I don't understand "Gold" (spoilers)
magnificat
Keiller lies to the Scorpio crew, saying he needs their help to get away after the jamming of the processor that turns the gold black... but secretly, he intends for the gold to turn black, knowing that he has a buyer in his old employer... Is that right?

Does he secretly set the alarm off or is that someone else's doing?

One of several issues in Gold that don't make logical sense! Another is why the mission continues after the first guard is attacked, and especially when the alarm is sounded, as the objective depends 100% entirely on secrecy and there being no suspicion of tampering. Its stated at the start of the episode that if the shipment is checked that the plan would be foiled before it started. Attacking the plant that does the conversion with alarms shrieking and a trail of deceased guards in their wake is obviously not what they wanted, so why go on with it?
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

Oh good point.... Everyone in that line of business will have been alerted!

But the gold *is* still black when the Scorpions are wheeling it away or did I get that wrong?

You do realise that I will have to watch this episode again?...Don't you?
Still, it will be worth it..just for the airlock scene and all that smoke and his hair getting all messed up....................
What was the question?Smile

Gold should have ended with Servalan wheeling her loot down to her local branch of cash converters.

There are several:

1) Did the group successfully prevent the conversion of the gold from gold to black, or did the conversion go ahead, with Avon reasoning that the sale could still take place to Keiller's employer?
2) Why did Avon deem it crucial that Keiller betray Servalan?
3) Was Keiller complicit in the alarm being sounded at the mine? If so did he set it off himself or just know the alarm was going to be sounded?
4) How were a whole troop of Servalan's guards able to infiltrate the mine without any of the genuine mine guards noticing? Where were they?
5) Why wasn't Avon suspicious when Servalan remained unperturbed during the transaction in the desert (or wherever it was supposed to be)? He thought she was knowingly paying for worthless stock?

Many Thanks

Plot holes aside, there's plenty of little touches I love about Gold: such as the music they play in all the scenes featuring the Space Princess, the sound of the wind blowing dubbed onto the scenes on Beta 5 to emphasis what a bleak, desolate place it is. Also the conversation between Avon and Servalan and the fact that this is very much an action based episode - must have put quite a strain on the S4 budget I would of thought.

Cracking episode; I loved it. Loved it but didn't get it.

I really don't know the answers...but I thoroughly enjoy this episode. I suppose sitting through almost 50 years of TV can have that effect. As long as it's a good story, well acted and well shot, I'm afraid I don't really notice such glaring plotholes...although I have sat through the last series of Dr Who and ended up completely confused. I usually turn to Hubby and ask..'What was that supposed to be about?' or, 'And the point of this episode was??'
And I shall be checking out that airlock scene later on this week......well someone has to do itSmile

It's half term school holiday and Grandson will be on this main computer for most of the week, which means that once I've finished the final touches to the items I'm bringing with me next Sunday, I shall have a few hours to while away..and I can sit down and watch 'Gold' on my big, flat screen TV.
Well, he can watch Minecraft Videos, so it's only fair that I can watch my hero get his hair all messed up!

Have just rewatched the episode and have another continuity curiosity for the list:

Its implied early on that Avon knows of Xerok by reputation, as he exclaims "the planet of gold" when Keillor mentions the name, but there is no indictation that Avon has spent any great time there personally; or in fact, ever visited the planet in person at all. In a later scene at the processing plant, he observes to 'the pretty one' that the guards in the chamber were not Xerok security but belonged to someone else? How do you know, asks Soolin; as do we all. The only basis for the conclusion, at least that Avon speaks aloud, is that the weapons were not standard issue for Xerok security guards. How would Avon have any idea what's standard issue for a world he's never been to? There must be dozens and dozens of varieties of high energy small arms, and supply contracts could change at any time. If anyone present is an expert on gun designs, its Soolin anyway!

In 1990, we did an interview with the writer of Gold - Colin Davis - which was published in Horizon Newsletter 24. It was a fascinating interview, in which he spoke about the whole process of writing the episode, the casting of Roy Kinnear, working with Chris Boucher and Brian Lighthill, the filming - and how he came up with the term Subneutronic Overlap Shift! There are plans for the whole interview to be reinstated on the website, but meanwhile, here are a few snippets:

The dialogue:
"It was very easy to write little scenes for Soolin because you could just have her say something slightly nastier than most people would dream of saying... Avon had to have an extremely clever, fencing style. The important thing between him and Servalan was the respect for a brilliant enemy..."

The character of Keiller:
"I imagined him to be a very smooth sort of bloke. Very ungiving, expressionless. That's what I thought I was writing. But the director phoned me up and said 'I've got this great idea - what about Roy Kinnear?' And Roy Kinnear was nothing like the bloke I'd imagined when writing it! But I'd seen Roy on stage a few times and I knew how good he was. If he wanted to play a devious bastard, he would find a way of doing it - which he did, brilliantly."

The warehouse scene:
"I thought it was bitty. They hadn't got enough shots to make all the points and it wasn't clear what was happening. I kept thinking, this isn't what I wrote. I'd gone over backwards to make it clear, but they hadn't followed that."

More to follow in due course...

Look forward to it Travisina...

Having read a review, it seems that the gold was definitely turned black in the processor. Presumably Avon held Servalan to the deal on the basis that that was her plan all along.... Although that doesn't explain why he says "You'll just have to pay up now".

It's definitely in my top five. It shows how different things have become since Season A. The idealistic rebels aboard an alien battleship have now become space pirates aboard a ramshackle cargo ship.

The gang's initial plan to fake the conversion enables them to obtain the reverse code needed to turn the gold back from black. They sell this to Servalan along with the black gold.

^^ final guess
