Rewatch - D5 Animals
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Five - Animals
The date: Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Emperor Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) declares that he will first play with and then destroy the Earth using natural disasters. On Earth, Og (David Boyce) boards a small plane, where he meets travel journalist Dale Arden (Melody Anderson). Mid-flight, the cockpit is hit by a meteorite and the pilots are lost. Og takes control and manages to crash land into a greenhouse owned by Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol). Zarkov, who believes the disasters are being caused because an unknown source is pushing the Moon towards Earth, has secretly constructed a spacecraft which he plans to use to investigate. Zarkov's assistant refuses to go, so he lures Og and Dale aboard. The rocket launches, taking them to the planet Mongo, where they are captured by Ming's troops.

The three are brought before Ming. He orders Dale be prepared for his pleasure. Og tries to resist, but is overpowered. Ming orders Zarkov be reprogrammed and Og executed. Ming's daughter, Princess Aura (Ornella Muti), seduces Ming’s surgeon into saving Og, to whom she is attracted. As they escape, Og sees Zarkov being brainwashed by Klytus, the metal-faced head of the secret police. Aura and Og flee to Arboria, kingdom of Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton), Aura's lover. En route, Aura teaches Og to use a telepathic communicator to contact Dale. He lets her know he is alive. Dale is locked in Ming's bedchamber, but encouraged by Og, she escapes. Klytus sends Zarkov to intercept Dale, who tells him and Klytus that Og is alive. They then escape, as Zarkov reveals he resisted the brainwashing. They are captured by Prince Vultan's (Brian Blessed) Hawkmen and taken to Sky City.

Aura and Og arrive at Arboria. Aura asks the Prince to keep Og safe. A distrustful Barin, in love with Aura, agrees not to kill Og, but then forces him to perform a deadly ritual. Barin and Og take turns sticking their hands into a hollow stump with a giant scorpion-like Wood Beast inside. When Og has to take an extra turn, he pretends to be stung as a distraction and escapes. Barin follows, but they are both captured by the Hawkmen.

Klytus informs Ming that Og is alive and is given authority to find out who is responsible. Aura returns and is taken prisoner and tortured by Klytus and General Kala (Mariangela Melato). They force her to confess and Ming banishes her to the ice moon Frigia after his wedding. Meanwhile, Og and Barin are taken to Sky City, where Og and Dale are briefly reunited. Og is forced to fight Barin to the death, but Barin joins him when Og saves his life. Klytus arrives and Og and Barin kill him. Knowing that this will bring retribution, Vultan orders the Hawkmen to evacuate, leaving Barin, Og, Dale and Zarkov behind. Ming’s ship arrives and he orders Barin, Zarkov and Dale to be taken aboard. Ming is impressed with Og, and offers him lordship over Earth in exchange for loyalty, which Og refuses. Ming gives the order to destroy Vultan’s kingdom along with Og. Og finds a rocket cycle and escapes before Sky City is destroyed.

Og contacts Vultan, who is hiding on Arboria and they plot an attack on Mingo City. Og pretends to attack Mingo City alone on his rocket cycle. General Kala dispatches the war rocket Ajax to kill Og, but the Hawkmen ambush and seize the rocket. Meanwhile, Princess Aura overpowers her guard and frees Barin and Zarkov from the execution chamber. Og and the Hawkmen attack Mingo City in Ajax and Kala activates the defenses, as Ming and Dale’s wedding begins. Mingo City's lightning field can only be penetrated by flying Ajax into it at a suicidal speed. Og volunteers to stay at the helm to ensure success and allow the Hawkmen to invade the city.

Barin and Zarkov enter the control room to stop the lightning field, encountering Kala who refuses to deactivate it. She attempts to kill Zarkov, but Barin shoots and kills her. Without Kala they are unable to deactivate the field from that control room. Barin tells Zarkov to hold the fort while he heads to Sector Alpha. Zarkov keeps trying, but is unable to deactivate the shield.

Barin fights through Ming's guards and gets to Sector Alpha and deactivates the lightning field before Ajax hits it. Og flies the rocket ship into the city's wedding hall and the ship's bow impales Ming. He falls off the rocket nose, seriously wounded and Og offers to spare his life if he will stop the attack on Earth, but Ming refuses. Ming attempts to use his power ring on Og, but his power falters and nothing happens. He then aims the ring at himself and is seemingly vaporized by its remaining power seconds before the counter to the destruction of the Earth reaches zero. A huge victory celebration ensues.

Barin and Aura become the new leaders in Ming's place. Barin names Vultan the leader of their armies. Og, Dale and Zarkov discuss returning to Earth. Zarkov says he doesn't know how they will get back, but they will try. Barin tells them all they're welcome to stay, but Dale says she's a New York City girl, and it's now too quiet around Mongo.

The final frame shows Ming's ring being picked up by the hand of an unseen person. Ming's laugh echoes as the credits roll. Following the credits the text "The End" is shown on the screen before a question mark (?) is appended.

Three good reasons to love Animals:

1. Gorgeous close-ups of Dayna in the first minutes.
2. Og.
3. Justin dies.

Three not so good reasons to love Animals:

1. No subplot to give the Scorpio crew something to do
2. Avon slides in Og poo
3. Vila is now on teleport duty, just like Jenna and Cally

Sweevo, hey that’s one of the plusses to the episode – I always chuckle when Avon almost slips over on the Og poo!! Grin

It’s also got a deeper meaning. At the end of “Stardrive”, Avon responds with a cold “Who?” to the question of “What about Dr Plaxton?” shortly after condemning her to death, to save the lives of all on-board Scorpio. No explanation of why it is necessary; no hint of slight regret. It’s a cold and slightly inhuman response.

But Avon almost falling over after sliding on the Og poo demonstrates he is still a human being, with all the frailties entailed. As much as Avon tries to cut himself off, he is still flesh and blood.

In many ways, Avon slipping on the Og poo is a major pointer to the end of episode 52: that a mishap is always just around the corner. It’s excellent foreshadowing. I can imagine the conversation: PAUL: “Do I really have to nearly slip up on the Og Poo?” VERE: “Dear boy, it’s the most important moment of the season!”

Arguably, Avon slipping on the Og poo is a pivotal point in B7 history, along with the death of Gan, the destruction of the Liberator, and Avon shooting Blake.

Just a reminder to everyone to remember their Og horns for the rewatch.

I think there are various online tips on how to create a pair of horns. Alternatively two croissants taped to the side of the head also work, and double for a tasty snack at the end of the rewatch. Grin

When the shop had run out of croissants and I had to use hot cross buns, it didn't work so well.

Ah, those will have to be saved for any future Return Of The Jedi rewatch, when everyone will be requested to rewatch wearing pain au raisin and a steel bikini Shock Pfft

I’ve found the following.

Seems a bit complicated to me – I think I’ll stick to the croissants!

How to make horns for Cosplay

Horns are a pain in the butt. You have only a few good options when you need them for your cosplay. You can buy real horns…. but that’s pricey, or you can make your own but that can be messy….. or is it!!

Quick background on this project. I needed a set of 4 horns for a shield. These needed to be over 12 inches long and pretty thin. I got lucky on this and had a form I could use, but these could easily be done free hand as well.

Materials: Expanding foam and wire mesh, that is all you will need.

Total cost $9.00 on the mesh (enough for 2 big horns)
$4.99 on the foam (still haven’t used it all up)

Cost per horn…. about $4.00 dollars for me. Price will vary a bit but this is much much cheeper then other methods and the end product is strong and able to take some abuse.

How to do it:
Start with a general idea of how you want this horn to look
Is it wide at the bottom?
Long and Narrow?
Short and thin?

I used a form from another horn I had

I split the mesh in half lengthwise and used it to wrap the horn.

Once its wrapped and you’re happy with the over all look, I recommend a few dobs of hotglue to help it hold its shape. The mesh is very bendable but it will always have a bit of spring to it.

Horn copy is almost done,
You should be asking your self “Where is the spray foam” or at least wondering why you purchased it at this point. This wire form is a great way get the look of a horn but is not very tough. I have seen many tutorials out there where people start to cover the horn at this point with paper mache or even fiberglass.

Time to fill the form with the spray foam, I left the end open so I could get the nozzle of the spray foam down in to it to help fill the horn. There are also a few small holes cut in the mesh just to make sure I can get the whole thing filled.

I have also mounted them on a wooden dowel because that’s how my costume needs them!

I failed to take any good pictures of the process of filling them with foam, but its not really something you should need help with. Put the can together, stick the straw in to the horn, and fill full of foam. If some squirts out of the mesh that’s fine. You can wipe it off once you’re done filling it full.

Here are all 4 of the horns I did drying. The foam will take 8 hours to cure to full strength and will expand through the mesh and look a bit like an alien egg…. or something..

Next day and the foam is dry. Using a sharp knife, cut away the extra foam and don’t worry about being very gentle, the mesh will keep you from cutting too deep and ruining your hard work.

Total weight of the 4 horns and dowel is under 2 pounds.

Prep your horn with a good sanding of 80-120 grit sand paper and finish with your method of choosing. Paper mache will work very well to help keep it light.

Hope this helps and best of luck with all your cosplay work!
