May 2018 Ficlet Challenge
purplecleric
To the Egyptians, the constellation Taurus was a sacred bull associated with the renewal of life in spring. When the spring equinox entered Taurus, the constellation would become covered by the Sun in the western sky as spring began. This "sacrifice" led to the renewal of the land.

The word prompt for this month is … SACRIFICE

For the second challenge, write a ficlet centered around Cygnus Alpha. It could be before our heroes arrive, after they’ve gone or perhaps Blake and Co. got left behind?

The real challenge may be to write a ficlet NOT combining both prompts!

SACRIFICIAL LAMB

“Are you sure?”, Blake asked Carnell. “Surely that would make them less trusting of me, not more?”

“It’s the way that Avon’s mind works. Otherwise, he will throw you off the ship in the next six months.”

“Well, you’re the puppeteer.” He saw the expression on Carnell’s face. “Sorry, psychostrategist.”

“Indeed I am.”

***

“Where's Gan?”, asked Vila.

“Gan's dead”, replied Blake.

***

In the rubble, a badly injured Gan was slowly bleeding to death. If only someone had tied a tourniquet around his leg, to stem the flow of blood.

But Blake had abandoned him.

***

“You’ve done well, Carnell. I take it Blake will be completely undermined from this point onwards?”

“Entirely, Ma’am. His guilt will cloud his judgement. He’s a spent force.”

Ellen, it's inspired by last night's rewatch, where it's very clear than Gan isn't actually dead... yet.

Prisoners shuffled out of the holding pen into the darkness that permeated Cygnus Alpha. Several hooded figures appeared in the gloom as if by magic.

One strode forward. “Greetings, brothers and sisters, and welcome to Cygnus Alpha. Please follow us to the temple. Do not stray. If you have not yet begun to feel ill, you soon will. This planet carries a plague, and we have the cure.”

There was some mumbling among the new arrivals, but they followed the hooded figures in relative silence to a large Gothic structure. Once inside they were led to a central chamber with a stone altar flanked by a large sculpture.

The hooded figure spoke. “We are all here because in our previous lives we were criminals, undesirables, or worse. The past does not matter, it is to the future we look. Here we have forged a society. You will join that society or you will die.”

The hooded figure moved to the altar. “When my great great grandfather first arrived here, this colony was in chaos. He united us, gave us purpose. All are welcome here, but if you choose not to join us, you will die.”

One of the new arrivals hesitantly stepped forward. “Of the plague you mentioned. I’m already feeling unwell.”

The hooded figure raised a hand. “No, brother, the symptoms you feel are of a transitory physical nature. The ‘plague’ of Cygnus Alpha is a simple virus that clears itself in a few days. This was part of the chaos that my great great grandfather helped put to rest. When I say you will die if you do not join us, I refer not to physical death, but spiritual death. The plague I speak of is spiritual death, the cure, everlasting life.”

The hooded figure continued. “My great great grandfather came here and fought for the truth, to depose his predecessors who used the plague to control the colony for their own selfish ends. In this great battle, he fell and was left behind for dead. But by the will of his god, he rose from the dead. He wondered why he would be sent back from the dead only to be left here, and came to realize it was his god’s will that he transform this place into a place of peace and brotherhood, as his god intended. In the fullness of time he passed away, and was taken into the heavens to live forever with his god in Liberation.”

“If you join us, and abide by our tenets, then you too shall know eternal life and live forever with our god in Liberation. My great great grandfather’s name was Arco, and by that name you shall call me.”

The hooded figure gestured to the large statue behind the altar. “And this is our redeemer, our Liberator, our deity. Behold! Your god, Blake!”

There had been a young man, of course, although there had been little opportunity to do more than touch, briefly and apparently by accident and share a glance or two of brazen interest, quickly veiled. She had hoped this was a prelude to much more. When the lot was cast and her name pulled from the cup, she knew it was over.

They had risked everything to snatch a kiss before the elders came for her, a kiss that she tasted on her lips for many days after her incarceration. She had little else to sustain her: scriptural texts, a natural spring providing water for drinking and washing, food concentrates, bedding and robes. It was a dark place, this cell where she spent her days - some daylight filtered in from narrow slits cut high in the cave walls, and she had candles which she lit sparingly but she got used to the shadows and it was warm inside.

Alone in the quiet, she read her scriptures and dreamed. She did not allow herself to think of the life she’d suffer if He did not come or the life she might have had if she had not been chosen. She knew the sickness might claim her people before the next drawing of lots, leaving no-one to replace her, but she stifled her fears. She focussed instead on the moment when God might appear. Would be be old? Impatient with her youth? No. She envisaged the young man whom she had favoured and fashioned God in his image, enhancing his beauty. Dark hair, silky white skin, eyes that devoured. Her God would raise her gently as she knelt before Him and find her worthy. She trembled as she felt the kiss He would imprint on her lips, the touch of His hand and the darkness of the cave hid her flush of excitement.

And her faith was rewarded. He came and all was as had been prophesied. Her worship was acceptable to Him and He granted the Deliverance her people sought. When, as He must, He returned to the stars, she tried briefly to rejoin her family but found there was little point. Her former admirer was bonded and she had nothing in common with those she had known before. They praised what they termed, “her sacrifice.” It amused and irritated her. What sacrifice had she made? She had waited for God; He had come and saved her race and her reward would be to join Him when she died. She remained in her cell, waiting again, patiently, for that death.

It did not come easily. The sickness was merciless and ravaged her body.

Whether she was right and she and God were reunited, no one can say, but she endured the pain of dying, alone and without complaint, and smiled when she knew the end had come.

'I've no statement to make, simply a proposition,' Blake said. 'Keep me. Take me back to the Federation when you leave Horizon. Let the others go. Otherwise, Liberator will stay out there. And when you try to get away in your slow freighter, it will destroy you.'

The Kommissar considered. He knew enough about the Liberator's capabilities to recognize that the threat was real. Besides, bringing Blake back to Earth was enough of an achievement, and would surely grant him a reward and promotion. He decided to accept Blake's offer.

*

'Avon, are you quite clear about my instructions?' Blake's voice echoed over the Liberator's comm link.

'I am.'

'Leave the Horizon's orbit. Make sure you get beyond the reach of the freighter's long-range scanners. In two time units, bring the Liberator back to Horizon and bring up Jenna, Cally, Vila and Gan from these same coordinates.'

'I said I understood the instructions, Blake. Avon out.'

Blake nodded grimly. He took off his bracelet and allowed the Federation troopers to cuff his hands and escort him to the freighter.

*

I said I understood them, Avon repeated to himself. I never said that I would follow them.

*

On a clearing close to Ro's palace, four members of Blake's crew looked up at the clear night sky, from which the Liberator's white shape had long since disappeared.

'Avon didn't need much convincing to skedaddle, did he?' Vila commented bitterly. 'I wonder if the bastard's planning to come back for us at all.'

Jenna shot him a dirty look. Normally, her pragmatic concerns would have been the same as Vila's; but this time, all she could think of was how Blake had sacrificed himself for them.

'You are mistaken, Vila,' Cally said, touching her temple lightly with her fingers. 'In fact, Avon is still here.'

'How can he be?' Gan asked. 'The Liberator was visible from the planet's surface, and now we can no longer see it.'

'I don't understand it either,' Cally said. 'But I sense Avon's presence.'

At that moment, there was a strange shimmer of light and the Liberator re-appeared above the Horizon.

'You were right!' Gan murmured in astonishment. 'But how did he do it?'

'There's only one explanation,' Jenna said. 'Avon must have been working secretly on some kind of a detector shield. He activated it to cloak the Liberator. And right now, he has de-activated it so he can fire neutron blasters.' She inhaled anxiously, looking at the freighter whose trajectory had already brought it too close to the Liberator to avoid attack. 'I hope he got detailed instructions from Orac on how to cripple that freighter. If he pulls it off, he'll be able to teleport across and save Blake.'

'I knew it!' Vila exclaimed.

'No, you didn't,' Cally said.

'No, I didn't,' Vila admitted. 'But I should have guessed it, really. Avon would never allow Blake to sacrifice himself. The thought of a martyred Blake would've just bugged him too much.'

And so as The Revels Saga inexorably begins to reach its finale, our blonde gunslinger finally gets to meet her mysterious man...a blond ex-mercenary!!

The Adventures of Soolin;
Part 8 Act 1
A Sacrifice Too Far?

“It seems that your reputation gets around,” Deva smiled.
“Not another disgruntled customer?” Jenna asked.
“Oh no, not disgruntled, and not a customer. She won’t give me her name, just wants to speak to the ex mercenary who has, of late, been conveying cargo of confections.”
Del Grant frowned, “She?”
Deva pointed across the other side of the bar, “That young blonde woman. Something about following a line of infinity and being led here.”
“A line of what?”
“I’ll explain it later.”
“Who is she?” Jenna enquired.
“She wouldn’t say. I told her that I’d see if you were available.”
“Thank you Deva.” Grant tried to get a better look, “Well here goes nothing. Wait here Jenna, I’ve been meaning to have a word with you.”
“A word,” Jenna mused as he walked away and took the long way round the room, “I wonder what that's about?”
“More to the point,” Deva murmured, scratching his cheek, “What is SHE all about?”
i.imgur.com/l0e4ZjK.jpg

“Hello,” Grant said, “I believe you’re looking for me.”
He was greeted by a pair of startling blue eyes, “That depends.”
“On what?”
“I’ve been told that the man I need to speak to is a onetime mercenary turned cargo hauler for a variety of confectioners.”
“Not anymore…it’s safer being a mercenary. At least you know who is out to get you…and it’s not your cargo.” Grant could still feel the pain where the Cadbury’s Crème egg had hit him. “So, what is it you want to know?”
“About these,” she drew an empty Family Packet of Revels from her pocket.
“What about them?”
“Where do you get them from?”
“Why do you need to know?”
“I have a friend who is rather partial, and another friend who I really need to make amends to. I didn’t realise that the Revels he had stowed away were his, until it was too late and my first friend had eaten them.”
“What? Even the coffee ones?”
She nodded.
Grant marvelled at that, “I’m afraid your friend will have to find something else. Production has stopped. Enough money has been made and besides, the Federation have come up with something else to keep control…”
“The pacification drug?”
“…How did you know? Anyway, I’ve decided to cut and run.”
“That’s very noble of you. So you cannot help me?”
“No, the production facility has closed, I’m sorry.”
“Where was this production facility?”
“Trade secret; sorry.”
“Still, I have a colleague who is working on an antidote to that pacification drug…”
“And this colleague couldn’t come himself? To this place? You must be the sacrificial lamb…so to speak.”
“No one sacrifices me…and lives, I assure you.”
“Who is he; this colleague of yours?”
“Trade secret, sorry.”
“I didn’t get your name?”
She favoured him with a brilliant smile, “I didn’t give it.”
“Who was that?” Deva asked, joining Grant as he watched the young woman sashay off.
“No idea, but I envy the man that she’s going back to.”

To be continued.....

The Adventures of Soolin:
Part 8 Act 2
The Ultimate Sacrifice

Jenna had watched the conversation and was intrigued by what she had just seen.
“Well, who is she?”
Deva shrugged, “No idea, but one of the men at the bar said she reminded him of a young girl who had a reputation for being the fastest gun hand anyone had ever seen. You crossed her at your peril.”
“What did you want to talk to me about?” Jenna asked, noticing that Grant still seemed to have the young blonde woman in his thoughts.
“Oh…about us.”
“Well,” Deva interrupted, realising that he was maybe imposing himself on a private conversation, “I’d better get back. The Federation observer is due to visit soon and Blake wants to get things just right.”
“Maybe he could have hired that young lady, if she is as good with the gun as everyone seems to think so,” Grant said.
“Now that would be interesting especially as he’s coming up with more outrageous tests…”
“Not still doing that is he?” Grant said in disbelief, “Surely you could run computer programmes?”
“I’ve told him that…frequently. I’ll see you back at base, Jenna.”
Grant and Jenna watched as Deva made his way through the noisy throng that filled the uninspiring bar.
“So Del? What is it you want to talk to me about?”
“About Blake…about us. One of these days he going to get you killed.”
“I know what I’m doing…”
“One day, you won’t outrun the blockade…”
“He needs those weapons.”
“I know…and that’s where I think I’ve come up with a plan. You fly that next consignment in and make it your last.”
“Blake won’t like that…”
“Maybe not, but he will see it as the ultimate sacrifice.”
“Sacrifice?”
“It’s time to think about your future…our future. You put your ship on automatics...if they surround you, we press self destruct from the safety of my ship and you take half a squadron of gunships with you. As I said, Blake will think that you’ve made the ultimate sacrifice and then you and I can get far away from him, from the Federation…we can spend the rest of our lives together.”
“I’ll have to think about it…”
“You’ve got from now until we reach the docking area…”
“Tell me Del, what was that packet she showed you?”
“Oh Revels…the Family Pack.”
“Revels?” Jenna stopped dead, “Avon locked away his share of the Revels that Blake and he stole. Do you think she’s with Avon?”
Grant was thoughtful for a moment, “I hope not; for his sake. He won’t stand a chance!!”

Cor this is well exciting Sue. Can’t wait for the next instalment. It’s quite an achievement to have made a story about chocolates as riveting as the original series on which it’s based. Love Lurena’s art work too.

Thank you Anniew...personally, I blame PC for setting the prompt of 'Choice' many moons ago!
We are now nearing the end...but it turns out all right, this time. The finale may take some reading as I try to tie up all the ends what with Soolin, Carnell, Servie, Vila and Avon (plus Blake, Tarrant and Dayna,of course).

Loving the story, Littlesue, and of course the illustration from Lurena. Funny- that's the scenario both Brad and I subscribe to- that Jenna and Grant end up together -with or without the Revels... And 'Grant could still feel the pain from where the Cadbury Creme egg had hit him...' had me laughing out loud at that one!

Great stories all! Clever writing and very entertaining!

@ Paula, as you can imagine, I had so much fun drawing Del Grant and Soolin. Yes, Grant should be with Jenna, a perfect match!

And now I will post a story of which I don't know if it is the truth, but I like to think it to be. Anyway, I like the teaming up Vila and Avon.
With many thanks to Littlesue her beta read and corrections. (I still think in my native tongue)

Cygnus Alpha?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh come on, don’t be modest Vila, you know that I’m not stupid…”
“What?” Vila didn’t look up from the device he and Avon had decided to apply to the treasure hold’s door lock as an additional safeguard.
“Just tell me, from where did you gather your knowledge about electronics? I think I know.”
Vila tried hard not to break his concentration. “Of course you do… as always…”
Then he turned his face towards his smart companion, “Now look Avon, it’s no concern of yours and spying on me is not fair. Give me that clamp please.”
Avon placed the requested tool in the outstretched hand, “Fairness and trust are not in our vocabulary, are they? Don’t you think that it is rather strange that a Delta Grade has an obvious extended command of programming language for locks? So…just where were you educated?”
“It came to me naturally. Now hold this electrode pad, will you?”
“That’s not a sufficient answer. Let’s see… Cygnus Alpha, does that ring a bell?”
Vila tried hard to avoid Avon’s eyes. “Penal colony planet,” he blurted out, “We have that in common, at least… The electrode pad please…”
Avon watched as Vila started to put the sensor into place, “Not the planet, the school.”
The electrode pad hit the floor with a soft thud. “How do you know?”
Avon picked the sensor up, smiling, “Simple deduction: your obvious skills must have been taught at the secret Alpha Grade Rehabilitation School for those Alpha Grade juvenile delinquents who have finished serving their sentence. That education is supposed to lead to a proper employment position within the Federation’s facilities. The school is nick named Cygnus Alpha to mirror the fate of the adult criminals.”
He paused and took a deep breath, “You’re an Alpha Grade!”
i.imgur.com/uRqt1Mb.jpg
Vila shrugged, “That is what you say... So you attended the Cygnus Alpha School too, for your greedy behaviour?”
“I told you that I’m not stupid! No, but as a student my professor asked me to work on a few programmes some of which, I discovered, were ordered by the Cygnus Alpha Rehabilitation Institute. This training course was carefully kept secret; otherwise the truth could have been somewhat embarrassing to all concerned.”
“Isn’t that ironic…” Vila murmured, as he carefully connected the sensor to the lock device.
Avon started the system check with his hand held computer. His eyes narrowed. ”Well now,” he began, “ I think we can get along with each other as we have up until now and I promise not to tell the others.”
“Why?”
Avon nodded at his computer. He gave Vila a charming smile, “Because it will come in…useful. Your obtuse Delta Grade could be to our advantage with a certain sense when times get rough.”
Vila removed the electrode pad, “What sense? Of humour, as always?”
The lock clicked into place.
“No,” Avon replied, “Survival.”
