Moloch

Or

Three Women and a Muppet

"Give her to the men"

"Thats disgusting"

"Haha his name is Gross"

"Servalan just mowed them all down"

"Looks like a crap Muppet"

"You gotta be some kinda stupid to kill yourself like that"

"There are only like three natives in this episode"

"Four, remember Moloch?"

"Shut up! Where are the rest of the people.... wait don't answer that"

Michelle enjoyed this one, but not anywhere near as much as Steed's previous story. I'd say she likes it about the same as Ultraworld. She was not impressed with the implication that behind "Give her to your men" and nor did she think it was clever for the Liberator crew to follow Servalan for 27 days. Shoot her!

Doran was funny, but a little creepy. The gun "going off" in his hand was hilarious.

Tarrant gets away with it in this episode.... Michelle's just plain likes him too much. She just tells me to shut up whenever I tease her about it.

Moloch looked like a sinister Muppet according to Michelle and kinda crap. She thinks people are just as dumb in two million years as they are now.

The planet is supposed to have 300 natives right? Michelle wanted to know why we barely saw any of them. Just three ladies and a Muppet.

You guys might be able to help me out, does this episode predate Empire Strikes Back? It'd be cool if B7 had the first Bacta tank like device in sci/fi.

Hi Luke and Michelle
I just wanted to say I've really enjoyed all your comments on the episodes so far. Especially as Michelle's seem to echo quite a few said at my house over recent re-screenings. My Beloved never watched B7 before though he does say he must have seen one episode and decided that Blake was such a pill that he gave up there and then. But there has actually been a lot of amusement and enjoyment now that he's been forced to watch it. Anyway, keep up the great work! I'll be thinking of you when I next gear up the Blueray. Just looked it up, and empire was released in the UK in May 1980, Moloch was shown in March 1980, so it does predate the film!

BTW, nice to see you both!

Therenis something very bizarre about the misogyny in these characters in 'Moloch'. Like when Vila's 'new pal', up til now an almost likeable comedy berk, suddenly states that he doesn't like women, with a very fierce expression on his face..!

Amd your sis is spot-on re: the Muppet Moloch!!! haha

The Way Back

Well, I had seen this episode not that long ago so neglected it as part of my watch it marathon but I had to include it somehow. It's also one of the oddest episodes for a number of reasons, almost taking place in an alternate universe. It's not like any other episode but it sets things up fairly well.

For one, it's almost entirely Earth bound. The sets are fairly cheap and remind me of an American show called INSIGHT, a sort of Sunday morning religious Twilight Zone series. There's little music to speak of and the filming is adequate if unremarkable. The acting is strong. Does anyone else want to smash Morag? What a change from Servalan or rather what change she will be to this character. All the villains are so smug and highly motivated in their murderous plots that they all make me want to punch them.

Things to note as compared to DW: there is a more serious manner here; a more adult manner, too, as we have people kiss and in bed and talk of child...uhm, deviation and injury. There's VERY little humor and that's only in the form of Vila. Otherwise, things are very grim and nasty with a pessimistic tone throughout...which almost never abates throughout the rest of the series. There's a lot of other stuff here but greatly put together: 1984, BRAVE NEW WORLD, FARHENHEIT 451, LOGAN'S RUN (domes, unfair rules), TEH STARLOST (cheap sets, gov't not telling you everything), and THE PRISONER (cameras watching you, false reports, spies, drugs, brainwashing). Of course the entire show will be a sort of anti STAR TREK and a pro STAR WARS (rebels) but both of those are less a source than the other things mentioned above.

Gareth makes a good hero and victim and he's lacking what would later be Blake's manipulation mode. Here, he's sympathetic and pathetic. It's hard not to feel sorry for him: he's been brainwashed and memory wiped, and here, he remembers that but cannot do anything about it, he's not sure the people working for his defense (all two of them) will be able to do anything or if they are part of it (does he EVER learn they were two good people and were killed?), he learns his brother and sister were killed, he sees (or rather hears and later sees them dead) his former friend (or was it friends?) and (whom he does not remember) killed, and he's again put on trial unfairly. Why didn't they just brainwash him again? Wipe his memory again? Would it not work again?

Blake meets Jenna and Vila in the cell (a very unkind place as one screaming woman..was she being led away from someone who was in a cell or being taken to one???). Vila is the only funny thing. The spy, Dev Tarrant has the name Tarrant. Related to Del? Probably not. Nation tends to give that name to plenty of people in his stories.

This episode is not bad at all, in fact, it's very good, strong and solid and a good base for the series and background for Blake. I guess more publicity was used to get people interested in Doctor Who and other space shows and movies to come back because there's no hint of what was to come here and while this was a very good episode, I'm not sure the public would have come back unless they learned more...BUT again Gareth is very good in this and I would have come back to just find out what happened to him. Maybe they were using that gamble. Other than Blake and Gareth there's very little to return for...everyone else good dies!

A mention about the deaths: they're quite shocking and disturbing, especially for that time in television. Bodies are shown. Men and women, old and young are shot, blood is shown. Nice people (such as the American ? Foster) who seem like they might be regulars...die while surrendering peacefully...and the show presents as more than cold hearted and dangerous. of course, now, every TV show including the basis for it, LAW AND ORDER and a very short time later THE X FILES and MILLENNIUM, made such danger, violence, and criminal cold behavior and outlooks a common thing on tv, use such ideas but seeing how cold the Blake universe was...was disturbing (almost as disturbing as THE OMEGA FACTOR).

At the end of this I must mention the three Blake's 7 annuals. One of them gives a description of other worlds that expands on the entire universe of Blake's 7.

SPACE FALL
This second episode is quite good. Lots of familiar faces from Doctor Who and Sapphire and Steel (Tom Kelly) and even the Legend of King Arthur. In any case, after the PRISONER like trial and torture and brainwashing of Blake in the first episode, this one is more straight forward and adventure-ish. It all takes places on the space shuttle London taking the prisoners toward Cygnus Alpha prison planet.

The thing about this early in Blake's is that there is no Liberator until this episode's second half and then it's only glimpsed and a defense mechanism is seen. Here we meet Avon and it's a thrill right from start. He and Vila spar a slight bit but it is really Blake's episode. Gareth makes it his own and makes his long moral speeches sound enthralling. Sally makes Jenna likable and solid, tough and warm, all in one go. Keating makes Vila so very good right from the beginning and Gan is given a lot to do. Pity everyone forget about Tom Kelly's brave youth, Nova. He gets killed by being solidified in the outer shunt hallway and no one even mentions him again! Of course it looks like he's been given a bubble bath death but...the idea is there and it's horrible. His death sticks out in one's mind.

Which brings me to the thing about Blake's effects...they are often mocked and sometimes rightfully so. For one thing, this show is NOT about effects, nor do they need them. It's about the relationships between the characters, the plots, the quips, humor and action and the cold hearted reality of a cold universe/planet/Federation. That said, other than the bubble bath, almost all of the other effects, model work is passable and does the job, other than the cartoon that ends the episode. Yes, the Liberator is animated. It's okay, too. It gets the job done.

After all the evil manipulators of the first episode, we expect everyone in the Federation employ to be evil villains, madmen. Surely Raiker fits the bill and he meets a fitting end after killing unarmed men to get Blake, Avon, and Jenna to give up the computer room. Good fight between Avon and the computer man by the way. However, the old man captain of the flight is not evil, just doing his job and he seems by the book and not murderous at all. Ditto flight navigator Artix who has a future planned for himself, wanting to better himself. They seem like real people, of the type one almost never gets in Doctor Who. The other guards seem real, too. One other does kill unarmed men but he seems to want to do that because the prisoners hurt his comrades. I must say leaving one man in charge of so many prisoners...is dumb and the camera doesn't cover the one access panel and even if it does, no one notices or monitors it when Blake and Avon all go through it several different times or Nova that one time...where he dies.

I like the mystery of the alien ship and the whole access tube, even if it looks like a tent. The idea that Raiker wants Jenna for other things is horribe...and I'd love to know what she said in his ear that made him slap her. The escape plot takes its time but it's never boring...at least to me and meeting Avon and finding out more about Jenna and Vila adds up to one very good episode. And gosh, it cannot be more different to Doctor Who if wanted to be. Well done, well acted, well written IMO.
