Rewatch Oz - Dr Who Planet of Giants

This seems a bad plan... causing an explosion while they're an inch tall. Amazing they don't kill themselves!

What Louis Marks does do quite well is the speculative ideas about how the Tardis works.
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

No it suggest time is working at a different speed for the two sets of characters, and there's not hint of that. Surely they'd simply be inaudible to the "Giants"

That's what I was thinking too.

Never mind flying metal, the release of the gas from the can might have killed our miniature heroes!

Well, the set design team and cast attacked it with gusto, but the script wasn't the greatest.

Not a bad story, an OK and slightly dull one.

I'll upgrade it from 4/10 to 5/10.

Despite being s2 on paper, the writing and story style is still very much s1 imo. There's quite a change from The Rescue onwards.

This was a 7/10 for me; lots to recommend it, but ultimately less than the sum of its parts.

What stands out most for me is the performance of Jacqueline Hill; oftentimes the people who populate fantasy drama seem to know that they're either only in one story, so walk resignedly to their deaths, or that they're a regular and only have press on to be alright at the end. Nu-Who has successfully challenged this to an extent, only to undermine it again with endless resurrections. But here Hill plays Barbara as a person trapped with a clock ticking that her friends don't share, and who genuinely believes that she is about to die which is a very dark and adult direction for a show that some claim never went down such roads. Babs doesn't much care about the adventure or the wider issues. All that matters is that the man she loves is going to loose her and she wants to protect him from knowing until it happens. Okay, a lot of it's improvised by the cast. But all great drama is the result of teamwork and the contributions of both cast and crew. Just that one running sub-plot is quite Blake's 7 or Nu-Who like in its realisation and human intensity. Top marks for it, let down in the bigger picture by the shallow and understated main element in the full size world.
