41st Anniversary Rewatch - C13 Terminal

[...] the crew are stranded on the planet Terminal with Deep Roy to keep them company in a gorilla suit.

Does this mean that the episode takes place on 31st January (National Gorilla Suit Day)?

trevor travis wrote:

I think it needed the extra year. It certainly did in my case. Had Blake's 7 ended in March 1980, it would have been a rather foggy memory for me

Chances are that without Derek, I wouldn't ever have heard of B7 and thus wouldn't even be here with you now! And I am glad to be here. Strange how something as innocuous as switching to BFBS one day in 1981 and seeing a spaceship hover over smoke clouds can have life-changing effects decades later!

Character to boo: Oh, Avon, what did you do? Much of your criticism of Blake was valid, but here you repeat almost his every mistake. Not telling the crew your plans CHECK. Taking reckless risks CHECK. Falling into an obvious trap CHECK. Ignoring the advice of a fellow crew member, and therefore being responsible for their subsequent death CHECK. Yes indeed, just like Blake in “Pressure Point”, there will be a price to pay.

I think that is the whole point of this episode.

Avon: I always said we would manage better without you.
Avon: I want to free, of HIM.
Avon: He's used a number of ploys to get his way, but Just Try Trusting Me is weak, even by his standards.

Oh, the bitter irony.

Indeed.

Some of the dialogue is even almost repeated, with Tarrant playing the role that Avon once did:

TARRANT: “You should have told us. If your reasons for changing course were sound nobody would have given you an argument.”
AVON: “There's always an argument. My reasons for changing course were sound. You can take my word for it.”
TARRANT: “So tell us where we're going. Tell us why.”
AVON: “No.”
TARRANT: “And we're just meant to sit by quietly and let you do it, whatever it is.”
AVON: “That's exactly what you're meant to do. You and the rest of them owe me...”
TARRANT: “Do we?”
AVON: “...and I am calling in the debt. With or without your approval it is going to be done.”
TARRANT: “How do we approve of something we don't know about?”
AVON: “You could try trusting me.”
TARRANT: “All right, Avon, we'll try trusting you. Just don't expect us to make a habit of it.”

Bitter irony indeed...an ending indeed...but the impact comes with the 4th series...in Blake a legend is made.

On a recent team building event at work, we put in our votes to watch a film and the winner was “Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid”. *SPOLIERS* It has a legendary ending, not dissimilar to “Blake”. I once was channel-hopping, remembered the legend over its ending and watched (from what I recall) the closing segment. I then voted for it, because I’d never seen the whole film before – it turns out to be a really good movie. But again, much of its legend is driven by how it ends. I think “Blake” is the same. “Terminal” is a great episode which does finish on a cliffhanger, but it’s not nearly as memorable.

Fierce links indeed Hugbot! I don't mind being attacked by them. Smile

I think Sweevo's point has been made is spades by the fact that here we are in the Terminal thread, chatting endlessly about Blake.

Can't argue here!

Love Terminal but it felt somewhat incomplete, as almost everything in there was an illusion. Except the Libbie destruction and Zen's death - that was real, alas. Sad
But Blake - it's real, everything in there is real and earned, and the finale is as epic and gutting as it could ever be.

Hello everyone! Getting ready to laugh at the links and cry at Zen dying. Not to mention the LIberator going ker-pow for added measure. *sad*

I always wondered if the auto repair circuits might not put Libby back together given enough time... say, 39 years?

It worked in Red Dwarf.
