Blakes 7 Reboot...
Steve White
Hi,

New here, and i'm not sure if this is heretical or not (so don't shoot the new guy... Please...) but has anyone heard any more news on Martin Campbell's proposed reboot of the show?

Last I heard it about it was the press release around 18 months ago, but theres been radio silence since.

I'm currently working my way through the classic series for the first time in donkey's years, and as much as I love the original, it does occur to me that, if handled properly, a modern take on the basic series premise could be amazing...

Like I said, I'm new here and I'm ignorant of the general consensus of opinion on this one so please don't teleport me into deep space... Happy

Steve

ps I really love that Slave smilie...

Hey Steve, don't worry in asking. There is no general consensus that I'm aware of.. opinions range from yes lets to a reboot to no way. Or a more qualified answer in between.

To be honest there has been so many false starts over the years, as you say done right it could be interesting.. Not all of my associates here may agree with what I have to say but I think actually there is no reason why it could not be both. The series could restart anew but also continue the legend of the old series. A cyclic repetition has been mentioned in a number of fan fictions and indeed the audio project 'Logic of Empire'.

To win wide existing fan support I think any project would need to include at least some of the cast members and to honour and respect Terry's original vision of the show. The aforementioned conceptual paragraph could fit quite well with Avon being freed from Federation prison/exile. It may also need to have new stakeholders as there is a lot of 'history' with the existing 'setup'

Like with any project it would be all in the detail. All I can say is don't hold your breath Smile

Hi Steve, welcome to the board! I think a new series would be really interesting, I just hope it could be as good as new Battlestar Galactica. However, I'm not sure if the recent rumours you mention did just turn out to be rumours with no substance, or whether something's really happening.

Thanks guys..

Personally I've ever since I saw the first series of the re-imagined Galactica I've thought Blakes 7 would be ripe for this kind of gritty/realistic treatment. They don't have to go as far as they did with Galactica, which was so unrelenting there were no high points, or light hearted moments. But then they were talking about the massacre of mankind, not too many laughs to be had with that one, I suppose...

My personal feeling are that it should start anew, rather than continue on from the old series. I'd love to see members of the old cast back as different characters though.

One thing I wouldn't change a jot would be the Liberator, both externally and internally. That has to be one of the most beautifully designed spaceships in sci-fi... Frown

Totally agree!

after some googling found the sky/syfy/B7 productions [ is this the campell reference ? ] post that the project had been abandoned. prequel stories are a good idea , even a generation before [ wouldn't mind seeing the battle the Liberator was in ] , a post classic series then something interesting . yes she is indeed a magnificent piece of hardware Smile .

I like the idea of prequel stories, seeing how the Federation got so corrupt.

Not sure if this has already been posted but it's the latest news I've found:

That news snippet is over a year old, personally speaking I wouldn't rely on it.

This made me smile in an Avon sort of way..

http://www.bbc.co...s-27834804

I try and think what more can you do with this show.. I suppose we could expand on their diet of toast and custard. What do I know being a humble mundane, member of the public! Grin

In a way I found Telebubbies sort of a season Eric for B7, where the Teletubbies are actually a 'Black Op' Federation Project. Where the brains of rebels are fused with fluffy organic husks. The doors of 'Tubby Base' are reminiscent of the Xenon base launch bay and Noo Noo is an interesting progression of Slave/Zen.

In any case a typical episode runs in a similar way to Animals albeit without Avon slipping on some Og 'deposits'

I used to love the Teletubbies! Before setting out for work at stupid o'clock in the morning, I'd have the choice of watching the early news or Teletubbies - and the TTs were a much nicer way of starting a stressful day. Especially when Hubby made me Tubby toast for breakfast! I think it's a shame that the new owners think it will be 'enhanced by CGI' - nothing dates a show more quickly than rapidly evolving digital tech, whereas live action has eternal appeal.

Never occurred to me that it could be B7 crossover, though - the mind boggles!

Yeah, pretty much sums up the reboot really. All talk and no show so to speak.

According to an article posted today on "El Reg" (a computer industry news service), the B7 remake is a casualty of Microsoft shutting down their XBox TV Studio this week:

Microsoft's Xbox TV studio OBLITERATED
Blake's 7 fans mourn, but Spielberg, Ridley Scott spared the chop

I don't see any mention of the B7 remake on the Web page referenced by the Register's article, though.

It was announced last August on The Register http://forums.the...exclusive/
and the BBC http://www.bbc.co...y-23712001
and the Guardian http://www.thegua...f-comments
and then almost immediately denied by Microsoft, which might explain why it's not on their web page! http://www.digita...l7wwKObO0u

Joe Dredd
He's CEO of Georgeville Television (and Motion Picture Capital). GVTV are the ones looking at doing the TV remake:

Thanks very much for that. Probably prudent of them NOT to put any dates beside entries on that "upcoming" page!

An adaptation of the 70s British Cult Classic, written by Joe Pokaski (Heroes, CSI). Martin Campbell (CASINO ROYALE, ZORRO Franchise, Last Resort) will direct the pilot episode and will serve as an Executive Producer on the series.

Decent director to do a pilot and then sit back as exec while Americans go make a very American show of their own.

Sounds a bit like the Doctor Who TV movie even. Pumped a load of money at a pilot and tried to appeal to British audiences as well as American, but the proposals for the subsequent series had it continued would have gone off at a very American angle and frankly I'm glad it never got made.

I fear it will be light hearted, go for glamour characters, teens, and "pop sci-fi" under an American rule (CSI writer doesn't fill me with hope). Unless it was driven by HBO who can pump out hard serious drama, which I feel Blake's 7 needs to be (eject all the alien of the week stuff and get into the grit of fighting the federation). Still, Battlestar Galactica managed well under a network studio, but then they put up a lot of money for it.

And, no...

http://www.nerdis...liberator/

... just no.
