41st Anniversary Rewatch - A10 Breakdown
trevor travis
The episode: Albert Ten – Breakdown (Carry On Space Doctor)
The date: Tuesday, March 12th, 2019
The time: 7.45pm UK time

In which David Jackson was promised a starring role only for a rewrite to leave Gan unconscious for most of the episode with just 9 lines of dialogue (I think Supreme Commander has copies of the original draft script of “The Invaders” if you come across her at a convention – I’m sure that’s where I got my copy); Avon considers leaving the Libby crew (SPOILERS: Don’t panic Avon ladies – he doesn’t); and the brilliant Julian Glover appears as the eponymous Space Doctor.

Episode in a word: Limiter.
Character to cheer: Renor, for actually noticing the ladies on the Liberator are rather attractive.
Character to boo: Kayn, for trying to delay the operation to nice, cuddly Gan. Mind you, nice cuddly Gan turns out to be rather nasty while his limiter is malfunctioning. Well, I hope that’s the case, and that’s not Gan’s real ‘unlimited’ personality.
Recognisable Face: Julian Glover (Kayn) was Scaroth The Jagaroth in perhaps the greatest Doctor Who serial of all-time, City Of Death (some ginger bloke was also in that story). He was also in The Empire Strikes Back, where he got the wrong side of Darth Vader.
Is Soolin looking lovely this week?: Yes.
Best exchange: AVON: “Blake, in the unlikely event that we survive this... I'm finished. Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.” BLAKE: “Now, you're just being modest.”

Blake's 7 will return in... Carry On Space Pirates.

Did that hurt? Good. That's for making fun of my wife's nipples.

For the uninitiated, Julian Glover is married to Isla Blair, who was Sinofar in Duel, two episodes ago.

VILA: What is it?
JENNA: A big red whirly thing in space.
BLAKE: Oh no, that's worse than a black hole. It means we've drifted into another sci-fi show.
HOLLY: Hi dudes, how's it hanging? Wait a mo, where's Dave and Arnold gone?

The final episode of City of Death, featuring said allegedly ginger bloke, drew the most viewers of any Doctor Who ep ever (including the new series).
Allegedly ginger coincidence? I think not.

If I remember rightly, the episode in question contains the most important punch delivered by a ginger bloke in history. Wink

(Paula will have completely forgotten this by June.... won't she??? Shock )

That's why he's a baddie in every movie - too many people noticing those nipples, gotta get them all. Wink

If believing that lets you sleep peacefully at night, hold on to that belief.

That's one of them. The one TT is referring to seems to be the punch he delivers on Scaroth's jaw on the primeval Earth so Scaroth could not destroy the time line and the proto-Earthlings swimming in the probiotic 'soup'. Tom lands a good one on the evil Scaroth, aka Julian Glover aka Dr. Kayn! Of course, my favorite pseudo punch is when he breaks the door window to the French cafe to get into it and then instead of opening the wine bottle as any ordinary human would do, breaks the neck on the table and pours Romana a drink, where she immediately picks out a fragment of glass bottle! Priceless. And so Duggan/Grant!

Funny thing about that video clip. Tom is hitting Kerensky, the scientist. Brad and I tagged along with Kevin Jon Davies to the premiere of the new Thunderbirds videos a few years ago in London. After being introduced to the director, producers, art directors and various others of the cast, and seeing original Thunderbirds props and puppets too, we met old pal Nick Briggs, who promptly asked us why we hadn't been thrown out yet! The magic words for the evening were 'We're here with Kevin", which seemed to work a treat. Anyway, in schmoozing with all these industry types, we were introduced to David Graham, the actor who voiced many of the characters in not only Thunderbirds, but Stingray and Fireball XL5- and to our extreme excitement- he played the scientist in City of Death. Luckily for us, the film was delayed because of sound issues for over an hour so we had ample opportunity to speak with David. I got to ask all about City of Death and he got to ask all about America, where he had worked briefly. It was one of those amazing nights we'll never forget, and we never did get chucked out of the place! Never got dinner that evening as promised either but we didn't complain!

BradPaula - wonderful story, amazing night indeed!
And "City of Death" is brilliant through and through, and Tom is brilliant in it! Loved the scientist too.

Interesting - "The Orville" (highly recommend it by the way) did a homage to City of Death in its first episode, there was a similar device with a similar scientist guy.Smile

Gan's reaction when he found out that Jenna was not joining in tonight's rewatch.

Make sure you do join in, or alternatively hide if a big chap knocks on your door!

Hugbot, TT - Wink Thank you for the laughs!

Speaking of laughs, how about the end of Breakdown? First Blake chides Avon for joking about the end of his bolthole (Avon didn't joke though), then he goes to have a good laugh about it with the rest of the crew, behind Avon's back. Cool

Anyway, good evening everyone! I'm watching from home but with garage door repairs going in the background, so I might be on and off to talk to the workers.
