UK Rewatch - C5 The Harvest Of Kairos
trevor travis
The episode: Colin Five - Carry On Captain Shad (The Harvest Of Kairos)
The date: Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which Sid James stars as Jarvik, Barbara Windsor as Servalan, Kenneth Connor as Captain Shad, Kenneth Williams as Avon, Joan Sims as Cally, Charles Hawtrey as Vila, Jim Dale as Tarrant, Valerie Leon as Dayna, Peter Butterworth as Zen and Orac, and Hattie Jacques and Bernard Bresslaw as Boris The Spider. Oooooh, Marton! There's double-entendres aplenty, as all your Carry On favourites travel to the planet Kairos at the time of the Harvest, and Avon shows Cally his big rock!

Episode in a word: Smeghead! (Who? Keep on reading! )
Characters to cheer: It’s very hard not to like Jarvik The Caveman, despite him being a bit of a sexist. Or is he? I dunno. Ladies, what do you think? In any case, it’s Servie who has him carrying out her every whim and she also finally gets on the Libby flight deck. She’s great in this, with Jacs really enjoying the chance to camp it up – she plays a big part in making this episode so enjoyable.
Character to boo: To quote Dave Lister: “You know what the big joke is? From this particular phase in history we derive the phrase, ‘Beware of Greeks bearing gifts’ when it would be much more logical to derive the phrase, ‘Beware of Trojans, they're complete smegheads’!”. Well, it’s not just the Trojans, because that’s exactly what Tarrant falls for here. I bet it’s the last time Avon allows Tarrant in charge of the Libby for a week’s work experience.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Andrew Burt (Jarvik) was the original Jack Sugden in “Emmeradale Farm”. No really – he was!
Best line: “But first, there is the question of that degrading and primitive act to which I was subjected in the control room... I should like you to do it again.”

Dear Mum,

Who says Avon doesn’t form sentimental attachments? He’s fallen in love with a rock. Finally, something to keep Cally’s moon disk company. Avon said the magic rock lived on a planet with Earth-like temperatures. I guess it does, technically, as Antarctica is part of Earth.

We’re off to steal some Kairopan. What’s better, we’ll let other people do all the work, and then nick the goodies. That’s what I call real thieving. Only problem, despite having the fastest ship in the galaxy, Servalan beat us here…. Again….

Tarrant easily fought off three of the Federation’s newest pursuit ships… because the Feds wanted him to. They hid guards on the shuttle. And it really pains me to say this… Avon saved us.

Next, we easily loaded the Kairopan on Liberator… because the Feds wanted us to. They also hid guards in the Kairopan. Turns out it was an old friend of Tarrant’s pulling his strings.

Fortunately, Avon outsmarted Servalan, guaranteeing our safety.

Unfortunately, Servalan outsmarted Avon, guaranteeing our death.

Why do I feel like I’m playing for the wrong team?

And why has no one ever noticed the seven foot tall crab spider on Kairos? It shouldn’t be hard to find, it’s not like it’s a bald dwarf. And if the seven foot tall spider eats Kairopan, why haven’t they all starved to death with the Feds taking all the Kairopan?

Fortunately, Tarrant’s friend came down to fight Tarrant Man to Man, or is that Caveman to Caveman?

Unfortunately, Tarrant lost.

So Avon used his magic rock to save us all. He’ll be insufferable now. So, like Cally’s moondisk, let’s be sure to never ever mention the magic rock again, no matter how useful it might be.

Love, Vila

The trouble is, Much as I love this episode (Not necessarily for the right reasons) it doesn’t seem like the right one to start them off with.

Well I'm very unhappy 'cos Huggy's been and got a new job and I don't have to sneak about trying nor to be surprised by his lovely cartoons.
It doesn't worry me one bit that Mr Andrew Burt is wandering around showing off a bit of chest hair and being decidedly un PC....I love it!!
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.

Sue - you could always get a decoy keyboard and then regularly give it a soaking.

So this is the episode that caused Jan C to leave the series. It's not so surprising really. Not in production order, but so far series 3 has gone like this for her...

1. Week off
2. Mostly lying down in hospital gowns
3. Gagged and tied up - by a volcano
4. Dawn of the Gods
5. Chased by a bloke doing the wheelbarrow in an orange suit...

I have a check list too...
