New Horizon Poll
JustBrad
I'm reading this as 'Favorite Character' rather than Hero.

I'm therefore going to cross out the word Hero....
And vote for Avon.

There are times I love Avon... Well, no, there aren't really....
There are times I hate Avon.... rather a lot.
But I am always interested in watching, even as he paves the path of his own destruction. It's rather like watching Lear in that way.

Avon was a unique character at the time, a Neutral Evil character thrown in with a party of (largely) Chaotic Good characters. And when he tries to change his own alignment to Chaotic Good in the fourth season, he goes mad, just as the AD&D rules on alignment change said he might.

Okay, I think I've over-geeked myself.

In summation, we had two full seasons of Blake's 7 sans Blake. Not sure we could have had two full seasons without Avon. I therefore vote for him not in spite of his flaws, but because of them.

Absolutely! And when we come to do a poll for favourite crew member of Og's 7, feel free to vote Og!

I agree with that (even though I voted for Vila). Also, Avon (as a character) works well with several of the other characters - and seems to bring out the best in them. All the most interesting pairings of characters, imo, involve Avon eg. the Avon and Blake relationship; the Avon and Vila comedy double-act; the Avon and Cally possible romance; the Avon and Servalan mutual fascination thing. That must be the sign of a great fictional character.

Had never actually thought of it like that before - good point! Totally agree. Happy
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

I sort of agree, I think that he is the most complex of the characters allowing him more latitude in behaviour that can be used to demonstrate characteristics of the others. He is also quite ambiguous which opens up the chance of some subtly of moral shading around him. It make him by the far the most interesting character to write for and with.

Re Blake's 7 without Avon?

(remember quoting guidelines guys!)

Certainly its possible, Blake's 7 has so many interesting characters we could certainly have done 'without' Avon.

Many of my favourite scenes in B7 don't feature Avon at all. He's the 'icing' on the proverbial cake in my view rather than the main ingredient.

Totally without Avon? I mean, if you write my handsome hero out, can I have him for some company please? ( *blush* and hastens to say: just to eat chocolate dipped cookies of course...)

I once had thoughts about Cally taking the lead instead of Avon. It could have been interesting as she was initially a respectable warrior girl with intentions to fight the Federation, close to Blake, whom she admired.

My favourite episode from Albert doesn't have Avon in it.

I'm amused with the discussion of the relative "gitiness" of the characters. A major strength of the show is in how very human the characters are, warts and all. I can see some of myself in all of them, though sometimes that worries me.

As far as favorite character, it has always been Jenna for me, both as a kid and now. Intelligent, competent, independent but loyal, pragmatic but wanting to believe and I do envy the cool-under-fire. It is too bad that after a strong start, she was marginalized in Barney.

I'm intrigued to know what these are, PS!
Unsurprisingly, as it's my fave episode, many of my favourite scenes are in 'City'. But what are yours?

Mine has EVERYBODY in it - first and imo best of the 'ensemble' episodes in which everybody gets something to do, and Servalan, Travis and the Hugbot make their debuts...

Generally they are scenes with Vila (potentially my favourite character along with Blake, Jenna and Avon) I also liked Blake helping out Belfriar (now he would have been interesting if he could have somehow got onto the Liberator.) In Trial with have some interesting dialogue between Travis and Parr. I'm not saying I don't like scenes with Avon in it (far from it) But like others here, I think, I like the subtle mix of diverse characters. But Avon is a part, a very welcome part, and I'm glad he's in it.. But Avon is just one facet of B7's many strengths.

Back to Vila's early dialogue, 'Early Maniac' & ' liking God's taste in servants' talking to Arco and Gan in Cygnus and of course his scenes in City with Bayban and Kerril, (also Norl and Sherm too)

Regarding absence of Avon, I was only talking about the theoretical possibility of Avon not being in B7 (but keep Blake and others) for a few episodes, or even a season without diminishing what B7 is/was. Perhaps he does take a break with an admirer and indulge in cookies, cocoa or whatever! Grin I feel Blake's 7 strength is its vast range of characters, the good, the not so good, the downright bad and the ugly. I could list many characters that we briefly see that could be an interesting contrast to Avon and if used may have involved many plots in some of the episodes perhaps have different flows and outcomes.

Oooh, this is taking an interesting turn! I was going to post a question in another thread when I noticed this poll had started. I'm sure the question has been asked before, but not by me and I'm intrigued; is there anyone out there who rates Avon as their (ahem) least favourite character? I don't mean second or third, but actually wa-ay behind the others?

{ducks}

There you go. I've pulled the pin, lobbed the thing, now let's see what happens...

Cool

Will start another thread on the prospect of Blake's 7 without Avon..

(in part or its entirety) over in the Duel section.

Perhaps also discuss that possibility over in the Duel section too, Sopron.
Although I'd doubt it, but who knows. I have been wrong before! Grin

Will provide a link when done. But must dash to work so it wont be until this evening at the earliest.

B7 without Avon????
I look forward to this discussion in another threadGrin
I remember watching The Way Back, just because Mr Nation had created the programme and ever since I had seen his name on the credits for so may other shows that I watched (from the moment we got that box in the corner in 1963).
It was the very last bit that grabbed my attention when Gareth turned to the camera and announced that he was coming back (to Earth).
Okay, that was cool....
Episode 2......
Well now......what can one say?
From his very first introduction, before he even uttered a word...I was hooked on this character called Avon.
And I still amAngry
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
