40th Anniversary Rewatch - C8 Rumours Of Death
trevor travis
The episode: Colin Eight - Rumours Of Death (Carry On Revolting)
The date: Tuesday, August 21st, 2018
The time: 7.45pm UK time

Starring Paul Darrow, Jan Chappell, Michael Keating, Steven Pacey, Josette Simon, Peter Tuddenham and Peter Tuddenham as Avon's 7, plus Jacqueline Pearce as Servie, Lorna Heilbron, Bercol and a dead squirrel.

In which Avon needs a razor, while his quest for revenge goes a little wrong when it turns out his 'dead girlfriend' is far from it; Servie ends up chained up in her own dungeon; and some days are better than others, Section Leader.

I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this, Killing myself, to die upon a kiss.
Othello, Act V scene ii

(I'd been waiting for this one).

Yes! Where did they get the late Mr Squirrel?

Oh yes! So fitting.

As for drinking game: it's an interesting one. The whole episode is basically one gigantic Avon's mistake under stress. I.e. his whole plan to avenge Anna was a mistake.

But an interesting part is that Avon is aware of it, he knows he's not rational, and he relies on people around him to help him through: a question of trust again.
He is betrayed by Anna but he instinctively relies on his crew, does what they tell him and he even does what Servalan tells him - which saves him in the end.

He even brings Vila a souvenir Frown

This episode was what made me a rabid fan, but it also traumatized me so that I was afraid to rewatch it. Wink But rewatch has completely changed my opinion: I no longer see this episode as super-tragic and depressing - not like Terminal, Orbit or Blake.
I see it as hopeful, for Avon as well. Because he sheds the false idol and (temporarily) gets the real thing instead. And comes back from the land of the dead.

Also, shipper alert for the next one. Smile

Haven't taken part in one of these for a while. Looking forward to it.

This is my all time favourite episode of B7.
It was quite an emotional ride the first time in 1980, then the BBC repeat just before series 4...and then at Space City 1985.
A room full of like minded fans all watching it on the big screen. I can't describe the atmosphere...there were tears though...
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

Ahh littlesue, I wish I was there to share it like that... It's an emotional rollercoaster.
It's also absolutely brilliant, there's so much in there, I'm glad I can rewatch it now without being reduced to a wreck - so that I can find new things to appreciate. Smile

Sarcophagus is my favourite from Series 3 but Rumours isn't far behind. I just love how tense it gets towards the end and I firmly believe Paul Darrow's performance in it is his best as Avon.

I couldn't get into this episode at all in 1980 or 1981. Probably because of my age. Nothing for kids to latch onto, in this one.

It was still amongst the episodes I bought first in unedited from, once I saved up enough of my university grant in 1992. I bought Volume 17 because of Rumours and Volume 13 because of Star One. Neither episode disappointed.

It's now a strong contender for what I consider the best episode, although I think Blake may just shade it.

Watching it originally, I could never understand why they didn't kill Servalan there and then

I remember watching this at an SFB in one of the video rooms (back in the day) It was late at night and there were basically a room full of emotional women watching it whilst trying to keep it together!!

I'll pay attention this time to who saw her and when. But from memory: both Anna and Avon wanted information from her first, Tarrant respected Avon's wish as he didn't care either way, Cally would never kill unarmed helpless prisoner and Dayna never got to the cellar.
And after Avon got information he wanted he was in shock and ready to die by her hand instead of thinking of killing her.

Maybe so. I would get that now but as a teenager it all seemed b & w.

Hi Everybody!

Rumours isn't my favourite episode (that would be 'City' for this Vila fan) but I think it may be the best. Script, writing and direction are all superb, and I agree with ScorpioSurvivor (and others) who rate this as Paul Darrow at his best.

Evening all! Oops

Finally managed to take part in a rewatch again .... and this time with reinforcements. As the former Mrs Hugbot has already seen Countdown, I invited her around for the continuation ... watching this happy tale of Avon being reunited with his love ...
