Adventures with the Wife and Blake

I've always felt that D was a Season Too Far, and at times it shows, but D also contains some of the best of B7, including Orbit, Warlord, and Blake. Without those episodes, Blake's 7 isn't the same.

Peladon, I see your point to a certain extent, although I still think good TV programmes grow as they go along rather than wither.

The counter-argument is the characters grow as it progresses, as the writers take on board the input of the actors and use that to add to the melting pot.

I can think of very little series which are at their best in Season 1. Although another Terry Nation series, Survivors, is at its best in its first series, simply because it changes too much between series, something B7 never really does, as B7 always stays true to its original concept. Even after the Liberator is blown up, the series is quickly reset back to how it was.

And even Gareth has admitted he found the original character of Blake a bit dull to begin with. But from "Redemption" onwards, Blake is a much more interesting character, because Terry Nation had seen Gareth playing the role and thought: "I like what he was doing there."

Survivors series one is very good, season two gets a bit cosy, but my fave stories are all in series 3 which is very uneven but has some brilliance mixed in with the dross.
Last Laugh. mad dog, little learning are wonderful stories, the best of the series but Power is awful! Quite the worst story and I'm including the Witch!
Also love Law of the Jungle, A friend in need and Corn Dolly. Law and order excellent in series one

I just think a smuggler/skilled pilot is more intrinsically interesting than a teenage weapons designer - a charismatic revolutionary is more interesting than a soldier - and a telepath is more interesting than a gunslinger. They started out a bunch of difficult people with amazing technical skills, and we ended up with a team of killers.

Agreed - it might be one of the reasons I don't get into the final season, although that's not to say that I don't like Steven Pacey or Glynis Barber because I do.
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

In my opinion, many series improve as time goes on - partly, as Trevor Travis says, due to the writers responding to the input of actors - and also seeing what works for the drama with the cast they have. Some characters work unexpectedly well together; or a minor character becomes an audience favourite; or a new writer or director joins the team. I can think of many series where I think the first series was not the best (eg. Red Dwarf and Blackadder).

Having said that - I do like the first series of B7 the best. I think Terry Nation came up with the ideal emsemble of characters at the beginning, and I personally never liked any of the later characters as much as the originals.

It's good for a show to change and evolve, and there was plenty to enjoy in every series - but I loved the original concept, and so the first series is my favourite.

Regarding "Red Dwarf", I think the *fifth* season was the definitive one.

"Five" is my second favourite, behind "Two".

I love it all (even the "bad" stuff) but series 1 and 2 are my favourites.

Does anyone have info on when the S4 overview will be posted? IIRC the blog said "in September" and, well, it's half over....

I love the extract from 'Macarthur Park' at the end!
'Someone left my Blake out in the rain'.
There's a fan vid somewhere there!!!

I liked the drum and bass bit immediately prior to it- you could get a full length track out of that with some juicy dialogue clips. Anyone remember MC Parker and the Thunderbirds Krew? It would be like that, but better because it's B7!

There's another bit of music that sounds just like the opening bit of B7, but for the life of me I can't remember what! I thought it was Manilow's 'I write the songs - I am music'. Can any one help this poor old soul whose memory has developed a rather large hole??

I remember that one, simply because of the B7 theme in the middle! It was by John Miles, and it was called Music.

"Music was my first love, and it will be my last- music of the future, and music of the past, to live without my music will be impossible to do, for in this world of troubles, my music pulls me through"- then the B7 theme kicks in with gusto! It dates back to 1976, so maybe Dudley Simpson got the idea from it?

It was nice that they acknowledged the Horizon protest rewatches!

Looking at the chart, it's quite fascinating to chart Sue's reactions and scoring and the way it grew throughout the series until she was awarding episodes higher scores than I would!Smile

Yes, Yes, Yes!!
I've just found it on You Tube (again). There must be someone out there who could use the musical bit to make a fan vid and maybe even put a bit of Macartur's Park in it as well!
I'm going back to listen to it again................
