The only jarring note for me was the portrayal of Lord Peter, who was much older and less athletic looking than I had imagined him. I am a bit ambivalent about Ian Carmichael too. Part of the problem is that in the novels Wimsey started out a as a bit of a clown, and then changed as he went along. Once Harriet got into the act, he very much turned into the thinking woman's (read DLS) crumpet. Ian C. does a good job of the earlier Wimsey, but you can't really imagine him as a romantic figure. Edward Petherbridge later played the part when they filmed the Harriet Vane stories, and I have to say I preferred him as being more like the Wimsey of the later novels. He and Harriet Walter were ideally cast for those parts. All the same, I still have a lot of time for Murder Must Advertise, both book and TV adaptation. By the way, The Nine Tailors (also with Carmichael) features both David Jackson and Peter Tuddenham so these adaptations are indeed a rich source of interest for Blake's 7 fans. I've been wondering whether to start a "Favourite novel/author" thread. The thinking woman's crumpet.... mmm. Another PW fan here. I must look out for that Nine Taylors production. Murder Must Advertise is surely too good for tv adaptation? Mind you, I could see Paul Darrow as a wonderful Mr Tallboy. Presumably with the same domestic arrangements as in the book?... (And Harriet Walter does remind me a little of Jan Chappell) "...before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird |

Haven't seen Murder Must Advertise, though the book is excellent. I think I second the votes for Doughty in Drake's Venture and the Sheriff in Robin Hood. I know they're both very 'Avon-ish' roles, but I do think PD has benefited from being a bit typecast (though Robin Hood came before B7 if I remember correctly). (And Harriet Walter does remind me a little of Jan Chappell) Ah - so it's not just me who thinks that! "...I don't like an unsolved mystery." -Avon, Mission to Destiny |

If we're avoiding stage plays that obviously only the people who saw them can comment on, I'd like to nominate the 1980 radio play The Silver Sky by Tanith Lee, a time-travelling tale with PD as Paul Baxter. Loved it on broadcast, love it now. Excellent performance from Paul. If we're going to delve into stage work, I'm thinking maybe Terra Nova (Paul as Robert Falcon Scott). Yes! The silver Sky was so great, but then I do feel Paul baxter was really Avon, as Tanith Lee loves him so much. I didn't see Terra Nova sadly, as that sounded brilliant. So I'll have to go for Elvis. ![]() |

I recently was able to hear the Silver Sky for the first time, thanks to a generous Horizon board member! And yes, it's wonderful, it's Avonesque all over. Tanith Lee is the more a fantasy writer than a science fiction writer, but though she manages to keep Paul Baxter in Avon style. I love this audio play, Paul Darrow caught me once again and moved me with his excellent performance! Does anyone know if the intended Paul Darrow reads "Rebecca's World" has already been produced? I have the book and I love PD's acting, so I am waiting patiently.......... .....I want to tell, but I can't..... ...I promised.... |

That was Paul's voice all right. I'd recognise it anywhere. |

I'm in midst of watching Dr Who and the Silurians, with Jon Pertwee as Doctor #3, & Paul Darrow plays UNIT Captain Hawkins. It's not a small part, fair number of speaking lines & lots of good scenes featuring Paul Darrow. In the commentary (which is 800x better than any on the B7 DVDs, argh!) he's pointed out a few times: "There's Paul Darrow", "Here's Paul Darrow again, Captain Hawkins"... IMHO this DVD is a must for Paul Darrow fans. Here's a few screenshots: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Never enough of hearing his voice..... Has anyone seen "Battlespace" ? Paul is de voice of Horondo the computer. The movie doesn't seem to be good, but aw, it was a fan's dream to meet the actor of our Avon! Recently stumbled onto: makingof3. interview with the creator. I found a free watch here. ![]() ![]() If you have a better file, please let me know? Edited by Lurena on 17-05-2010 08:40 .....I want to tell, but I can't..... ...I promised.... |

You're right, there's no mistaking *that* voice! ![]() I re-watched The Strangerers just recently - that is such a great role for PD. It's a very funny show and Jack Docherty/Mark Williams are a joy to watch. Unfortunately I've only ever caught the odd clip of him in Emmerdale. I'll have to see if youtube will oblige me further. My favorite PD role outside B7 has to be Drake's Venture - fantastic peformances from PD and John Thaw - although it's some years since I last saw it. I've tried to track it down from time to time, but haven't had any luck so far. I don't suppose anyone would know where I can get hold of a copy (or would be prepared to upload)? What? I don't understand. Where's the tea? |

Digging out the things had wanted to post a month ago I found this link to give you an impression of what the "Eye of Queen" game is like. Here, next to the music of the famous Queen, you can hear Paul Darrow, Janet lees Price (Darrow), Peter Tuddenham and Jacqueline Pearce!

Here is another link to please you! Hostile Waters (called Antaeus Rising in the USA) is an SF game narrated by Tom Baker (Doctor Who) and the two principal advisers to your character, Church and Walker, are played by Glynis Barber and Paul Darrow ! There is a lot of it to watch and listen to, start here: The Intro video for Mission one this is shown when a new game is started. Internet is wonderful, isn''t it? Otherwise we'd never been able to enjoy these items! Has anyone that game? .....I want to tell, but I can't..... ...I promised.... |
