Blake's 7 cast wish list
Spaceship Dispatcher
Its a question that's probably been asked before, but...

Out of the actors who were active on UK television in the late 70s and early 80s, who would you like to have appeared in Blake's 7 that we didn't see? Excluding A-list celebs and Doctor Who/Companion actors.

For myself, I think John Carson would have made an interesting villain...
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

Peter Gilmore (Captain Onedin, swoon thud!). I also used to think he'd make a good Doctor.

Well, while we are on the subject of swoon, thud...Robin Ellis..alias Capt'n Poldark (to be said in a very dodgy Cornish accent!)

Sorry SD- but my mind has come up blank as to actors from the 1970-80's I'd like to see appear in Blake's 7. But....

Having been watching series like The Tudors, The White Queen, Pillars of the Earth and The Borgias recently, I thought that if there was a reboot of Blake's 7 with all new actors, then we'd like to see James Frain (Cromwell from The Tudors) as Blake and Aneurin Barnard (Richard of Gloucester in The White Queen) as Avon. I've also been looking at Holliday Granger from The Borgias as a possible new Jenna- but haven't made up my mind as of yet. But she certainly is blonde and beautiful at that. -Paula

I've just been re-watching I, Claudius (the classic BBC production). Several things struck me:

1) I'm a mad, sad fan for being distracted in almost every episode by the random appearance of Coser, Ro, Selma, et al. I was expecting Mr. Blessed but, good grief!

2) Why does the beeb insist on re-editing such a stone-bonker classic so that scenes I distinctly remember no longer exist?

3) Surely a trick was missed when B7 failed to cast Sheila White (Messalina) as Piri? Her innocent-little-girl-lost/stark-raving-sex-crazed-homicidal-maniac was unsurpassed...

Cool

I, Claudius well deserves it's reputation. It's great seeing all the future B7 actors, but I also always think Livia = Servalan and Tiberius = Travis.

The novels would be in my list of favourite books, if ever I was to think about it. Robert Graves is up there with George Orwell as far as clear, eminently readable prose is concerned.

Back on topic, if we weren't restricted to living non A-list UK actors, I certainly would've plumped for Humphrey Bogart as Avon's father. Sadly the once Mrs Bogart, Lauren Bacall, passed away only yesterday.

It's the battle of the booming Welsh voices when Blake comes up against Federation forces led by an efficient, eye-popping Section Leader played by Windsor Davies. Perhaps some here can imagine his crack team all armed with street signs - with deadly sharpened corners!

"MOVE YOURSELVES, MOVE YOURSELVES!"

LOL JD, yes I can - that's brilliant Grin

He was a great BSM. I'd love to see him playing the same role straight, in command of a proper fighting force!

Add John Rhys-Davies as a local rebel leader and you have the welsh baritone equivalent of the Three Tenors!

Cool

Either Jeremy Brett or Simon MacCorkindale as Avon's brother.

Sian Phillips would have been very interesting in just about any role. Look at her portrayal of Livia! She out-Servalaned Servalan!

How about John Castle or Nigel Terry? Ever see 'The Lion in Winter'? Those two were excellent as sneaky, scheming siblings Prince Jeffrey and Prince John.

Anthony Hopkins would have been great, but a real pipe dream.

How about Stewart Granger? He was a very good actor, and he wasn't all THAT old at the time.

Aneurin Barnard was in 'Cilla' a 3 parter which finished on Monday. He was fantastic playing our Cilla's boyfried-soon-to-be Hubby Bobby Willis. I kept saying to myself...I know him. He had dyed his hair blonde, which was why I couldn't place him.
But yes, in the White Queen, I found myself saying, 'He'd make a brilliant Avon'.
By the way, Brad Paula, if you should catch this programme, just see what they have done to your very own Ed Sullivan!!!! I've caught some of his shows...even Hubby said "Who is that supposed to be?"

Stanley Baker and Patrick McGoohan.

If Roy Kinnear can be in it, then how about a cameo from Eric and Ernie as two bored registrars the crew have to run past at some Federation centre?

Ian McKellan as the President of the Terran Federation (I'm thinking of his Richard III of course).

@Littlesue: I just saw Aneurin Barnard in a Miss Marple the other night- he seems to be getting around quite a bit. Yeah, he could play Avon, James Frain as Blake- hey I only wish we fans could mount our own remake of the series!

As for Ed Sullivan- I'll have to watch out for Cilla- you know Ed Sullivan's claim to fame was bringing to Beatles over to America. I can attest to that, I was there at the tender age of 8 when I watched their first appearance and my Grandma, who was visiting us, asked if I liked them. I said no. The next week the Beatles played the Sullivan show again. Again, Grandma asked if I liked them, and by then my friends at school had brainwashed me into saying, yes, I loved the Beatles. Still do- so your mentioning of Ed Sullivan brought that memory back. Thanks! -Paula

An actor called Jay Benedict played Ed Sullivan. I've seen some of the old Ed Sullivan shows (I love the ones with Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley) and Mr Sullivan seemed to be very tall, thin and elegant. Watching the Beatles on that show back then must have been something else. All that screaming!!
Mind you, over here things got a bit dangerous when Mr Robert Vaughn popped over because the Man From Uncle was proving such a hit. I recall him telling an interviewer that he suddenly found himself surrounded by a hoard of screaming young ladies..and he didn't have a security guard or anything like that...he was lucky to get out alive!!!
