Forever Avon - Call for Contributors!
KentishSpaceRat
Greetings fellow Blake's 7 fans!

I am planning on producing an unofficial short story book in memory of Paul Darrow and to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund.

The book, titled 'Forever Avon' will be a collection of short stories chronicling various points in Kerr Avon's life, from his childhood and doomed love affair with Anna Grant to his reluctant career as a Hero of the Rebellion.

I already have a dozen or so fan fiction writers willing to contribute short stories (including Horizon's very own Supreme Commanders Jackie Emery and Annie Worrall) but I'm still on the look out for more submissions, which is were I hope some of you can come in!

I'm looking for 1,000 - 3,000 word short stories, it can be set during any period of the show's timeline and there's no guidelines to what you can and can't write about but it must heavily feature and/or involve Avon as a main protagonist.

This is a strictly non profit enterprise with no official endorsement from the Terry Nation estate (despite my earnest attempts to contact them) which means you will be essentialy offering your services for free BUT you will retain sole copyright of your work and I am currently investigating into trying to arrange discounts for every contributor.

If you are interested in contributing and/or have any further questions about the project then please PM me.

Oliver has kindly supplied some more details for anyone interested in this excellent project:

The Horizon forum has been the only place that that the "Forever Avon" project has been publicly announced so far. A dedicated Facebook (and possibly also a Twitter) page will be set up later in the year.

In general, the stories are designed to be standalone.

It's totally fine if you want to just write a standard B7 adventure with the other lead characters but just make sure that Avon plays a big role in the story's development (whether it's having the last laugh in an argument with Blake or solving the problem and being the hero of the day).

The same applies to point of view stories: as long it's about Avon or his mindset then there's no problem. You could even write one from the POV of another character.

At this stage the plan is to publish the book through Lulu.com's print-on-demand service. The editor is looking to get discount codes so everyone involved can get theirs at a cheaper price. Contributors retain copyright of their work but will be asked to wait a year from publication date before submitting their work elsewhere.

The cover is already planned but the editor is open to further art submissions including logos.

Sounds like a great plan!

There's currently no deadline but the aim is to try and get it done as soon as humanly possible, preferably in time for the first anniversary of Paul's passing next year.

I've just hastily done a first draft...and noticed that I can go upto 3000 words. So I can work on it and when Lurena returns from her hols she can look at it and maybe do one of her drawings.

Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

Can the stories be ones that have been previously published on AO3, or here on Horizon?

No worries Sue, don't feel like you have to extend it if you don't want to though. I'm sure it'll be good whatever the word count! Smile

*PROJECT UPDATE*

Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in contributing so far, the response and story outlines I've been recieving these past few weeks have been positively overwhelming and I for one cannot wait to see the finished results.

Speaking of final, the aim now is to get this book completed and published in time for the first anniversary of Paul's passing next year so if you're currently writing or considering about contributing then you have until late Febuary 2020 to submit your first drafts in.

I'm also on the look out for stories featuring Servalan, Travis and other rebels besides Blake, Vila and Cally so if you have any ideas involving any of those characters then please PM me! Grin

I must stress that it won't be a complete adaptation but a condensed one. Damien and Christian only got as far as producing the first nine pages before they had to sadly abandon the project due to recieving no permission (or any correspondence whatsoever) from the Terry Nation estate to publish it.

It's a brilliant idea and I'll be very pleased to read it. I suspect it would be too long to fit in an anthology anyway, without amendment, so I'm not too worried about it being abridged - just as long as we get to see some of Slave in it ("Just two words: more fuel!").

Without trying to overstep any marks, do you need permission from anyone? Given the whole book is about TN's character Kerr Avon (and others), wouldn't you need permission from the estate to do the book at all? And wouldn't they say "No, Big Finish have the licence at the moment"? And what about the other the copyright holders and licencees - the estate of Paul Darrow (the script) and the BBC (costumes and prop designs)? If you have to seek permission from one, wouldn't you have to get it from all?

If we regard the book as on par with a fanzine, presumably you can do it all unofficially, including the Man of Iron strip.

Perhaps it becomes more of a problem because the Lulu imprint assigns the book an ISBN, and/or requires certain declarations to be signed off?

(Just to be clear, I'm genuinely interested and genuinely asking. I have no idea what sort of minefield this situation presents but I'd be interested in knowing more.)

KentishSpaceRat
I can confirm Slave will feature in it, but as for "more fuel"? Watch this space! Wink

To say that the permission situation is a minefield would be a severe understatement! I have contacted Big Finish, BBC and nearly every company ever involved officially with the series about the rights and they've all pointed back to Roger Hancock Ltd (the overseers of Terry's estate). In the past 4 months I have sent Hancock Ltd three emails and even posted a written letter to their business address asking for their permission but I've not had a single reply... Damien and Christian faced the exact same problem which is why they abandoned the 'Man of Iron' comic.

Now the difference between mine and the 'Man of Iron' boys' project is that I intend to donate the profit from my publication to charity and not for personal gain, which probably gives me some extra leeway. Jackie and Annie have also asked other writers on my behalf about this issue and they claim that because my book is intended for charity fundraising only the rights holders shouldn't be too bothered about rights issues, the worse they could possibly do is order me to remove it from publication.

*PROJECT UPDATE*

Inspired by the the excellent 'Doctor Who: Target Storybook' I am now looking for artists aswell as writers to contribute to the project.

Much like the 'Storybook' my idea is for each short story to be accompanied by a signular, full page peice of artwork that either represents a iconic scene/moment in the story or the story as a whole.

If you are interested in contributing artwork then please PM me on here, DO NOT contact me through the email address above unless you have already done so in the past because I will not respond to it.

You have three excellent artists on this site:Rainez, Lurena and Hugbot: while the former two depict the cast realistically, Hugbot draws adorable troll versions of the characters. A direct message to each might be a good idea.
