Yeah, I'm not claiming it was identical for 17 years, simply that it was the same arrangement, a testament to the work of Delia Derbyshire. Other people added bits over the top (from the start of Pertwee onwards), but it was still her version, underneath it all.

Of the original themes, I think I also prefer the spooky Hartnell & Troughton version.

They are different Hartnell and Troughton's, listen to the start.

Harry Mole is supposed to be a Doctor Who fan right?

Whizzkid is obviously supposed to be a DW fan. It's a bit brave saying "It's always not as good as it used to be" Grin

Yes, I love the (often denied) in-jokes in this! You have the fan, the casual viewers who are not really watching properly, and the 'gods' in their real form who are the BBC themselves Grin
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

And of course, its about the Doctor and Ace performing in front of those analogies of different viewers and trying to survive to have more adventures which itself is an analogy of the show itself trying to keep those characters 'in the ring' Grin

An the title The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is itself a series in-joke Grin

Cheers GC, you're right:

Derbyshire created two arrangements in 1963: the first was rejected by the producers, but was released as a single. The second arrangement, a slightly modified version of the first, was used on the first episode of the programme. The two 1963 arrangements served, with only minor edits and additions requested by the producers, as the theme tune up to 1980 and the end of Season 17. The most notable of these edits were addition of 'electronic spangles', and tape echo, from the Patrick Troughton serial The Faceless Ones (although it was originally made for The Macra Terror, a production error led to the previous arrangement still being used) onwards, and the addition of a "sting" at the start of the closing credits during Jon Pertwee's first season.

But the above also confirms that it is Derbyshire's arrangement was used up until 1980, which was my original point.

Personally, I reckon they should return to it. Yes they can add to it, if they wish, but I still think the 1963-1980 arrangement (including amended versions) had a spookiness to them lacking in subsequent arrangements (Peter Howell came closest to re-creating it),

They did well with Jessica Martin's make-up imo; its alien but not over the top.

Not true in 1988, I liked Red Dwarf more by then Wink

Between 1982 & 1985 (after the demise of B7), then yes I would have given DW that title. Pfft

The more subtle make-up used on Jessica Martin when she's normal means the werewolf transformation is more effective...

Of course these days, as in Tooth & Claw, they would use CGI rather than make up only...
