Some really good stuff this time. Well done, all of you. Well, here's what I came up with:

Hope

"Er...give me a minute..."

"So, listeners, while our final guest refills his glass, here's a recap. We had positives from Tarrant and Dayna, a 'no comment' from Soolin, which is perfectly OK with us. Freedom is what we stand for, after all. Plus a somewhat sideways outlook from Kerr Avon, that took us in a whole new direction. No problem with that, either, Avon, and thanks for playing the game. Well, we've heard from the others, Vila, so what's your view? Tell the subscribers here at Freecast your hopes for the future."

"Me? Well, I don't know really. I did have hopes once, but now...things have changed. Nobody's sure what's the right thing to do, are they? Humanity made a mess of their own planet, and then the Federation created a different kind of monster that ate everything it got its hands on. I'm not sorry the whole thing broke down. Sure, it was hard for everyone for a while. But I hope we never have another Federation. Not that people shouldn't cooperate. I mean, there might be some kind of aliens out there that don't go around killing each other, but I haven't met them yet. And I've met quite a few. Been around, we have. I mean, I go all the way back. I was with Blake, you know. Remember Blake?"

"I do."

"Yes, well, I'm not talking about you, Avon. We've all heard what you're hoping for, and I can't say I blame you, but is it right? That's my question. How do we know? Blake thought he was right, but a lot of people got killed because of him. Even some of the people he cared about. People I cared about...."

"You were telling us about aliens, Vila."

"Was I? Oh, yes, well, aliens would have their own answers, wouldn't they? But we'd spoil it for them. Wherever humans go, we seem to spread the infection: kill or be killed. That's our answer to everything. Goes right back to our prehistoric times, that does. Hunter gatherers. Defend your territory. Make a profit on the deal, whatever it takes. My hope has to be that we stop being human, I guess."

"That's a depressing thought, VIla."

"You asked what I think. And education isn't the answer, Dayna. What would you know about it anyway? They only teach what they want you to know. Most of it's not even true. It's all very well a lightweight like Tarrant - Oh, yes you are. I won't forget what you said about me...."

"But -I think we're getting off topic here - what can you offer instead, Vila?"

"Things can only get better, he says, but what proof does he have? You can't base hope on hope. There has to be something real, and we haven't found it yet. My hope is that we find it. Someday."

"I think that's probably the right place to end this conversation, so thank you Vila Restal, Dayna Mellanby, Del Tarrant, Kerr Avon and - may I say you're looking particularly lovely today, Soolin? That's it, listeners. Join us next time for 'The View From Where I'm Standing' and watch out for that all-important announcement about who we'll be visiting next."
You're not sulking, I hope?

That is excellent M1!

It is too complex to explain and so he blurts it in a half truth.

“I want it finished.”

Oh he wants it finished. But this is not about Blake. He can live or die as he chooses.

It’s what Blake represents that he wishes drowned (full fathoms deep) The hope he demands that Avon shares.

And he finds that he does.

He holds it, a seed so tiny he knows it cannot grow, yet still demanding his blood and sinew to shield it. It’s warmth forcing frozen fingers to flex.

He sees his future unrolling before him.

Grey waves of an unfamiliar ocean and so much effort to keep them at bay.

Endless searches through rocky scapes to find a patch of soil.

And it hurts. How it hurts.

The pain of torture is nothing compared to it. He has banished regret to a corner of his mind. But hope... no that he cannot, will not endure.

“I want to be free... of HIM.”
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

Here is the first of my little August prompt efforts. A bit of a dark one this time.
Lurena may be able to provide one of her piccies later once her internet remains constant...

This story follows on from the Advent Story in Xmas 2019, when we were last at the Amusement Park from Hell. In that, an unholy alliance had been agreed between Commissioner Sleer and the Fairground.
But for one of the Holograms that alliance weighs heavily on its conscience. It can only hope that ‘news’ of the Park’s rebirth reaches the one person who can help, because after all…

Hope is all there is

The ‘being’ that was Avon walked desolately among the side shows and stalls of the Amusement Park and sighed as the garish lights and music signalled the reopening of this behemoth of evil.
But at least it had stopped snowing.
There was only one person who could finally bring this monstrosity to a shuddering halt, but he was far away, convinced that his friends and their explosive device had at last put this park out of business.
But he was wrong…so very wrong.
The first ship full of unsuspecting Federation prisoners was on its way; its cargo totally unaware what grisly fate awaited them.
‘Avon’ suddenly found himself with company, as the Ringmaster fell into step alongside him.
“Do not fret,” the outlandishly dressed being advised him, “Soon, we will be welcoming another group of guests. Let us see how they find the park…or how that park finds them.”
“Doesn’t it concern you?”
“I am a Hologram, created from our original Master’s imagination. Concern is not part of my programming. But you…now you do concern me. And the park senses that all is not well with you. It would be wise not to risk banishment.”
“Banishment?”
“Yes. The park created you and it can easily destroy you.”
“Then the park is to blame. It chose to create me from the thought patterns of the man called Avon. But it chose to delve too deeply into his mind and I am the result.”
“I have dealt with the man called Avon. He would not be pleased to have his innermost thoughts on display.”
“And that is why I have made sure not to let him see me, but sooner or later we will.”
“And I hope it goes well…for both of you.”
“Hope? That’s all there is. Hope that he discovers that this malignant edifice is once more open and hope that he comes here and finishes it once and for all.”
“Even if it means the end of you?”
“Even if it means the end of me…”
“Hope? These new guests of the Federation are hoping that this will be a prison with a difference. A life sentence of ease and fun.”
“A death sentence you mean, with Commissioner Sleer watching no doubt.”
The ‘being’ that was Avon stopped.
The ride that had enabled the machine, which controlled this Amusement Park, to delve into the innermost thoughts of Kerr Avon was before him.
The Ghost Train; its carriages waiting patiently to take its next victims for the ride of their life.
Somehow, the being that was Avon had to find a way to tell his namesake that all was not well.
The Ringmaster smiled and went on his way to greet the new contingent of guests.
Avon stood rooted to the spot as the prisoners began to mill around him.
He stared up at one of the cameras hoping that somehow he would be watching.
Hoping that the computer called Orac would pick up this transmission.
Hoping that he would come…otherwise all hope would be lost.

And now here is the second prompt. It follows on from last month’s tale.
Hopefully, once her internet is stable, Lurena will be able to sneak a piccie over…

Just Desserts

“If you don’t get this door open, Vila, it will be the end of us.” Avon stated matter-of-factly.
“All right, all right! Stop hassling me and I’ll do it…”
Blake joined in the urging, “Orac said quite clearly, there’s a bomb behind this door. If it goes off..”
“All right, but the sequence keeps changing…”
“Are you sure?” Avon asked.
“If you don’t believe me…you try it.”
“Blake this is serious…”
Both Jenna and Cally were standing apart from the group.
“Well, it is your fault, Avon,” Jenna pointed out.
“MY fault?”
“Well. It was only trying to help...”
Cally sighed, “And you pointed a screw driver at it and threatened it.”
Avon brushed off that criticism, “Blake, if that Robot of Vila’s can somehow manipulate the electrical circuits on this ship…any ship, that could have serious consequences, for us…for Mankind in general.”
“My concern is with this door and that Robot making a bomb,” Blake replied, “We’ll worry about electrical circuits later.”
“What’s that whirring noise?” Vila asked, “Oh no, it’s drilling through the bulk head. We’re all going to be sucked out into space! Cally and Jenna seem to have the right idea…get to the nearest life capsule...”
“What?” Blake queried.
“Look, they’ve gone…”

Ten minutes later, and Vila stood back, defeated.
“It’s no good, every time I find the right sequence, it changes it. We’re all finished and it’s all your fault Avon…”
“It was you who gave it that cordless vacuum…or have you forgotten so soon?”
“I wonder what sort of bomb it will make, “Blake murmured…
Then the galley door slid open…

Standing in the middle of the galley was Vila’s Robot, resplendent in an apron, standing proudly by his culinary efforts laid out in front of him.
Cally and Jenna stood either side of the Robot, beaming.
“When Orac said bomb,” Jenna began, “he didn’t exactly say what sort of bomb…”
“This is a Bombe, a delicious dessert,” Cally explained, “and we have meringue nests over there, sorbets, ice-cream….just to say sorry he says.”
The three men were dumbstruck.
“In case you’re wondering, “Jenna said, “we came through the inspection channels, they go all over the ship.”
“And Robbie said he had the idea about all these desserts from Freedom City. Apparently, they do a rather nice selection there.”
Avon and Vila exchanged nervous glances.
“We...we wouldn’t know about that, “said Vila.
“No, we never had the opportunity to visit,” Avon concurred.
Blake eyed both Vila and Avon with a great deal of suspicion, but thought better of pursuing that suspicion. He knew that neither would admit to anything.
“Oh well, “Vila sighed, “We may just as well taste this bombe. Pity to see it all go to waste, after all Robbie was just trying to be helpful.
“Well Avon, “Blake began, “Have you anything to say to Robbie? Avon?”
But Avon was busy…discovering the joy of a Knickerbocker Glory…..

OC Virn, I love Vila’s insights in your entry! It seems very fitting somehow that he should be the one to voice the things many of us have discussed about the whole saga. As One of the crew memorably said: “Out of the mouths of drunks...”

Anniew and Littlesue- those were both so powerful and bleak. Both fantastic. And what a contrast in Littlesue’s next entry! There was a twist I didn’t see coming- a dessert bombe as opposed to a big-bang type bomb!!

I’ve also really enjoyed the jokes about Avon and ice cream this month...

HOPE

An abandoned world in a forgotten system. A place to lay low, for now. They could barely believe - or remember - how they had made it out alive.

After a preliminary recce orbit, the small ship settled on the remains of a landing pad at the outskirts of the sole township. Tarrant flicked switches, taking the drives off line, wincing as the healing pad and plastiskin stretched and twisted. He slumped back into the flight recliner, letting himself sag for just a moment, staring out the cockpit window in front of him.

"Lets hope there's some survival ration packs in there," he said, nodding at the grey shapes of the buildings. He took a sip of recycled water and held out the flask. "It's been a while since we've eaten and those things last forever."

"We could use some ammunition too," Soolin replied grimly, inspecting the plasma clip from her gun. She slotted it back in place, holstered the weapon and took a small mouthful from the flask.

Conscious that day was ending, they set out towards the ghost town. Soon the long shadows cast by the husks of damaged vehicles littering their way would disappear into the ever-darkening ground, but the hard knots in their stomachs forced them on, towards the purpling silhouettes ahead.

The township was made of a series of connected prefabricated buildings, protected by a storm wall. Slowly they made their way up the large concrete ramp, towards a shredded corner of the reinforced entry doors.

Soolin shined her torch on the sign beside the massive doors.

Tarrant shined his torch into the darkness beyond. "Let's hope we get a bite," he said.

They clambered in through the hole.

And finally...

Sorry the picture is in link form at the bottom, it’s pretty integral to this entry and it was the only way I could get it on here.

**************

He had never been in a tighter spot. He had never had so little hope of rescue or escape. Every possible avenue had been exhausted; every avenue except one. It was so very unlikely, such a long shot that it almost seemed fruitless to try it except for that most irrational and unreliable of human emotions: Hope. And now, cornered and alone, and almost certainly doomed, Avon hoped.

He hoped that Servalan was afraid of birds.

Anniew and Ganminime, thank you for your kind words. I'm gradually getting towards the last bit of the All the fun of the Fair Saga....until a prompt from PC suddenly creates another story to add to it. This saga started with a short prompt about bumper cars, but has turned into something far darker. It was the much longer Ghost Train part that made it darker and its grown from there...but I still like doing fun ones.
Goodness knows what Robbie the Robot will get up to next and Vila is still looking for the elusive Brandy Bottles.
I really must sit down and put all these sagas together.....

How about Vila trying to win a bottle of brandy on a hoopla with some sort of macabre twist? Just a thought x

The hoopla stall that throws back has already turned up in the story All The Fun Of The Fair, a much longer story that evolved from that first prompt with the bumper cars. Thankfully, Tarrant was taller than most of the 'guests' who tried their luck with that stall...and then Tarrant suggested that Avon have a go...and managed to stop the hoop in its tracks. You can find this story on Lara and Sue's stories.
But, I could use that idea somewhere else, couldn't I? Hmmmmmmm........
