+++THIS WEEK'S POLL+++

Do you like to see new Dalek stories, or is it a case of "oh no, not the Daleks again" for you?

Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

I am cautiously optimistic. The new show hasn't had a classic Dalek story yet, but I always look forward to seeing them.

Whenever a Dalek story appears...so does Mr Nation's name in the (very) quick credits!
So it can't be all that bad!!
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

I voted 'other'.

I've always loved the Daleks. They terrified me as a child (in a good way, from behind a large sofa cushion) and I think they're one of the best SF monsters ever created. And probably thanks to this early childhood imprinting, the Daleks for me have always been as much a part of Doctor Who as his Tardis.

BUT
You can have too much of a good thing, and now I think they're suffering from diminishing returns. I would be happier if their appearances were less frequent. Do we really need a Dalek story every season? Old Who sometimes went for years with nary a Dalek in sight, which made their reappearances all the more exciting.

I read so many "Dalek" from the Nineīs Doctor series comparisons, that it canīt be a bad thing Smile

I read that BBC has to keep using Daleks each season or they will lose the rights for using them. Not sure if it is true but a *proper* Dalek story - with Daleks or a Dalek in the center - was not really seen for a while, they usually just stand in the background.

Other: It is my uniformed understanding that the BBC contract with TN's estate to use the Daleks requires one Dalek story per season....

So far so good, as long as we can keep the stories fresh, and not simply revisit the past. That may become a challenge as the Daleks have been on telly as long as The Doctor himself.

Other- I like Daleks but I think they should be trotted out only once per series or even once per two series or else it gets a bit overwhelming. We certainly had enough of them in the last few series, so let our new Doctor meet them and then give them a rest for a series or two, and the same with the Cybermen. Hey- can't they 'mine' more classic aliens other than the big two? No, I don't mean bringing back Alpha Centari, but there are quite a few monsters and aliens which would be a nice treat for the old classic fans to see once again. -Paula

To be honest I wouldn't mind another story with Alpha Centauri..

Provided within the plot he has aged and or developed a virus which means a slight change in voice..

It would involve Peladon, which would be a good source of stories perhaps played over a few episodes.

Daleks are a bit too limited to keep making so many repeated returns..

It's a bit like having curry every night, once a month great but on such a frequency that we seem to experience you may find the fall out a bit much. Grin

Maybe thatīs why they use a Dalek story so soon in the series. So we can have the whole season without them Grin
Also, Peter loves Daleks so I guess he wanted to face them as soon as possible...however, he seems to love a lots of classic monsters who I donīt even remember and I only watched the classic last year Grin I guess he really is a big fan Grin

Agreed. Last season, the Ice Warriors came back in a fairly good episode, and were updated in a way that was respectful to their original design. (The same couldn't be said about the Silurians, sadly.) We could have one or two more Ice Warrior stories, or how about bringing back the Sea Devils in a Lovecraftian horror story? Maybe have the Doctor meet a young H. P. Lovercaft in a place like Innsmouth, where the Sea Devils seem to be taking over- and it inspires him to write, in a similar way that H. G. Wells was in Timelash.

Asylum of the Daleks was awesome!! One of my favourite Dalek stories of all time... one of my favourite Doctor Who stories of all time per se. The style of both the design work and the type of story was pure 60s Dalekmania homage, with a nod to contemporary fantasy horror but no more, and the way that Amy and Rory's mariage was worked into the telling of that story was great mechanism - but I guess the emotive, relationship heavy style of new-Who and the regular references to the past have to be your thing for this episode to also work for you; I know that both of those elements, that I consider the episode's greatest strengths, are things you don't look for in the show... So you are ready to hate it even before it aired.

There are other reviews out, positive ones. I saw the episode already (the leaked version) but I am not going to give anything away - just that Deep Breath seems really the weakest episode so far and this one is a good start for the new Doctor.
