Original Liberator prop/model for sale?
exterminator
Yes, it's rather peculiar that two "newbie" bidders (one with a feedback of 9, the other with zero!) are bidding such huge amounts. I can think of only two reasons - it's either the seller (or a friend of the seller) placing "shill" bids to bump the price up, or its over - enthusiastic "newbie" bidders who just HAVE to be the top bidder. Let's hope whoever wins can afford to buy it ...

Basically, you can report the item to Ebay or even phone them!
But I don't know enough about this model...but I do think its the same chap who told me, last time this model was on, when I asked if I could go and have a look at it, to go online and see martin's webpage. I think he is using different accounts. It may even be the same chap who sold that Mini Orac. (STrange how they all live in Southampton!) With Mini Orac, because I had asked for photos of the actual model and not of the one taken at Smallspace, he thought it was me who had won it and kept sending me Emails asking me to pay him with Paypal personal payment (thereby sidestepping fees). When I informed him it wasn't me, he got very angry, calling me a timewaster...and all because I wanted to see actual photos! Not a nice chap, at all.
Still, if it is him and his friends trying to upbid a genuine fan, then someone has to pay Ebay fees...and so far that could be in the hundreds, pound wise!!
And £75 postage!!! Just how is he going to send it?????
This is really strange...I've just checked his feedback.....it was he who sold the last Libby for £10,000 last year!!!

Facetious thought! Could the bidder be elderly Avon, desperate to get his hands on any Liberator? Or does this model contain the hidden, fabled, treasure room and is therefore worth the investment?

At this point I wouldn't rule out anything...

That would make an excellent piece of fiction, in fact it would be a tale to rival the auctions provenance! Grin

Or you could build a Liberator out of empty Talisker bottles...

There is of course a cheaper method. In my primary school days I used to build Enterprise models made of a cardboard disc and three empty ink cartridges for fountain pens. As the Liberator is also mainly compsed of tubular shapes, it is possible to use the same approach for a Libby model: just four ink cartridges and a green bead (plus white paint). Much cheaper than one bottle of whisky, let alone 9000 pound!

"my mate whoi sold it too. says if it dont reach 25000 it will be unsold listing will be ended sorry guys"

You now have a price!

That is a heck of a lot of whiskey bottles! Grin

I wish I spoke the language, but this is the latest oddity on the Facebook group - quoted verbatim:

Chris Tarrant: "this my mate wayne middleton had it made from martin bowers . he wants 2500 i know martin charges 5000 for two foot replica. tjhis guy andy hasnt a clue about the original liberator. as said i went go court and matt declined as martin bowers evidance too high and if u like matt your back his model alot matt followers dont like the truth"

Chris Tarrant: "i also had space models feltham guy take look ot my original liberator they agreed one pylon was wood other two fibreglass as the original prop i had was....... matts all carbon copy original ball"

Chris Tarrant: "but now i have a three foot replica of it now. so i have a replica and i can get any blakes 7 fan a three foot liberator replica for 6000"

If it's only worth 6000 then why demand 25,000? It can't be Bowers's "original".

Amazing how the story keeps changing.

Perhaps someone familiar with Ebay procedures could call out the dogs on this guy. He is giving our fandom a bit of a bad reputation!

I've seen on Facebook that it's been reported to eBay, but nothing has happened. I suspect that eBay is thinking more of how much in fees this is going to generate for it.

The thing is, he's already sold it once, last year, for £10,000 (and the buyer was very pleased), so what is he doing? Having these models made and conning people into paying through the nose for something they believe has actually been in the show?
I emailed him last year about the model he was selling then and he became most aggressive.

Either that or the 'buyer' was another of his accounts. He could be selling it to himself multiple times to bump up his rating to make it easier to fool someone that what he is selling is the genuine article because he has some great feedback.
"Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics, and you'll get ten different answers, but there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe, and Lao-Tzu, and Einstein, and Morobuto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes…then all of this…all of this…was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars." Commander sinclair, Babylon 5.

What Coser said. I suspect the same.

Even assuming that this is still Martin Bower's model, it was never used in the show in its current form and selling it as such is false advertising. I'm still cross about the 'misaligned pod' - is he implying it was damaged during filming? I quite suspect he damaged it himself, because it was immaculate when we had custody of it. And how much damage is this bungy cord now doing to the paintwork it's wrapped around? I wish I could rescue the poor model from its current owner, but we don't have £10k lying around - and even if we did, I wouldn't want to give it to *him*.

But as someone pointed out to me, suggesting something like this would be verging on libel if it turns out it is genuine...

It would indeed be libellous. However, the claim on eBay that Martin Bower was the designer is false, and the claim that the model was used in the series is contentious to say the least.
