Golly, that's sad, Travisina. How long had you been there?
On the New Year thing, listen to 'Kippalive', they're enough to cheer anyone up.
Hi Stormy. So the naughty Geordies have to go home early? Can't see that happening without a fight.

Theyíll just get drunk earlier. I bet Vila would be up for a night out on the Biggmarket.

My other half (J) used to live in Newcastle for a while. I visited him there once when he had a sort of reunion with some students he used to hang out with. Nice city, friendly people, everything smelled of beer.
You're not sulking, I hope?

Today my notice period ended, and I officially became unemployed. Went into the office to collect what was left of my stuff.

Did you swap it for something unpleasant for the next occupant of your locker to discover, or did you resist the temptation?

I wanted to put a sign on my desk - BEWARE THE DESK OF DOOM!
because everybody who has sat there has ended up leaving:
Diane (our Supreme Commander) - left for less stressful job closer to home
Sarah (fundraiser) - left under suspicious circumstances
Rosita - contract not renewed after probation period
Howard - had a meltdown and stormed out
Me - furloughed and redundant-ed

But I didn't...

I was planning to finish the book yesterday, but Life got in the way (again) - even though it's an easy and fun read.

Iíve got plenty of time for reading coming up. Local lockdown starts at midnight here.

Oh crumbs. How does that affect you? Apart from the obvious - are you allowed out at all?

I can go out as long as I donít socialise, but I can go to the pub. Until 10pm, when my solitary drinking is curtailed by the hospitality curfew. I can see as many people as I donít want to in the office, though, so thatís all right.
Also, our figures (Northumberland) are lower than a lot of the country, but weíre next to Newcastle so we just got lumped in. Logical as ever.

That makes as much sense as anything else (scratches head).

I've got Jewish New Year coming up on Saturday & Sunday, and they *are* allowing synagogue services to take place under Covid regulations, ie in ours we can have up to 15 men & 10 women per service. So definitely more than 6.

I saw that on my calendar. Happy New Year, as it were. Take what we can get, eh?

Thanks, and indeed!

Liked your ficlet, btw, Stormy. Can't help feeling there's more to come after that ending!

I'd started as a freelance minute-taker in 2013, and the job just kind of evolved until I was full time doing about 4 different jobs including writing / editing / proofreading, tour organising, school inspection administration, communal diary managing...

Well, I've read it, and am currently reading it aloud to my other half. Not easy with all the footnotes, changes of font etc. We're about half way.

So, the book - as I said upthread, I'm about 2/3 of the way through and really really enjoying it. I remember this being one of my favourites back in the day, but I've not re-read for years and I'm loving it all anew.

I love that this is a classic police drama, with all the tropes turned up to eleven - - representativesd of two different races/species forced to work together and ending up bonding.
- the good cop having to hand in his badge & gun and forced to go rogue to solve the crime
- the female cop having to prove herself among the men

Yes, all that! Love Detritus going cleverer the colder he gets, too.

Fantastic! Smile
I've played a couple more minutes - it's lovely hearing them, and poignant 'cos usually we sing these as part of the service, but under Covid regulations we have to keep masks on all the time, and singing isn't allowed.

My favourite quote this time: 'personal is not the same as important' but spoiler alert that comes near the end.

Many more examples of brilliant names for the characters.

Back to the book:
I'm enjoying the burgeoning romance between Carrot and Angua, and the very gradual reveal that she's a werewolf. Pratchett has given this book a very nice structure.

Envious sigh - I struggle so hard to find names for characters in my ficlets. I've got a longish Jenna story that's been languishing unfinished for YEARS cos I can't find a suitable name for one of the main characters (apart from Jenna).

Burgeoning is a good word. Yes, Pratchett does a lot of thinkiing things through and working out details. The sort of thing that was so lacking with for example Cally being a telepath. So much they could have done if they'd thought that through
