40th Anniversary Rewatch - D9 Sand
trevor travis
The episode: Derek Nine - Sand (Carry On Loving)
The date: Tuesday, November 20th, 2018
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Starring Paul Darrow, Michael Keating, Steven Pacey, Josette Simon, Glynis Barber, Peter Tuddenham and Peter Tuddenham as Avon's 7, plus the late, great Jacqueline Pearce as Servie, that chap from Howard's Way, that chap from Waiting For God and Shada, and Prell, after a demotion following the theft of the Cipher Machine.

In which the crew go to the seaside on Virn, only to find that Servie has had exactly the same idea; Dayna is kissed not by a Hugbot, but rather by a bullet; Tarrant's taste in women moves on from a whiny assassin to a psychopath, albeit the most sexy psychopath in the galaxy; Soolin is looking lovely; and in a twist, the scientist of the week is dead well before the episode has even started.

Sadly I shall be MIA for part if not all of the rewatch. It was the only time this wek I could get my snow tyres fitted. I don't want to leave it much longer (final date 15th December)since we already have 5 inches of whit sh...stuff on the ground and no signs of a thaw.
I used to be such a sweet sweet thing
Till they got a hold of me.

If everything goes as planned I'll kick off my Thanksgiving break by watching "Sand" in the comfort of my own home after half-day at work.

Wonderful episode which grew on me on rewatches in a similar way to "Sarcophagus".

I wasn't sure about Servalan and Tarrant on my first watch as I'd rather see Avon and Servalan going for it, but that's what Tanith Lee had to say about it (I recommend reading the whole interview: https://www.scorp...-INTERVIEW)

Plenty of fans have asked me over the years why I didnít pair Servalan with Avon. But the answer is fairly clear, isnít it? Avon had already shared the Ďleadí role in Sarcophagus. I wanted to expand the role of someone I hadnít written for yet. Tarrant seemed the obvious choice Ė Servalanís intensity against this much more easy-going man, who of them all seemed capable of genuine kindness, compassion, humanity. Plus I did feel rather that putting Avon and Servalan together might pose awful problems for anyone coming in on the scripts that followed. Aside from reducing the local galaxy to ash.

Makes sense, plus there's another thing. "Aliens made them do it" trope is much more in character for Tarrant, while Avon would be all like "Make me die, there's nothing else you can make me do". Wink

Aliens would need reverse psychology for that, as in "We absolutely forbid you to mate with each other or else!" and then Avon would be like "Oh really? Just you watch us". Wink So yeah, "Sand" works much better with Tarrant.

Blimey, is it Thanksgiving already? Eek!

That interview with Tanith Lee is excellent. Scorpio Attack, IRL Jonathan Helm, is also behind the highly recommended Twitter @MakingBlakes7 - do check it out, you don't need to have a Twitter account to look at it.

I like your comments, Mrs U. - very plausible.
