Horizon Advent Calendar 2014
Joe Dredd
Hi everyone,

This is the thread for posting the calendar entries in. Each volunteer will post their entry on their assigned day, whenever convenient. (If anyone has any problems, please contact any of the moderators.)

Please post any comments on the Advent Calendar comments thread (Here).

My thanks to all the volunteers. We all hope you enjoy our contributions. Please keep in mind that we don't know what each other will post, and every entry is a surprise. If two people happen to have similar ideas then that is just a cause for extra celebration as "Great minds think alike" and it's great to have people with great minds in our club. No one should fret if someone else posts your idea first - that wouldn't be fun at all. Don't worry about it and just post your entry.

Lastly, don't forget that the 24th is a designated "free-for-all" day so if ANYONE gets inspired and wants to join in, please do - that's what the 24th is for!

Regards to all,

Joe.

1st December! Let's open the door for day one and see what's behind it!

A Not-at-all-Christmassy Christmas Puzzle

Following a raid by Blake and his crew on the main communication base in sector ten, Servalan arrives on Arkentootle Minor to inspect the damage. She is outraged to find that Vila has, rather artistically, spray-painted the names of the Liberator crew on one of the walls.

After a while she senses there is something unusual about the graffiti. But what?

i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x418/Dash_Decent/GrafittiFINAL_zps30f1d7d7.jpg

"I recommend clicking on the picture to make it bigger," advises Orac.
"Maybe if you take the second last letter of every word?" suggests Vila.
"This one is so easy you could do it standing on your head," Avon replies.

5th December, unfortunately I don't have 5 million credits to share. However, hopefully this will add to the holiday cheer.
I adore Christmas, baking cookies, wrapping packages, singing carols (though I can't carry a tune in a bucket), but I especially enjoy decorating my Christmas tree. I've had a tree every year since I have had a place of my own to put it, including the dorm room that was about the size of a walk-in closet. The decorations are eclectic, the balls that my parents had on their first tree, hand made creations, gifts and trip souvenirs. Last year I was sighing that I wanted a Libby to put on the tree. I have a pair of Enterprises (the original and the D), but Hallmark doesn't sell Libbys. However, a couple of weeks ago I was poking around on AO3 and found this:

Instructions

Beaded Liberator

Beaded Liberator in clear bauble

It is directions on how to make a model Libby out of beads and wire and the completed model looks to be about the right size for my little tree. I had intended to have one made and be able to vouch that the directions work, but I am having trouble finding all the bits that I need. Hope this is useful to others who want to add some B7 to their holiday decorations. And surely all of us mad sads need a Libby on the tree Grin

7th December. OK my Yule-tide contribution is to try and get the Humorous thread started again. It’s so much fun and since this is the time of the year to be happy I thought I’d go for it.

Therefore, I have added 52 pictures on the Humorous thread. Yep 52, one from each episode!

http://www.blakes7online.com/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=43&pid=30824#post_30824

Of course the pictures need captions to be funny, so I am putting the challenge out there…..I challenge us to come up with at least one caption for each photo before the end of December (caption doesn’t have to be Christmas themed). So get those humorous thinking caps on……

To get us started I have a bonus picture – it’s a variation on a picture and caption I submitted a couple of years ago. Enjoy!

i989.photobucket.com/albums/af14/Louise400/Bonus-1.png
JENNA: Blake, I don’t care how much you think it will unite the people – we are NOT getting up in front of 30,000 people at the Carols in the Park to sing “Little Donkey”.

Guess the Carol

The following screengrabs illustrate a well-known Xmas song, but can you figure out which one?
(Some of the pictures are literal illustrations of the words, some are figurative and a couple are just bad puns!)

I may be a bit busy tomorrow morning, so I'll open windo no. 11 now, if that's OK.

In the days of the second calendar, some traditions remain, and at this time of year, our friends on the Liberator relive those traditions. This is the story of their celebrations as seen by Avon, in the style of an old classic Christmas poem...

The Night Before Christmas.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the ship
Not a system was stirring, not even a blip.
The stockings were hung by the consoles with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The crewmates were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of moon-disks danced in their heads.
And Vila in his fatigues, and Gan in his cap,
Had just settled their heads for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the decks there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the flight deck I flew like a flash,
Slid open the hatchway and threw up the sash.

The stars on the steel of the flight deck below,
Gave the lustre of mid-day to people we know.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a space-going sled, and eight glowing reindeer.

On Zen's main veiwscreen, so lively and quick,
I wondered anon, could this be Saint Nick?
More rapid than pursuit ships his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the ship! to the top of the hull!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As fugitives away from the federation fly,
When they meet with a pursuit ship, blast off to the sky.
So over the Liberator the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of presents, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the ground
The humming and thrumming of the teleporter sound.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
On the flight deck a stranger came in with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of presents he had on his back,
And he looked like a smuggler, just opening his pack.

His eyes were familiar, his face was so merry!
His hair dark and curly, his suit like a cherry!
He had a friend with him, that I also know,
With hair brightest blonde and skin pale as snow.

The two of them looked like they had a plan,
And they giggled together as I know they can.
Off to the quarters they went with their sacks,
That shook as they giggled, and danced on their backs !

To each crewmate's room they went with great joy,
And I laughed when I saw them, in spite of their ploy!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know Blake was soft in the head.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a grin.
And smiling to Jenna, his accomplice and friend,
They went to the flight deck to give orders to Zen!

He said to the computer, Zen, now it is done,
And the images of Santa went blank one by one.
But I heard him say to me, as the crew woke with fright,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Merry Christmas Horizon!

Well, here we are at the halfway point and the calendar is going very well! I think that to celebrate I'm going to tip out some of my emergency spares. First, a cartoon (and, as always, clicking on it should let you see a larger version):

i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x418/Dash_Decent/Lobster_FINAL_zpsfdb7b13a.jpg

And now while we wait for the next door to be opened on our fannish festive, er, falendar, a musical interlude:

Next week, London Calling, featuring Mr Artix on vocals.

Joe Dredd
Oh dear, children! That wasn't very Christmassy, now was it? And so very loud! Let's see if we can lift our spirits by opening the twelfth door and see what is behind it... George, don't do that... Oh look, it's a lovely story! No Timothy, not a beastly story, a lovely story. I hope. Shall I read it to you? Alright, I shall.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.

How the Bouch stopped Christmas (accidentally)
by Clinician Seuss.

(with apologies to TS and CB.)

The writer was stuck, he hadn't a clue
And the Lorrimax was waiting and Mary was too.
He needed a muse; he needed a reason
What sort of surprise could finish the season?

He cudgeled his brain and pondered and mused
but after an hour he was still stuck on page two.
He hadn't a plot. Not a dot nor a jot,
no plot had he got.
i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x418/Dash_Decent/Plot_zps58722a20.jpg

The Bouch was stuck. How should it end?
Should everyone meet up and nicely make friends?
How about a rollicking tale introducing Bayb's mother?
Or should he write in Travis's missing kid brother?

i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x418/Dash_Decent/Killer_zps34ab9cc2.jpg

He needed to write it, to earn his supper
Then it struck him at once - he'd use the Plot Fixer-Upper!
The ideas it produced were always exciting
but he'd worn it right out when Terry was writing.

He raced to the attic and pulled off the sheet
and found his invention lurking beneath.
It was oily and rusted and only wrote in vernacular
but he knew that it's output was never less than spectacular.

He put in some paper and gave it a crank
And cooed sweet words as he patted it's flank.
The Plot Fixer-Upper shuddered and shook
For five long hours, for five long hours it took!

Then all at once it rattled and sighed
a paper popped out then the great machine died.
The Bouch snatched it up, eager for plot
and first saw the words:
i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x418/Dash_Decent/Blakegetsshot2_zps9ce9174c.jpg

The Bouch callooed and danced 'round the room,
those three little words had brightened his gloom.
He settled at the typewriter and wondered with vigour
Which of the baddies should he assign to the trigger?

Then into his mind burst a man moody and mean
He was the Blint and he said he was keen
To get that rat Blake who promised his ship
But threw in the crew. He didn't want them! Not one little bit!

He'd saved up some books (for he was a reader)
but when he turned round they'd made him the leader!
He tried to throw stones but only found one
A rather strange thing called the Sopron.

The Blint decided to take a pro-active tack
He'd find that rat Blake and give his crew back!
So he raced the ship 'round all outer space
To Epheron and Obsidian and all over the place.

Then the ship caught the flu, and suffered and died
and still he was stuck with the crew by his side!
Oh, Irony of ironies! What he most wanted he'd lost,
and keeping those he wanted least was seemingly the cost.

But that wasn't the thing that burned most in his vitals
No, it was that Blake, long gone, was still named in the titles!
"BLINT'S 7" should now be the name of the show
He knew that man Blake needed to go.

The Bouch chewed his pen, and glugged at his tea
and wrote through the night until quarter past three.
Then finishing the last page, he slipped it onto the pile
and leaned back in his chair and started to smile.

To no one's surprise, he'd produced a real classic
Just like all the others (his were always fantastic).
"The crew will all look like they're no longer alive,
but I'll fix it all up when we do series five!

"With a cliff hanger this good, they're bound to renew
The Beeb'll give us another series; maybe even a few!"
Then with visions of BAFTAs a-dance in his head
The Bouch put himself deservedly to bed.

THE END
(as it proved to be!)

A tad early, but the wide screen monitor at work makes all the cutting and pasting much easier.

'Twas the night before Fedmas, when all through the house
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/residence1_zpsa8b7e2a7.jpg

Not a creature was stirring, not even a cloned mouse;
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/mouse_zpsf09c1c90.jpg

The sensors were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Rebel Father Christmas soon would be there;
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/stnickk_zps86d39034.jpg

The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While electronic and drug induced visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/sugarplums_zps40182bc5.jpg

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Were waiting to have our internals kidnapped,
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/nap_zps77f55357.jpg

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/window_zps3b9fac26.jpg

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/snow_zpsa0b96690.jpg

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/reindeer_zpsed5610ed.jpg

With a little old pilot so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/nbc/stnickk_zps86d39034.jpg

More rapid than Space Rats his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/1_zps28b08a03.jpg

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/2_zps8715a21d.jpg

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/bount056_zpsc6b94c9a.jpg

As I hit the alarm, and was turning around,
Down the chimney the fugitives came with a bound.
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/term113_zpsca365b63.jpg

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/anima115_zpsa3bb5581.jpg

A cooler of soma he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/time117_zps92b70e08.jpg

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Disabled the scanners; then turned with a jerk,
i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/BradPaula/seek008_zpsf257a2ce.jpg

They teleported, to the Feds gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard them exclaim, ere they warped out of sight—
“Huggy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Well, after much thought and asking Daughter No. 2 nicely, I decided to post this as my contribution to the Advent Calendar......I thought I best put this up this evening just in case my computer and internet connection decided not to play ball on the 15th!!!

There was a ‘young’ (?) lady from Locks Heath
Who gave her 2 daughters much grief
‘I have no memento,
Of me and ‘im in a photo’
So Sarah did this…what a relief!!

Taken at the event in the London Cinema Museum when, after much cajoling from Daughter no. 2, I finally got the courage to ask Mr D. if I could have a photo with him...It had only taken me THIRTY years!!!!!!!
And Sarah then did her magic...........Grin

For me it is already
16 December:

I have always wanted to create a Blake's 7 fanvid and I thought now would be the perfect time!

As usual our heroes have to save the day...and more...
And did you know that Zen has an extraordinary skill?

The adventure is called Adventitious

Enjoy!
