I agree.

And were the Verenki there first? It sounds like the humans were colonists.

Yes, indeed.

Meanwhile, Cally is getting passionate. Oo-er!
My views are my own.

VILA: I'm entitled to my opinion.
AVON: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating.

As much as Jan knocks this out of the park, to coin a phrase, this story is not one of my favorites.

It is a bit of an odd one.

Speaking of growing things, how is your garden doing?

I have one (1) young tomato plant, a present from a friend. So far, it's been chomped by pigeons, slugs, ants, woodlice and caterpillars. I'll be amazed if it survives Sad

Years ago I tried to grow bell peppers. They were eaten by bugs, horrible large grasshoppery things. I hope your tomato does better.

Thanks!
Meanwhile, my pot of chives from last year is flowering. Chive flowers!

I have a chive and a mint plant. Both of those are doing well. I had lots of chive flowers this spring. One of my Chinese coworkers told me that she makes a jam out of the chive flowers from her garden.

Very out of character for her.

A lot of this is out of character. She would surely have sympathy for the Verenki - the way she refers to them as 'barbaric' (and worse) just doesn't feel right.

This is a very inhospitable world. What were the original colonists thinking?

And saying how ugly they are.

It feels almost racist, you know? Okay, the Verenki are ferocious creatures, but they seem humanoid - they've reached the tool-making stage of emerging civilisation. But constantly referring to how ugly they look is... de-humanising. Racist. Othering.

Maybe they crashed and had to make the best of it. I can't imagine choosing this world to colonize.

No food, hostile natives, lethal snake-things... nope, can't imagine either.

I was thinking the same thing. If his hand falls off he won't be able to replace the artifacts.
