42nd Anniversary Rewatch - D9 Sand
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Nine – Sand (Carry On Getting Sand In Your Pants)
The date: Tuesday, December 1st, 2020
The time: 7.45pm UK time

A reminder of the Season Derek drinking game, with one special addition for this episode:

Here’s the number of sips/swigs per each of these:
Avon is knocked unconscious 1
A scientist dies/is already dead (per scientist) 5
A member of the main cast wears the same costume as last week (per costume) 2
There’s the sequence (or part of the sequence) of Scorpio landing / taking off at Xenon Base 3
Vila drinks something red (per scene) 10
Tarrant falls in love 5
Soolin shoots someone (per person) 5
Slave says “sorry” (each mention) 1
Each mention of “Sleer” 2
Avon laughs manically and/or smiles inappropriately 5
There’s a downbeat ending in sharp contrast to the jangly end theme 10
The final shot of the episode includes Paul Darrow 3
A member of the main cast is killed or stunned (per cast member) 1 bottle of wine / 1 can of beer
For each grain of sand we see on Virn 1

Back to the episode, and the crew go to the seaside on Virn, only to find that Servie has had exactly the same idea; Dayna is kissed not by a Hugbot, but rather by a bullet; Tarrant's taste in women moves on from a whiny assassin to a psychopath, albeit the most sexy psychopath in the galaxy; and in a twist, the scientist of the week is dead well before the episode has even started.

Episode in a word: Lovers.
Character to cheer: Servie. This episode shows her at her most vulnerable, unless she was manipulating Tarrant throughout, which is a very real possibility.
Character to boo: We asked Dayna Mellanby for her thoughts on this one, and she suggested Del Tarrant.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week: Yes.
Recognisable Faces: Stephen Yardley (Reeve) went on to play Ken Masters in “Howard’s Way”. Meanwhile, Daniel Hill (Chasgo) was one of the lead characters in the 1990s comedy “Waiting For God”, although he’s been in just about everything.
Best exchange: SERVALAN: “Oh, Tarrant. I'm just the girl next door.” TARRANT: “If you were the girl next door, I'd move.” SERVALAN: “Where would you move to, Tarrant?” TARRANT: “Next door.”
Blake's 7 will return in “Carry On Photocopying.”

Yes, bad enough that he had a tryst with Servie, even under the influence of the Sand. Far worse that the first thing he says when he gets back to Scorpio (in front of Dayna) is, I had a tryst with Servalan.

Not our Tarrant's brightest moment.

Thank you, TT, for bringing much needed variety to my time stuck in the house under lockdown. I'll be spending Tuesday evening in the bathroom, sitting on (or, more likely, bent over) the loo!

And for, " A scientist dies/is already dead (per scientist) 5 " - I assume the 5 drinks are for each scientist who is already dead up to the start of the episode, so Einstein, Newton, Galileo, etc.
Avon: "Not enough! Not nearly enough! Dammit, what weighs seventy kilos?"
Orac: "Vila weighs seventy-three kilos, Avon."
Avon: "Vila, are you here? I need your help."

The question is...do I have enough wine in the house for all the grains of sand on Virn?
And if I go along with ClareGC I shall be under the computer desk before the episode even starts..HIC!!!

Good point! I'll leave that up to your discretion Wink

To be honest, if you're already trying to keep up with the grain of sand entry, I don't think it makes much difference Grin

PS: Is this a good time to bring up that we're going to do a double header one week so that we end up with Blake on December 22nd (I'm thinking Orbit/Warlord on the 15th, but I will alert everyone on Tuesday and then we'll do a simple show of hands). Double the episodes - double the drinking!

Hmmm, are you saying they're already taking the drinking game as a recommended minimum and adding a bit more? Grin

I'm saying they need help....and I'd like to volunteer by taking some bottles (full) of wine off their hands...

Hands off my wine! I'm going to need all I can get as Dearest is due to have an eye operation and I have to go into self isolation with him from the 12 Dec....so I am not only stocking up on wine but also tubes of Prawn Cocktail Pringles!!!
And Mr Huggy, it was with some trepidation that I opened this thread...but I was fooled again by not seeing your name!! BUT, I had already drunk my Hot Choclate so nowt was spilt on my keyboard.
Sandwiches indeed!
And Mr Brad...that could be a brilliant episode of Jerry Springer. I can just imagine the punch ups!!!

I think I'm going to have to miss this tonight - I hope everyone has fun with the drinking game.

With other Monday/Wednesday relistens/rewatches, I think the only way we get to Blake on December 22nd is a double-header of both Orbit and Warlord on Tuesday, December 15th. What time do people want this to start? The usual time of 7.45pm of UK time (with second episode at 8.45pm) or an earlier start of 7pm of UK time (with second episode at 8pm).

7pm start is okay with me especially as I will be self isolating with Dearest after his eye operation

7pm OK by me too. I might fall asleep during Warlord otherwise.
