41st Anniversary Rewatch - B9 Countdown
trevor travis
The episode: Barney Nine - Countdown (Carry On Ginger Mercenary)
The date: Tuesday, June 4th, 2019
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Sadly, Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderperson don’t appear, but instead the Ginger Mercenary does – I think Paula might like him. This week, we find out another way that the Federation keeps control, despite only having a handful of personnel on a planet. And poor Jenna and Cally are on Libby reception - again!

Episode in a word: Grant.
Character to cheer: The Ginger Mercenary, who seems to have liberated more planets than Blake (which isn’t that hard, to be honest).
Character to boo: Vila is a bit thick for a second successive week. Opening the shuttle doors was stupid. Forgetting the corridor number could have been fatal to Blake. Staying alive definitely seems too complicated for Vila this week (to paraphase Avon from “Blake”).
Recognisable Face / Hair: Tom Chadbon (Grant) was Duggan in the classic Doctor Who serial “City Of Death”, which was filmed around six months after this. He was also in an episode of Out Of The Unknown, in which his moustache definitely looked ginger, but don’t tell Paula I said that, or she’ll chase me around the Maximum Power convention with a Welsh Street Sign. Chadbon was also in Casino Royale for 18 seconds or something like that and in various episodes of “Casualty” for a bit longer. He appeared naked in something in the 70s, but you’ll have to ask Paula about that one!
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Best exchange: “VILA: “Allow me. You see - the old magic's still there.” AVON: “The old ego, too.”

Blake's 7 will return in… Carry On Being Stupid

Grant: So you've both seen that Out Of The Unknown episode. Did my hair and moustache look ginger in that?
Avon: Demonstrably.
Jenna: Yes, I agree with Avon. Grant, when you did your slug balancing, the slug did look ginger.
Paula: HE'S NOT GINGER!

You are correct, TT- Tom did appear in Casino Royale for 18 seconds as the stockbroker. I can time it so when it is on I can tune in and see his bits and then tune out. As for Tom appearing naked in something, that was in 1970 in a stage play called Inside Out, a prison drama and he did indeed appear naked in one scene. I have an 8x10 of it- as it was on the cover of a magazine! I had no idea it was him at first until weeks later, I took another look online at the photo and realized it was indeed Tom in the all together. I was able to get a copy of the magazine- I'd scan it and show it to you but we'd have to do a bit of a cover-up as this is a family site. Perhaps a big Federation logo? Anyway, you can look forward to me chasing TT around the Steventon town hall with my Welsh Street Sign again, to the amusement of the others fans. They expect it, right? *grin*

Can we have this Welsh chase on film for those of us who did not see the 1st chase? And, Paula, just how big would the Federation logo have to be to cover Mr Chadbon's...extremity? SmileWinkShockGrin

I keep hearing about Ginger Grant in this episode, but I've yet to spot her. Maybe she's hiding in the shuttle?

Yep, there she is.

I just want to say this right now: this episode probably has Jenna at her best-looking (same dress appeared in Pressure Point, I seem to recall - and a black version appears in Gambit), although I still prefer her Redemption/Hostage attire (you can tell they really went for the fan service in this season).

Alas due to another scheduling conflict, I will be in another meeting Tuesday so I will not be partaking of the re-watch.

I'm thinking of inserting Rumours as an additional rewatch on Wednesday night, as a tribute to Paul Darrow, if anyone is interested. He was simply brilliant in that episode.

I can't make the tribute rewatch but I can make this
GARETH THOMAS: Paul is a very generous man, as a human being and as an actor. The programme couldn’t have been made if we hadn’t got on. Our working relationship was magic.

Meegat, in many ways, it's a two-part tribute, so I'm glad you can make the first part!

Countdown is already a strong Paul episode, so I left it where it was, and then added Rumours, in which Paul is truly, truly exceptional.

I might not make tonight’s rewatch on time- I’ve had to go out- but I’ll try and join when I can. And I’ll definitely be around tomorrow.

sweevo
I MIGHT be able to make it, depending on what time I make it back from my parents' house.

My meeting was cancelled...so my choice now is plumbing in the new washing machine or watching B7.

My thanks go to Rachel Riley (steady!) from Countdown, who has helped me with this week's puzzle. All will be revealed during tonight's rewatch.
