The Champions Rewatch. Sunday 7th March at 9pm on Talking Pictures
littlesue
Talking Pictures have struck gold!
The Champions are back on Sunday 7th March at 9pm.
Episode One; The Beginning.
Well that says it all. How our three ordinary Nemesis agents suddenly became agents with Super Powers that even they don’t understand.
A mission behind the Bamboo Curtain; an escape, but their plane is hit and crashes somewhere in the Himalayas….
But that would spoil it for those of you who have never seen the series.
Starring Stuart Damon as Crag Stirling, William Gaunt as Richard Barrett and the gorgeous Alexandra Bastedo as Sharron Macready, plus Anthony Nicholls as Tremayne, their boss.
And also see if you can spot the actor who went on to appear in B7.

If you’ve never heard of the Champions or even seen it…then where have you been for the last 50 odd years?
Yes, it really has been that long since the dynamic trio burst onto our screens. For me it was on Saturday evenings at 7 pm…just after Star Trek TOS.
So why not join fellow Champ Fan One Spare Part and me to watch all 30 episodes again on a Sunday evening.
Put the date in your diary; circle it on your calendar and set your DVD recorder, then sit back and watch possibly the best (IMO) programme produced by Mr Monty Berman.
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

The pilot episode of The Champions is one of the best beginnings to a show in the ITC canon. The only start I could compare it to for quality is Anderson's Breakaway/Space 1999.
Obvs not including B7 in any of this.
The Champions is brilliant on many levels even in its daft moments. I haven't come across many ideas for a show more ingenious or imaginative than this. The sound effects for when they are using their powers is enough to make me tingle. A spider tingle, as Aunt May/Spiderman would say.
I am genuinely excited about doing this rewatch. As littlesue says: come join us for this rewatch. There is more in it than you know.

For instance:
The splendid scenic paintings of A J Van Montague…you really believe that you are in the Himalayas, or Antarctica or any other exotic location. If the archives don’t have stock footage then old A J can transport you there.
You can play spot the scenery with us; the staircase (every posh house has this particular one); the red wall paper and the matching green wallpaper...obviously a very popular pattern choice for walls back then.
The famous ITC Mews…where everyone in the ITC world seems to live.
Look out for the famous back lot of warehouses, which at the switch of signs and languages thereon can be either Rotterdam Europort or a port in Albania.
And don’t forget the back lot beach...
A world where there aren’t any mobile phones, where there are handy red telephone boxes everywhere, no seat belts and a handy pub for a swift pint…where the locals all look similar. Obviously a pub crawl was going on when the series was made.
For the chaps there are miniskirts galore and, of course, the beautiful Alexandra Bastedo, who with her blonde hair and various crochet dresses gives us ladies lessons from the Sharron Macready School of Self Defence. She deals with the unwanted attentions from several chaps and two hitch hikers with aplomb.
For us ladies, there are two handsome leading men who go about their business in suits, shirts and ties with matching hankies in the top pocket (and sometimes braces!!!), plus their choice of casual wear, but maybe not Craig's yellow roll top jumper or Richard’s yellow cardie.
And of course, look out for the episodes written by our very own Mr Nation.
So sit back and enjoy nostalgia at its best…and that includes the fab music!!!
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.

Just a reminder that The Champions starts on Talking Pictures on Sunday, 7th of March at 9pm.
Talking pictures can be found on the following channels:
Freeview 81
Freesat 306
Sky 328
Virgin 445
Or on You Tube (if you are lucky)
Or if you have the DVDs…you’ll just have to pause during the advert breaks!
I wonder if they will have the original advert break film bits?
Anyway, join One Spare Part and I for the first episode of this fab ITC series.
The Beginning, written by Dennis Spooner. Directed by Cyril Frankel.
With Guest stars;
The lovely Felix Aylmer (who seems to be in every film that is shown on Talking Pictures).
Burt Kwouk
And…..Eric Young, who you may recognise from the B7 episode Children of Auron where he played Ginka (where he is credited as Ric Young).
And you had better wrap up warm as our heroes crash their plane in the Himalayas (a very nice bit of model work by the way) and then spend their time wandering around a ‘snow’ filled sound stage, with a lovely painted background by the scenic artist A J Van Montague.
So it’s back to the 60s with no mobile phones, computers or a story arc in sight!!!
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.

To get in the mood for a nostalgia fest I shall be watching Richard Green in the Adventures of Robin Hood earlier on Sunday evening. That brings back memories of Sunday teatime back in the 60s for me. And it seems as though it always rained on Sunday back then.......

Sunday teatime? The BBC children's serial on tv and the Top 40 on the radio. Ham sandwiches and fruit flan with dream topping.

While I can't join in with this watchalong, I can confirm that this series is fab. Proud owner of the boxset. Love the friendship between Sharron, Craig and Richard and the unique bond and powers they share. Wish there were many more episodes!

Richard is my favourite. Grin

Being of a certain vintage, I can't remember for the life of me what dear old Mum used to serve up for Sunday teatime...but I think Butterscotch Angel Delight may have played a part once or twice!Grin

You have Richard and I'll have Craig. I actually removed the front cover of my Joe 90 Annual because there was a piccie of Mr Stirling on the reverse. I know...sacrilege.
