* SPOILER FREE * review

Back from getting some much need fresh air after spending all yesterday on the sofa...

As I said before, GC I'm not a big comic book/superhero fan so I don't know how well it worked within comic book lore but I thought it rocked.

The thing that usually puts me off about this genre is that things all get a bit silly, and the characters are caricatures and show their two dimensional origins. The result is usually a bit of harmless fun that kills a couple of hours with the kids.

But DD was a superhero series tailor-made for a B7 fan - talk about moral ambiguity... enough angst to reveal the conflicts, not so much it wallowed in it. The necessary 'superhero' stuff like kevlar suits and supersenses were either subtle, downplayed or introduced gradually so they were easier to swallow.

Visually it was stunning - almost Bladerunner in style. The music was subtle and appropriate (although I'm sorry they didn't use the music from the trailer because that was one hell of a song - any idea who it's by?) And the lack of CGI was refreshing.

Which brings me nicely onto the fight scenes in all their bone-crunching, blood-laden, perfectly choreographed glory. Perhaps I'm just bloodthirsty - but I like violence to be, well - violent... and this was. And people got wounded, and tired etc.

The characters and plots were varied and interesting - I imagine I missed the relevance of some as I'm not overly familiar with the Marvel universe - and all could have stood to being developed further - in fact, this could have been twice as long and still riveting.

Downside? I felt the balance was a little off - the violence was extreme but other 'mature' themes (sex, drugs, swearing) were PG-rated which reduced the credibility a little. And we're going to have to wait for a helluva a long time for Season 2 as they've got all the other Defenders to deal with...

The standout? KINGPIN! D'Onofrio is why I came to be watching this - he is an astonishing actor (and a bit of a Marmite one - you either love him or hate him) and I wasn't surprised by his superb performance. I was surprised by the back story which combined with a great script and great actor, made Fisk a truly memorable baddie that dominates every time he appears on screen. D'Onofrio has a knack for going, in a heartbeat, from small, subtle and nuanced to immensely over-the-top and scenery- chewing in a way that would rival Brian Blessed and he was perfectly cast. The temper tantrum at the end of Ep 4 was shocking in its brutality and childishness. OK that's my fangirl squee over...

Apart from D'Onofrio, the best thing about this for me was that there was good and bad in everyone - and sometimes you were rooting for the 'bad guy' more than the 'good guy' - and it made me *think* about the moral dilemmas presented.

So that's my spoiler- free review - I'm happy to go into an episode by episode discussion, if you'd like...

As a long time reader of Daredevil I was psyched for this than the Avengers movie. I like the movies, but never could get into the Avengers books. DD though has always been one of my top 5.

Its midnight and I'm tired so I won't say to much til tomorrow, but I will say they nailed it.

They got the tone and the characterisations of the characters down pat and my fave DD character Foggy became my favourite character in this as well.

I get a sense that everyone behind these Marvel projects loves the source material and it shines through. I never feel they are slaves to the comic books, but instead they mine them pretty faithfully.

This looks like a show that might interest me, but there's no mention of a UK dvd release anywhere. As I never watch online or download television, is it likely that it will be made available at some point or stay as 'download only' forever? I'm also looking forward to Agent Carter, but have no idea whether that will ever hit the store shelves either.
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

I still can't read eBooks, I need print so I'm sorta with you there.

However Netflix is pretty cheap and you can always cancel after a month. I think usually first month is free

@ SD - some Netflix shows do eventually make it to DVD but I don't know if DD will be one of them. I got the free month (you get full access) but am going to keep it and cancel my Sky now that Fortitude's finished. Much better value - I watch it via the XBox/TV.

*SPOILER ALERT*

@ GC - Foggy was great. He could so easily have been the pitiful comic relief side-kick but he was funny in a way that had me laughing with him not at him and he was smart too. When he discovered Matt's secret identity, his hurt and confused anger was painful to watch. Interesting that the sidekick and the bad guy were the one's to get some bedroom action and not the hero, eh?

I also liked the other 'sidekick' - Wesley, Fisk's right-hand man. In fact, their relationship seemed closer (almost co-dependent) than Matt & Foggy. Wesley was wonderfully calm amidst the violence and I'd love to know how he came to be working for Fisk and what inspired that depth of loyalty. Shame we'll never find out.

Damn, I totally forgot this is Netflix so it means the whole series out! I need to get it.

**Further spoilers**

Yes! It was some great writing and acting, Foggy's hurt and anger would probably have been annoying and whiny in any other show. The whiny sidekick who just doesn't get it, but Elden Henson plays him with heart.

I also want to point out that religious stuff usually annoys me, its either heavy handed or preachy, but here it works. Matt's conversations with the priest were some of my favourite scenes.

The fight scenes felt as real as well. As you mentioned Matt and others get tired as the fights go on. I think a good example is the episode where DD goes to get the kid back. He's hurt and stumbling, but he can't sto or he and the kid will probably die or worse.

*SPOILERS*

Yes, it was good to see the 'superhero' actually get hurt and need time to heal and recover (even if it was accelerated by his meditation) - I thought Claire Temple was a good character, would have liked to see more of her and not just patching Matt up. I've only ever seen Rosario Dawson in Fire by Fire and Chelsea Walls and she didn't impress me much (but maybe that was due to the material she had to work with, which wasn't great). However she was much better in this.

I, too, was a bit wary of the religious element but it proved to be well-handled and the priest was excellent. Not trite answers, just thought -provoking discussion. And I think that the format helped - a 13 hr 'movie' really allowed the characters to take their time to develop and linger on some of the important elements.

One episode that didn't work so well for me was 'Stick' Maybe its because I'm not familiar with the Marvel Universe, but I didn't get the Japanese connection, Black Sky or the mystery figure sat cross-legged that Stick meets. Perhaps this will be followed up in later series? However, I really enjoyed the interaction between Stick and Matt. And we got a DD/Fisk fight - so all was not lost...

And going back to Fisk (because I just have to) I really loved the way the painting formed an arc of its own and that once we'd seen his childhood flashbacks, we knew why his hand was twitching when we first saw him looking at the painting in the gallery. Little touches like that are a D'Onofrio trademark - one of the reasons he's such a fascinating actor to watch.

You didn't miss anything, I think it was some foreshadowing for whats to come. I can tell you if you like, more about what it COULD be. I have some theories as I'm an avid DD fan. I liked Stick as a character though, he gave Matt the tools he needed to survive, but he was also a complete jackass. The part where Matt gives him the bracelet was heartbreaking. I was cheering when Matt finally beat the hell out of him.

The white wall motif that ran through his character arc was fantastic. D'Onofrio was a powerhouse in this show and if it was up to me I'd throw some trophies at him, but people in charge of giving those out tend to look down at genre TV.

Yes, I'd be interested in your thoughts - I appreciate they'd be speculation but it might put in some context for me.

I'd also be interested in what, as an avid fan, didn't work. I wasn't particularly impressed by Karen Page's character - but that maybe because I'm not keen on the actress.

And perhaps because I really dug the black ninja style suit , when we finally get to see the red suit, it was a bit of an anti-climax, almost laughable. But I quickly got over that when he finished posing and got into fighting...

**SPOILERS**

Some random things. Melvin Potter who made DD's costume is an on again off again villain known as the Gladiator.

Matt's Greek girlfriend in college is Elektra.

The people Stick and his boss are fighting against are a group of ninja assassins known as the Hand. That is if they stick loosely with what went on in the comics. Nobu's ninja outfit is similar to that worn by the Hand.

Karen Page does indeed go down a very dark path. Drugs etc.

Crusher Creel, the guy Battlin Jack Murdock beats will becomes a Thor villain known as the Absorbing Man. In the comics anyway.

Gao's heroin is stamped by an insignia of the Steel Serpent, an enemy of Iron Fist.

Whew that's all off the top of my head.

So DD is very firmly set within the Marvel Universe then?

Thanks for all that info GC - it adds to my amazement at the quality of this production that all this was packed in there, but to an outsider none of it jarred (except the Black Sky/ mystery man thing I mentioned earlier.)

And great news - Season 2 has been confirmed!

So shall we start speculating? ** SPOILERS**

Is Fisk going to run his kingdom from jail - with Vanessa acting as his 'front man'? Or will she become much more of a driving force shaping his organisation?

With Fisk away, will a new baddie come to the fore?

Will Karen Page take the darker path alluded to in the blogs I've been reading?

There's so many questions!
