John and Lizzie seem to have been adopted by Greg and Jenny... which is quite sweet.

It's been going on since they slept together two weeks ago... fully clothed, of course, as this was the BBC in the 1970s!

having a horse box i a good idea - you could go to a warehouse and load it up very well - plus you could sleep in the back.

a clamp is where you put root vegetables & cover them with sand & straw to keep the air out so they last 6 months or so.

trevor travis
probably one of the most positive episodes, but not a mot of drama.

The sooner they settle down to farming and animal husbandry, the better. And the mansion is defensible.

that episode was a bit slow at the beginning & a bit all over the place but still pretty good. it's interesting to see how many different type of people have survived.

My review from a previous rewatch:

(1.7) “Starvation” by Jack Ronder
Directed by Pennant Roberts

“Abby, I think we’re home”.

The changeover episode of the first season, as our three leads find a few more friends as well as somewhere to settle.

It’s an episode that it is not as strong as those we’ve seen so far. Being a pure sci-fi series (i.e. without the fantasy elements contained in e.g. very much in Doctor Who, and to a smaller extent in B7), “Survivors” places a strength on credulity less than those other series, there’s no Moloch, or the Slave Chasing Machine, etc.

However, this episode does contain some unintentionally funny scenes as Greg, Jenny and the children are menaced by a pack of “wild dogs”. Wild dogs? They seem to have escaped from Crufts! To be fair by the Beeb, they realise the mistake, and next time we see a pack of wild dogs (in “Mad Dog”), they give us a group of dogs which really are salivating and scary.

The threats in this episode don’t really work, coming from the aforementioned wild dogs and a reappearing Tom Price.

However, there’s also much to like about this episode. It asks a very sensible question, once the available supplies run out, how does the human race feed itself? Mrs Cohen and Wendy are likeable characters, but clearly not capable of looking after themselves on their own – you can’t live on nettle soup!

Tom Price has been looking after himself on that score by hording supplies in a van, but at the same time, he looks a mess, even more like a tramp than before. He also needs people to look after him – but in another way.

Incidentally, the scenes between Wendy and Tom are slightly creepy and foreshadow events to come in “Law And Order”.

We are then introduced to our new home for the next seven episodes, Hampton Court… or rather, the Grange, in the fiction of the series. It is a wonderful old house and it makes perfect sense that the Survivors would choose something like here to settle.

In the meantime, Lizzie discovers the loveable but simple Barney in the house – she can scream for England, Bonnie Langford you have opposition!! Again, the scenes between Barney and Tom foreshadow “Law And Order”.

An episode which starts with many of the characters hungry, ends with a shared meal at the new house and the discovery of further food, both vegetable and animal. The ending is one of the most optimistic of the series.

TT Og heads out of ten:
