I didn't want to say beforehand, but this is one of the grimmest episodes, implying there's no escape if you're not immune.

Review from a previous rewatch:

(1.5) “Gone To The Angels” by Jack Ronder
Directed by Gerald Blake

The remarkable consistency of the first season continues, with what is quite a grim story.

It starts with Abby on a downer. We return to the Railway Station and the School, and the presence of a School Mini-Bus briefly raises Abby’s hopes only for them to then to be crushed again. This time, it seems to hit her quite hard. The shock had yet to hit Abby in “The Fourth Horseman”, where she chats away with Bronson (the deaf teacher) quite merrily shortly after waking up and finding everyone dead. Now a few months on, she’s finding it hard. Even a blossoming flower can leave her emotional.

In the meantime, Greg and Jenny encounter John and Lizzie. They see the Death from quite a different perspective – from that of a child. It could have unbalanced the whole series bringing in child regulars, but instead it adds another dimension to it. It’s a nasty world which is now out there, but children are still children in their behaviour. It’s another sign of life moving on, no matter how difficult.

There are several aspects to this story (quite often we have an A Plot and a B Plot in Survivors). Firstly, there’s Peter Miles putting in a wonderful performance as the slightly nutty Lincoln. He just can’t cope with the new world at all. He doesn’t have anyone and desperately needs company. In some ways, he’s not totally unlike Jenny was three episodes ago, although she wasn’t nearly as unhinged. Unfortunately, it’s his lack of balance which makes it impossible for them to take him on, he could shoot them at any moment, just as he accidentally shoots Greg earlier on. It’s in this episode, after the hints of the previous week, that Greg and Jenny get it on.

While this is happening, Abby encounters the Angels, three religious men who live a remote life. Religion is sometimes abused by those seeking power, but these men are totally harmless. When the rest of the gang catch up, Matthew, in particular, proves that he is great with kids. But then we notice him reaching under his arm pit - it’s a real Oh No!!!! moment. The Angels have caught the Death.

It’s here we realise that the Death is impossible to escape. You can’t run away from it, because the moment you come into contact with a carrier, you catch it as well. So eventually everyone is subjected to the 1 in 5000 (or so) chance mentioned in the previous episode; no country will have escaped. This confirms what Bronson said in the first episode – he was a radio ham who had found it had gone quiet all around the whole world.

There leads to a tragic scene. We’d seen Matthew playing with Lizzie, pretending to be asleep. The scene is visited with Lizzie again approaching Matthew. But this time he doesn’t wake up. He’s dead. Some fantastic acting in this scene by young Tanya Ronder, the daughter or writer Jack Ronder.

The death has affected the younger John is a slightly more troublesome way. His “You’ll be dead soon, goodbye” followed by a smile suggests this young lad has been slightly warped by seeing so much death around him at an early age.

Not surprisingly, Abby is rather affected by having “killed” the Angels. The closing scene suggests that John and Lizzie will be a positive influence on the group, as they just want to play, therefore giving Abby a purpose at a time she might have just collapsed.

I did have this down as one of the weaker scripts from Season 1, but watching again, I think it’s yet another strong episode.

Abby "kills" three men, and Lizzie finds Matthew's dead body. I consider it one of the grimmest episodes, suggesting you can't run or hide from the Death.

Yes the thought had struck me too. I guess it depends on what you find horrifying. For me, children are natural survivors. There's a life lesson for Abby and co there. And no dogs got hurt or mutilated anybody in this ep. Bonus!

It's sad, tragic even but that is life now and the sooner they get used to the idea, the better they'll get on. I am more worried about the looneys running around making themselves tyrants in a small gene pool.

Or...I had been expecting something a bit doom laden when I got in from work yesterday which, in the end, came to nothing. Thankfully. So perhaps I was so relieved that even a doomsday scenario looked cheerful in comparison.
I promise to be thoroughly miserable next week!
Actually, that sounds like an oath we should all make just prior to starting each episode...Grin
