Blakes 7 In Character
MrEModels
Hey folks.
If you listen to podcasts, i thought maybe you might like to listen to this new one Ian and I have put together. Out fortnightly, Blakes 7 In Character will each episode take a look at a guest character, an element or idea from the show. They're proving to be a lot of fun to do as we ramble on and hope you enjoy them too Grin
Available from iTunes, or direct from here:

And, we have a Facebook page set up, so why not pop by and let us know what you think of the subjects we've chosen!

How do you adjust the volume on these podcasts? It was too loud on my pc anyway.

MrEModels
Hmmmm... That's not a question i've been asked before. They're compiled at a standard output level, and sound okay to me through my headphones on my iPod. Will look into it.

Forgot to say - the show is also available on iTunes, and there's a Facebook page set up for discussion on the various characters featured. Why not pop on by and contribute?

Well am aving a go at this - not done listening to #1 yet; #2 is lined up after it. #1 is not bad so far.

A question: in podcast#1 you say this is Dev Tarrant's first spoken line:
TARRANT: [Steps up to him(Bran Foster)] What do you think?

But isn't Dev Tarrant heard speaking earlier than that, in the background, when Bran Foster is speaking to Blake in the foreground?

TARRANT: [Enters and speaks to Ravella and Richie in the background] I had trouble getting out of the city, the route was crowded. For a while there I thought we'd been infiltrated.
FOSTER: Dev Tarrant's here. Dev! [Beckons him over] You remember Roj Blake.
TARRANT: Oh, yes. We met before. [They shake hands]

Speaking as one Rebel (entering late) to another, Dev Tarrant's first line is ... innocuous. But since we know he's REALLY Federation Security who HAS infiltrated Bran Foster Rebel group, it's almost very-black-humour clever scriptwriting, innit?

Got a listener! Hurrah! Its not just me and Ian after all! Many thanks for giving it a go - i'm really pleased with how the show is evolving and we're really enjoying doing each recording Grin
Please stay with it - can't wait for the mammoth Episode 3 to be released!
Yup, you're right, i TOTALLY missed dev's very first line - ooops Smile

I want to say that I really enjoy your podcast and thanks so much for doing it!

Regarding ep 2, I was glad to hear someone who sees the potential use of imipac. It seems that most people just think it's pretty feeble. My read was that there is no identifier for an individual, it just affects all people marked. Thus servalan couldn't hold the controller and use it without killing herself.

MrEModels
It sure works better that way, but its negated by what we see in the show - Servalan kills the guard, but Travis, Blake, Avon and Gan don't drop down too. Cheers for the kind comments on the podcast! Ian and I are having such fun doing them, and i feel each one is better than the last. A week today, Bayban the Burcher is released - can't wait! Grin

Finished Ep 1, it was pretty good. I didn't agree with all your opinions/discussion, but it was still interesting to hear.

Now on Ep2 (in bursts when find a spot to switch it back on). It's quite enjoyable! I like your discussion of the character dynamics between the pairs of characters - Coser & Rashel, Servalan & Travis (wasn't there a 3rd pair you mentioned? I forget!).

There was some question abaout the industrial-looking locale where Coser & Rashel were walking after their ship blew up, to the "abandoned settlement" - FYI, that part was at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), near Didcot. I've been there & sort of recognized it, maybe! But there's been a lot of changes at RAL too over the years.

Thank you for going to the time+trouble to make & edit these discussions, to put them up for us Blake's 7 fans to download & hear!

re: Blake: You say: "He's a one-idea character. Gareth Thomas plays it really well; but there's no meat there for him to work on, is there. He tries to put in little character bits ... the main hero character is a bit of a blank sheet by the end of it all. You don't really know anything more about him by Star One that you did in The Way Back."

HMMMM

It must be true that you're leaving out the very much changed Blake who appeared in Episode 52 "Blake", as he was very obviously different from his former self?...

But even just thinking of Blake from 01.TheWayBack to 26.StarOne I really don't know if I agree with that!....

BTW re: Rashel's comment that "a disobedient slave can be modified" = turned into a Mutoid: you describe a Mutoid as "a robot creature", and "cannon fodder as a Mutoid".

Travis said mutoids have a high level of bionic rebuild. Therefore, it's reasonable to assume they're stronger than normal humans, and better able to withstand extremes of temperature. Also that they can also be programmed to some extent. After all, their memories can be wiped and loyalties instilled.
So it's very likely that mutoids are expensive to create, but very useful.

Expensive, but worth it, for the best candidates; they are more loyal than an unmodified, very efficient, much more adaptive than androids, and more cooperative than (still human-identity) slaves.

Moreover, Mutoids do have ranks since (in 08.Duel) the ex-Kiera Mutoid says, "You are a Federation officer as I am." So they have military rank and therefore respect within the Space Feet hierarchy.

Thus I hesitate to agree that Mutoids are cannon fodder...
Mightn't ordinary troopers be "more expendable" (= Cannon fodder) than (very expensive) Mutoids???

MrEModels
Cheers for the comments - much appreciated!
Re Blake, not knowing more of him at the end than at the start, we didn't mean to infer there was no character development, there was indeed, it was that we didn't get to know much more of his background. We did with Cally and Avon, and we felt it odd that they got it, but the many character didn't.
Re the Mutoids, valid points there, which you'll hear that we echo in Episode 5, which is devoted to them Grin

Ep3: I had to laugh at the mention of Dayna's little exploding car with the cheesy paint job. I found myself wondering... in addition to developing weapons, does she also build model cars in her free time? Perhaps she built up a hot rod model and was painting flames on the side and thought "hey, this looks cool, but how about some lightning bolts?" Angry

MrEModels
Exactly! Presumably, somewhere on the Liberator, she has a workshop. And has stopped at a planet to buy cans of nifty spray paint!
