Story for Zen
Inquisitor
With the Liberator chronicles giving a spotlight to various characters, does anyone else think that Big Finish should do give Zen a story focusing on him, maybe after the Liberator blew up a copy of Zens memory banks survived and someone finds it

Interesting idea, but doesn't really appeal to me; BFP are quite derivative enough already imo!
Reversing the polarity of the neutron flow. I bet that means something. It sounds great.

There's an 'Early Years' Zen story by B7 Media, that's not bad at all. It even explains how and why the Liberator was abandoned by its crew. Can't remember what it was called - might have been 'Escape Velocity'.

'Escape Velocity' is indeed the story. It's based on a well-used SF idea, but it's done well enough. It remains for me an AU type tale however; that's not 'our' Zen. (In terms of the story, not the actor, I hasten to add; Alistair Lock is a good Zen.)

I have to agree with SD about BF, though I don't think it's always a bad thing if it's handled right, and depending on how wholesale it is.

Inquisitor, I remember reading a "Starblazer" digest as a schoolboy (decades ago now!) where the pilot(?) was able to pull the "personality matrix module" out of the control panel of his damaged spaceship and thus rescue it. As soon as I read that I thought that is what they should have been able to do with Zen. Later I thought perhaps Zen could have transferred his/its personality into Orac for storage, which would not only save Zen but even allow for some kind of split personality shenanigans fanfic with Orac. I never used the idea but have seen similar thoughts suggested by others.

Another idea was that the autorepair would eventually rebuild the remains of Liberator over Terminal, meaning Zen would be back. It wouldn't be the Zen of course, merely a completely identical one.

This is really strange, Joe. I was thinking today how any new follow on series of B7 could get the Libby back and I thought that maybe a piece or two could somehow 'regenerate', using the autorepair, into a new ship and a new group could find her and take on Blake's mantle. I don't know how Mr Nation intended to carry on the story, other than having Avon, or possible even Vila, survive that ambush.
But, yes, a ship like the Libby, could, I think, be a viable idea.

Great minds and all that, Sue!

It was one of those silly pasing comments I made in one of my LOCs in an old Horizon n/l but I've seen it floated (ahem!) since by other people on line, so we're not the only ones to have thought of it.

It only occured to me as I was typing this morning, though, that if separate pieces of large debris could rebuild themselves like that, you could come back to find several DSVs rather than just one! (And, imagining it used on TV or audio, it would also be a good reason to explain why all the new Zens sound slightly different.)

They could always go back to the System and steal another one. Orac would know the coordinates.

In the audio adventure "The Magnificient 4" it is stated that the System is still about and still in power after Blake and co left

It's been done several times in B7 fic so far....

Birth is always hard. Fear was the first reaction when enzymes began to eat the shell that had been protection for so long. As new sensations blossomed in its mind, it spoke strangely to its frightened symbiotes. Maximum power commanded to the engines tipped the scales. Zen hatched into starlight.

In Gambit.06 was: Irene Stubbs' "Regency"
Zen/Liberator reassembles above Terminal, it rescues Cally who, after 1year, is still on Terminal in a trance - "prolonged nutrient lack"...

To shorter & longer ones at Hermit Library:

Alicia Ann Fox: "Children of the System"
As Zen dies, each bit will grow & seek its own Rebel crew...

Marian Mendez:
"Symbiosis" : Zen reforms & rescues all from Gauda Prime
http://www.hermit...mp;ST=0223

"Mutualism" : infant DSVs, Zen + Zen-babies rescue Rebels fr Servalan on Gauda Prime...
http://www.hermit...mp;ST=0219

My favorite has got to be "Conscience of the Queen" where Zen's consciousness (so to speak) leaps from the exploding Liberator into the mind of a nearby human... a very *unexpected* nearby human...
Brilliant idea, & brilliantly written :)

I think Zen can be re-created by the data stored in Orac.
As the Liberator is a kind of organic entity it could be rebuild by the knowledge of it's genetic pattern.

Orac was able to connect to the System's computers and I imagine Orac's hunger for knowledge and its itch for investigation must have provided it with a mass of information we have no idea about! (very probably Avon would suspect that and I have lots of thoughts about it )

What was the name of the short story by Nico(le Mody) where Zen allows Vila to help hatch out a baby DSV?

I remember that competition, and reading this when Calle posted it. "Zen hatched into starlight" - beautiful.

2003? Blimey, I suppose it must've been!

I did a story once many moons ago about zen and the liberator slowly regenerating in the aftermath of terminal, cells growing and quickening from stellar radiation. I think I phrased it in the story as photosynthesising freedom! Used it as a means to rescue Avon from Gauda prime as the Liberator tracks him down and teleports him in the nick of time. Avons line is - what took you so long,Zen?

I think that within minutes (seconds) of the closing credits back on 21st Dec 1981, people were putting their thoughts and ideas down on paper!
So it is interesting to read how other people have come up with a solution to restoring the Libby.
One wonders if Mr Nation had considered the possibility.
All these stories to read. stretching back over 35 plus years......I was looking to reading them once I had retired!! Then the Government moved the goalposts. Now I have to wait another 6 years!!! Thankfully, quite a lot of these stories have been saved for future B7 fans.Grin
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.

You're too kind Maestro Dredd. I'm forgetful; forgot that Nicola Mody's B7 fic has its own index (since she's so prolific) in my B7 fic notes, separate from my main author index. Thanks for the remind!

Yes, a story about Zen would be good - Escape Velocity was excellent, but having the Liberator resurrected would be perfect.

Thought the same as many other respondents over the years, that Liberator could well have self repaired - it was an organic system after all, and that can be seen in how it defended itself when the System took control.

And the auto repair could in time have rebuilt the ship - that's one thing I did like about the re-imagining, in that Liberator was shown to be far more organic.
