Ficlet Challenge: March 2022
purplecleric
The phrase prompt for this month is:

SCARLET FEVER

And for the second challenge:

Write a piece without using any of the character's names.

Happy writing!

"Well, if you think I'll marry you just to pay for the bonnet I won't."

"Jenna?" Blake Queried.

"I can shoot straight, if I don't have to shoot too far."

"Jenna, are you all right?"

"You're a conceited, black hearted varmint. I don't know why I let you come and see me."

Blake hit the intercom. "Cally, get up here."

Cally ran onto the flight deck. "Blake, what's wrong?"

"You'd rather live with that silly little fool who can't open her mouth except to say 'yes' or 'no' and raise a passel of mealy-mouthed brats just like her."

Cally balked. "Blake, how long has Jenna been like this?"

Blake answered, "Since we visited the plantation planet. What's wrong with her"

"Well, Fiddle Dee Dee!"

Cally replied, "I'm afraid there's only one thing it could be. Scarlett Fever."

So this month I have somehow managed to put both prompts into one story. And Lurena has weaved her magic again!

A Touch of Scarlet

He had always wanted to be different.
Stand out from the crowd, so to speak.
And so it was that he found himself outside the fashion warehouse; so it was called. But it looked, for all the world, like some small retail outlet.
He hadn’t even managed to shut the door when a very attentive service robot arrived at his feet.
“And how is sir today? What would sir be interested in? We have a vast array of designs. Just the sort of things that someone of your bearing would appreciate.”
“Well, now…”
“Let me guess, something that would make you stand out in the crowd? Something that only you would wear…just to be different, of course.”
“Well now…”
“Measurements sir? The moment you walked in the door our splendid scanning machine did just that.”
“It did?” He looked around him. What other hidden devices were there?
“We have exactly what you are looking for. My colleague will bring it out in a few seconds.”
“A few seconds? But I…”
“We don’t like to keep our customers waiting. Perhaps sir would like to step into the changing room. It’s ready for you now.”
“It is?”
“Step this way sir…”

He admired himself in the full length mirror.
It was indeed different. A red leather outfit that fitted exactly.
“My compliments to the tailor.”
“Thank you sir.”
“How much do I owe you?”
“On the house, sir. It will be a great pleasure for us to know that others will see you and come to our establishment. Good day sir.”

The two service robots watched as the customer strode out resplendent in his shiny new red leather outfit.
“How much more of that stuff have you left?” the first robot asked.
“Enough for one more. Look, it is not my fault that the ordering machine ordered the wrong colour.”
“But why scarlet?”
“But at least we can tone the colour down, a little. At least our customers aren’t walking round looking as if they have Scarlet Fever.”
“Quick, we have another client and she looks gorgeous.”

The client walked in and she wasn’t alone.
Two Mutoids were with her.
“That man,” she purred, “the one who just left here. What did he want?”
“A new outfit which we provided, Ma’am. And how can we help?”
“I have a function to attend; one which, shall we say, requires one to dress rather garishly. My own costumier has been unable to find something outlandish, but still stylish.”
“And stylish it will be Ma’am. Would you care to step into the changing room? It is ready now.”
“That is very efficient.”
“That is my middle name, Ma’am.”

She admired herself in the full-length mirror.
A glorious red full length dress with an additional embellishment of a large, fine netted accessory which surrounded her neck.”
“This is just perfect. It will fit in very well at Freedom City.”

“Who was that?” the second robot asked after the client had left.
“I do not know, but has that dye all gone now?”
“Every single drop.”
“Thank goodness. Just make sure the machine is thoroughly cleansed. I don’t want to see a single scarlet spot on ANYTHING!”
