT’s assessment. I have to say, though, I have never booed Vila... but in this particular episode his metaphorical backside would definitely have met the toe of my metaphorical boot.

One more point for a certain subsection of this group: this episode features a rather nice computer expert dressed in some very fetching off-white surface clothes, with an extra shirt button left undone. The thought of it is enough to fry your eyeballs...

Song:

"Oh me lads - you should have seen us gather
Watchin' all the videos - Sarcophagus and Shadow
Some folks there were all dressed up - with guns and bracelets too
Didn't we have a lovely time at Edgecon 82"

I know I saw Shadow on first broadcast, but E82 is the first time I properly remember seeing it. Almost 40 years ago now (shudder). I think I watched it 4 times over that convention weekend. Fab times and Shadow remains my favourite episode to this day.

Also - was the first of at least three times I met Sue Little, who then became good friends with my Mum. Hello littlesue. (waves)

I shall be watching my DVD for this one, so I probably wont be posting much. However this episode is when I decided I didnt like Blake much. Not only is he morally dubious, but he also destroys a whole species!!

For me it was the way Blake was so dismissive of other's concerns. In this episode Cally is a prime example. She tries to tell Blake something is wrong, but he won't listen, and doesn't even take her seriously. That's bad leadership. And Pressure Point is coming up.

I pre- rewatched this yesterday and when they were quite merrily planting the explosives amongst a sentient species...well...the air was blue! And there were 2 other people at it as well, remember. Blake is not the only one with Moon Disk blood on his hands.

Do Moon Disks have blood? Grin

Interesting fanfic idea, though - Blake, Avon and Jenna on trial for genocide of the Moon Discs.

Indeed that is an interesting idea. Out of interest, has anybody done/seen a fic describing Vila’s escapades in Space City? I tried to do a mini fic for it for last year’s ficlet challenge but it wasn’t great. I’m sure somebody has done/could do a much better job!

I did a ficlet a few years ago. To save you looking it up, I'll post it below...

AVON: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating.

Just getting ready with me mug of tea, some biccies and choccie. It's suddenly got a bit chilly here, so methinks a blanket is in order. Mind you, once that silver leather outfit hoves into view along with those thigh high boots it may get a tad warmer!!!

For GanMiniMe - Vila's escapades in Space City...

(apols for hijacking the thread with fan fic Oops )
Partners in Crime

He was in real trouble now. Vila took another look and felt the panic rise. How was he going to explain this? More importantly, would he live long enough to explain? His eyes darted about, looking for somewhere to hide.

The service corridor was a stark contrast to the raucous glitz of Space City's casinos and nightclubs. Instead of music, laughter, jingling of coins and rattle of roulette wheels, there was only the hum of generators – plus rapidly approaching footsteps and harsh voices calling, "He went this way!"

Vila couldn't feign innocence or ignorance; not with his pockets full of credits and valuables liberated from their previous owners. Finding an unlocked door marked Additional Storage, he slipped thankfully into its dark interior. He listened intently until the footsteps passed, the voices arguing, "Not here - try the other corridor."

He breathed a sigh of relief. Safe, for now. There was probably nothing in here worth stealing, but he might as well have a look. Activating the lights, Vila suddenly found himself face to face with a young woman dressed in a maintenance worker's uniform, her astonished expression mirroring his own. They stared at each other, then Vila found his voice. "Nutmeg?"

"It's Nemmy, actually. Nutmeg's my stage name. What are you doing in here?"

"I could ask you the same question."

"I asked first."

"Hiding. There are people after me." Vila gestured at her uniform. "Good disguise. I almost didn't recognise you with..."

"With clothes on?"

Vila blushed. "I meant, in those clothes. Anyway, I wasn't watching your act."

"I know. I was watching yours."

"Eh?"

"Very slick, the way you got into customers' pockets while they were distracted by my performance."

"But you didn't finish your dance. You had to be replaced because you were drunk."

"I was pretending. I saw Viktor in the audience again, and wanted to escape before he requested my private services. Works every time."

Vila's teleport bracelet chimed. He rolled his eyes, but obediently raised his arm. "What do you want, Cally?"

"I want you back here. Get ready to teleport."

"Is that your mother?" Nemmy whispered. "Pretend to be drunk!"

"Wasting your time," Vila slurred. "I'm not going to be snatched away in the middle of... anything. Sightseeing." He looked round at the shelves of machine parts, tools and untidy spools of cable. "You should see some of the sights I'm seeing."

Nemmy unzipped her grey jacket, showing him a brief glimpse of the glittering costume underneath. Vila almost choked, but continued, "No. Perhaps you shouldn't." He managed to complete his conversation with Cally, despite Nemmy's giggling attempts to distract him.

"A tooth necklace?" Nemmy asked afterwards. "Ouch. Not your mother; she must be your wife."

"Cally's not ... oh, never mind. How was my drunk act?"

"Not bad. Keep it a bit more subtle next time. And remember to act hungover when you get back - pretend you've got a headache."

Vila sighed. "The trouble I'm in, I probably won't need to pretend."

Nemmy cautiously opened the door and stepped out into the quiet corridor. "All clear. We're safe to go. I'll return to my quarters, you'd better get back to the wife. But as we're partners in crime, I'd like my share of the loot, please." She held out a hand.

Vila passed her some of the contents of his pockets, and kissed her cheek. "Nice to meet you, Nemmy. Thanks for the advice."

"Bye, Vila. Mind your teeth!"

Vila watched until she disappeared round the corner. Then assuming what he hoped would be a convincing stance, moaning and clutching his head, he called for teleport.
