I think he only starts to brighten up in Time Squad, and reaches peak Vila in 'Seek-Locate-Destroy'.

Vila is a much stronger character earlier on than is generally thought. He's still within his comfort zone, I think.

I think the lighting in this ep is good. It adds to the greyness and sort of smooths things. Don't know how it's achieved but I know there's something happening there.

This is such an important episode (I know fans who skip it because Avon's not in it!) - I think it's vital for the series and characters, and great intro to Vila and Jenna.
