Reading Pratchett: Guards, Guards - 23rd April 2020
Travisina
Terry Pratchett - Guards, Guards

Date: Thursday 23rd April
Time: 8.15pm BST (time adjusted to allow for the 8pm 'clap for NHS' )

All welcome to join us for a chat about Discworld's take on policing and dragons. Bonus smiles for those lucky enough to have seen Paul Darrow as Vimes in the touring stage production.

brilliant, on stage, when the supposedly locked prison door swung open behind him. In hull. He gave it a look and a very Avon kick!

Back in the 90's, an old Horizon member, Joan Wakeman, sent us The Color of Magic (as an introduction) and Guards Guards!

We were instantly hooked on Pratchett. In particular, I became hooked on the Guards series, from Guards Guards to The Night's Watch.

I have an old habit (as does a friend of mine) of picturing actors portraying the characters in any good book I am reading, and there was always something about Vimes that made me think of Paul Darrow and Avon.

Yes, came to a theatre near me. Audience small (I live in a cultural desert) but those of us that were there raised the roof! It was brilliant. The staging was fantastic, the acting sublime. It was a thoroughly happy experience.

re the rating of Pratchett's books, shouldn't it be out of 7A?
I used to be such a sweet sweet thing
Till they got a hold of me.

If I could go back in time to see just one stage production out of anything I'd ever seen, it would be this. Paul WAS Vimes - and the whole production from start to finish was just perfect.

Do I get extra Bonus Smiles for having seen it 13 times in 8 different venues?

rojkerr1
wow, I saw it once in Hull! It was superb

Well, now!
We can discuss not only the book, but the show!

I saw the show 13 times before I actually read the book, but enjoyed the book too, thereafter (of course hearing Paul's voice when I read Vimes's words.)

Well, I have read the book, listened to the radio dramatisation and watched the play on youtube.

Maybe. I get fireworks across the valley.

Iíve read the book and seen the first bit of the play on YouTube. It only took me three hours to read the book.

My days of reading THAT quickly are long gone! Cannot concentrate. Old, old, old....
