UK Rewatch - C4 Dawn Of The Gods
trevor travis
The episode: Colin Four – Dawn Of The Gods (Carry On Going Baldly)
The date: Tuesday, July 27th, 2021
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which Orac does something really, really, really stupid; Avon does something a bit stupid; the Lord Thaaaaaaaaaaaarn does something very stupid; and Dawn doesn't do anything stupid at all, because she's not in this episode, despite it being named after her. Get out your Space Monopoly sets and your graphite writing sticks and join in with this rewatch of this undervalued gem.

Meanwhile, those of a nervous disposition are warned of just how scary the Slave Chasing Machine is. To quote the Cat, we may wish to go up to brown alert (obligatory Red Dwarf reference already taken care of.)

Episode in a word: Pencil.
Characters to cheer: Tarrant for his clever Bald Dwarf wordplay to stop the Caliph knowing the full nature of Orac, and Cally tricking the Lord Thaaaaaaaaaaaarn at the end.
Characters to boo: Orac is a prize idiot for wanting to take a closer look at a ‘fascinating’ black hole – he’d be reduced to atoms as well. And Avon, how was a spacesuit going to insulate you from a black hole? Go and sit in the thickie corner with Orac.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Recognisable Face: Terry Scully (Groff) was Vic Thatcher in the wonderful opening season of “Survivors”, who was initially left for dead in shocking style after a lie from Anne Tranter. Vic later re-appeared, confined to a wheelchair. He also played the devious Fewsham in the Doctor Who serial “The Seeds Of Death”. A very talented actor.
Best line: It has to be Vila’s “I'm in hell - and it's full of Avons”, although also deserving of a mention is: “So, the Lord Thaarn escaped. I suspect we have made another enemy. A pity.”

Dear Mum,

You know how rare Black Holes are, well, this makes two we’ve found. Technically, Jenna called the first one a Gravitational Vortex, but it felt the same to me. Jenna flew us right through that one. Tarrant flew us into this one, but couldn’t fly us out without help. I must be sure to work that into the conversation if Jenna and Tarrant ever meet.

This black hole harbored yet another Auron legend. First The Lost, now The Thaarn. How many megalomaniacs did the Auronar send out into the galaxy? The Thaarn is supposed to be some sort of legendary Auron god. I think his name is Dawn.

I had to go out in a space suit. It was very stuffy and my helmet was fogging up, so I drilled some small holes. Being a nice guy, I did it for Tarrant’s suit, too. It’s okay, no one will notice.

Guess who is working for The Thaarn? I ran into old Uncle Sebatian. Fortunately, he didn’t recognize me. He’s mad as ever, and still wearing his silly hat. (In this style 10/6). At least he’s mellowed a bit since the Vorlons brought him back. He has neuronic whip. It can turn an aggressive man into a gibbering idiot. In Tarrant’s case, I’m not sure I noticed any difference.

The Thaarn has a master control room, complete with a big red lever for the self-destruction of said control room. Reminds me of old Uncle Victor’s “We Belong Dead” switch. What is it with these mad scientists and their big self-destruct levers anyway?

We all escaped when Cally shot the Thaarn. He was a bald dwarf, and it turns out he was quite hard to find indeed, so Tarrant was wrong again.

Well, off to Kairos for a little larceny. Finally, a mission that plays to my strengths.

Love, Vila.

By the way, this will be my last rewatch troll contribution for a while. I've got a new job in Hamburg. For the time being, I will live in a furnished apartment until I find a new permanent home, and I won't have my troll drawing equipment with me. However, as I plan to drive back to Flensburg about one weekend per month, I might come up with a little troll every now and then, but not regularly. Which might help catching LittleSue by surprise!

Indeed! I only came to Wales to go to University. 25+ years later I'm still here. Welcome to Wales.

I very nearly started the Sapphire and Steel rewatch. I could be watching The Champions tmrw if I carry on getting the days wrong. And good evening.

Sue - that is a fantastic photo! I had one of them myself for many years. It was always on my desk when I was teaching. One day when I was on a course and a supply teacher was in my class it got smashed (along with half my classroom) when one of the children had a 'special moment'. It was quite hard to explain to the rest of the staff why I was so upset about an old pencil pot being smashed.

Does that mean that you would like me to look out for another as I tour various car boot sales?

Ooh no, mrs. We can't miss out your preamble. What would Tremayne think of that? I think we'd get a hard stare. Plus he'd slip us a mickey finn. No, get your preamble out. Let's do it right.

If you're being genuine there Sue - I'd love that. I was only sharing an anecdote, but not being able to get out anymore car boots are one of many things I miss. If you ever find another, I'd love it, pay you back for it and the postage and have a very nice bottle of wine delivered to you to spill all over your keyboard.
