Ron Thornton 1957 - 2016

B7 Cast and CrewWe are sad to report that award-winning visual FX pioneer Ron Thornton has passed away at the age of 59, following a long illness.

Best known for bringing CGI to television, most notably on Babylon 5, he won an Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in visual effects for his work on Babylon 5: The Gathering and was nominated for further Emmys on episodes of Star Trek Voyager, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the film Superfire.

Prior to moving to America, he worked for the BBC where he created props and miniatures for Doctor Who, Blakes 7 and Tripods.

Among his work on Blakes 7, he particularly deserves praise for the Scorpio. The main studio scale model Scorpio was over 4' long, and was built by Ron in his living room! Destroying the Scorpio in Blake took quite a bit of work, as it was a 'robust model'. Ron also built the Orbit shuttle and other props for the series.

He is survived by his wife, Lada. RIP
