The Champions Rewatch Episode 30 – Autokill
Time to dust off your box sets and windup YouTube for the very final time, boo, and join One Spare Part, Ellen and I for the final episode of the series on Sunday 19th September at 9pm.
Yes, the very last episode and what an episode.
Written by Brian Clemens and directed by Roy Ward Baker.
Starring Eric Pohlmann (again) last seen in Get me Out of here! He must have been persuaded to return and what a return he makes!
Paul Eddington. Jim Hacker from the Yes Minister series and of course, Jerry from the Good Life.
Plus others...
So here we are, after 29 weeks THE final episode, There is but one word to describe this episode…
FIGHT!!!
Yes, this episode contains what many consider to be the best punch up in ITC history. Not just the choreography, but the music as well. Someone decided to put this fight to the music that is normally found in the Saint, but which originally was written for Gideon’s Way, and it works beautifully.
But how do we get to this fight?
Well, it seems that Mr Pohlmann (ITC’s answer to Sidney Greenstreet) wants to destroy Nemesis from within by sowing the seeds of distrust and suspicion.
So enter George Brading a Nemesis agent who has been missing for a few days.
He is brought back to HQ in the company of Paul Eddington who claims to be a Police Officer, and who loves to extol the beauty of Switzerland.
But our George isn’t listening.
Jim Hacker waves off our George and like a missile he homes in on a target within Nemesis. And an American Colonel played by Bruce Boa gets shot…several times.
But how has this happened?
A drug, says the Good Nemesis Doctor, who begins to sport black eyes as George gets more and more restless…until he pops his clogs.
Next, Tremayne decides to go for lunch, but checks with security to see if his missing briefcase has turned up?
“Not yet sir” comes the reply.
And Tremayne goes missing, but not before we see him being invited into the same police car by smooth Jim Hacker.
Hours later (what a long lunch) Tremayne returns in the same police car.
“Here he is” says Craig looking out the window and seeing the car.
Tremayne is not happy; maybe his lunch disagreed with him, so our heroes call in the good doctor and Tremayne goes for him. Thankfully, our heroes soon put a stop to that by landing on poor old Tremayne (or at least his stunt double).
So what is this drug?
A sample is needed…
Then Richard, while out for a stroll, gets bumped into by Mr Pohlmann outside Nemesis.
Cue Twinkly music…”Hey Richard,” says Craig, “Where are those water skiing photos?”
“In my wallet”, Baby Blue eyes responds.
“Let’s see them...”
But alas, Richard cannot oblige as Mr Pohlmann has nicked the said wallet, so Richard now knows that he is next in line…
And soon Baby Blue Eyes is invited into the police car by good old Jerry.
“Where are we going?” asks RB.
“To sector 13,” replies Jerry
More twinkly music and Craig and Sharron now know that whatever happens to these Nemesis chaps is happening at the police station in Sector 13…
…except that somebody lied, because the police chappies have no idea what Craig is talking about despite Craig insisting that Richard went through THAT door!!
‘cept there isn’t a door, just a wall.
Back to Nemesis and both our heroes are at a loss what to do next.
“The car,” says Sharron, “Maybe the registration number could help?”
So begins the run up to the FIGHT!!!
Can Craig remember the registration number of the police car?
Meanwhile, Baby Blue Eyes, with his posh shirt sleeve rolled up, is undergoing all sorts of nastiness as Mr Pohlmann, with the aid of Jim Hacker rewrites RB’s past history and blames everything on THIS man!!
Cue a large black and white piccie of Craig on a spinning photo frame….and RB begins to believe it and he is not happy...
Craig and Sharron have, meanwhile, found out who owns the dubious police car and he lives right opposite John Mannering’s antique shop…The Baron to his friends!!
There now follows a lively chat with Jim Hacker...
“My face,” wails Jimbo, “don’t mark my face!”
“Mark it,” growls Craig, “I’ll rearrange it for you.”
And now, stand by for action...
..As Craig opens the door and finds Baby Blue Eyes slumped in a chair…..

Were any animals hurt during the making of this episode? I don’t think so.
Will our heroes get a sample of the drug? Not if Mr Pohlmann and his nice shiny shoes have anything to do with it; stomp, stomp!
But a lot of scenery gets busted as both Mr Gaunt and Mr Damon go hell for leather at each other’s throats. Sharron is in there too, but I think her stunt double takes over a bit especially as there are large chunks of wood flying around,. (But our Sharron does get to chuck Mr Pohlmann over his desk. Go girl!!)
Just how many capsules of Kensington Gore were used in this episode, as Mr Gaunt looks to have a couple or more in his mouth for the final couple of punches.
And speaking of punches, will Talking Pictures cut THE last punch? ITV4 cut it. Why?? Even my then 9 year old Grandson decreed that Craig obviously didn’t want to do it.
Could it be they took exception to our Sharron grabbing Baby Blues Eyes by his hair?
Who knows?
I shall record the Talking Picture episode to see if they do cut out THAT punch, but watch my DVD first to see a really brilliant punch up…and then that is the end, sadly. Like most ITC shows back then they just finished, no real finale. I think only Department S went on and morphed into Jason King, but less said about that...
So, you are all invited to share with One Spare Part, Ellen and I a truly fab show with a fab ending this Sunday at 9pm.

Just watched Autokill on ITV4 this morning...they've cut out punches and the bit where Baby Blues Eyes is thrown into a pile of wood!
Will Talking Pictures follow suite??
If so, why?
It was okay back in 1969 when I saw it on a Saturday at 7pm.
So, what has happened since then????????Angry

This is an exciting end to the series. Luckily in this fight no one gets killed dead as a Blake.

According to ITV4 no-one in THAT fight got punched. I shall record Talking Pictures to see if they do the same thing...completely butcher the best fight ever!!!
