Who was the first Federation trooper to speak?
MrEModels
Indeed, does anyone know if anyone in the Federation Guard outfit actually spoke before we saw Cheney in "Bounty"? Or was he the first?

Yes, in the first episode The Way Back.

MrEModels
Really? I thought they were just faceless, voiceless guards in that one!

I was thinking of the scene where the Federation guards move in to disrupt the rebel meeting. Blake hides and a guard approaches him, but at the vital moment another guard gives an order "Unit 3, Move in" thereby saving Blake's skin.

Confirmed.

Ah, yes - the "Unit 3" over the radio telling the guards to move in, is sound associated with them, but we don't see a guard talking. I've been looking at the early episodes and they do all seem to be voiceless. I think it is Cheney in Bounty that has the distinction of being the first to talk. He's not the first to take his helmet off - that would be the guard with the 'tache in Seek Locate Destroy, but he is the first to reveal that the helmet can flip up.

I think the Federation troopers being silent makes them scarier.

MrEModels
Exactly! They have that over the Star Wars Stormtroopers, but the Stormtroopers have the win of (apart from Finn) you never see them with the helmets off

Indeed, good observation. There is no enemy like the silent, faceless enemy.

From a cyincal and pragmatic point of view, knowing the show's tight budget, making the troopers silent also makes the extras who play them cheaper.

I've just had another thought: what if some of the Federation troopers are cyborgs (half-man, half-machine)? Some are human and biological (as seen in various episodes), while those who never take off their helmets or even speak might be automated man-machines, who, unlike Mutoids, still retain some sense of identity (maybe I've been watching too much sci-fi anime, but it's striking how innovative B7 was and still is).

MrEModels
The subject of bionic rebuilds, the how much and why's, are a subject of Episode 5 of the Blakes 7 In Character podcast, devoted to the Mutoids Smile

Wouldn't Ray in Seek-Locate Destroy be the first trooper on screen to talk?

MrEModels
I discounted Rai as, though he wears the uniform, he's obviously a high ranking officer, to be a Servalan confidente. And not a trooper. Looking at the episode closer though, we do have Base Commander Escon, who has the helmet with him when he sits down to talk with Travis. So, Ian Cullne, take a bow!
