Well, here goes...based on an idea from Lurena who is still suffering from a bad bout of flu.

River of Memories

“There it is!” enthused Vila, pointing to the sought after relic on the other bank of river, “Last one is a subteron…”
“Vila…don’t,” Avon implored. But it was too late; the other man had jumped into the swirling water and was gleefully making his way across.
“Oh, I forgot,” Dayna smiled, “You don’t enjoy water sports, do you?”
That brief exchange on the shores of the sea on Sarran had come back to haunt Avon.
“No, and I still don’t. We could teleport; it would be both much safer and…”
“Where’s the fun in that?! Vila shouted back, still wading happily through the flowing river.
“Fun?” Avon asked.
“Yes,” Cally replied, “Fun. Or don’t you do ‘fun’ anymore?”
“You don’t understand,” Avon began, but his next comment was halted as Vila let out a terrified scream. From out of nowhere, a whirlpool was bearing down on him.
“That’s not right,” Avon said absently, allowing his eyes to dart along the river bank. His gaze settled on a small building, almost hidden in the side of the bank and he marched off towards it.
“Avon!” Cally shouted. But it was no good; he wasn’t listening.
Dayna couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Without any further bidding she plunged into the by now raging torrent and made for a screaming Vila, who was about to go under; dragged down by the whirlpool.

Avon wasn’t in the mood for niceties.
He blasted the lock of the building and kicked in the door.
Before him was an array of dials, screens and read outs. Very basic; very old, but it still made sense to him. An ancient defence system or perhaps a kind of ‘magic’, to keep the previous occupants of this place in awe of the one who could command the rage of the river.
He reached into an inside pocket and withdraw his inspection tool. He rarely went anywhere without it, not since he’s seen just how useful such a tool had been on the London.
“Now, where is it?...”
He wrenched off a panel and plunged the tool deep inside its innards.

“Help!” Vila screamed, “I’m drowning.”
“Vila, you’re not helping,” shouted Dayna, as she made a last grab for Vila’s boot as the whirlpool sucked him under.
…And then it was gone.
Almost as quickly as it had begun, then it was over. The raging river and its hungry whirlpool were still.
“Oh thank you, Dayna,” Vila smiled, “I may need the kiss of life…”
And she promptly pushed him back under….

“Well?”
“Well what?” Avon replied to Cally’s question.
“You could have gone in…”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Does there have to be a reason?” Avon asked, not looking at her.
“No…”
“Good,” he said, walking past her.
But inside was that revisited fear; of his time at the Academy, where his superior intellect had annoyed some of the class bullies.
They had lured him to the sports complex and waylaid him, before throwing him into the pool and keeping him under for what seemed an eternity.
Until his brother had beaten them off, and saved him….

Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

ONCE UPON A TIME…

A hand was struck against a hip.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”

“Why, it’s you, of course, ducky”, replied the mirror.

A smile.

***

Every day the routine was the same. And every day the reply was the same.

Sometimes, the mirror was challenged.

“Are you telling me the truth, dear mirror? I hate being lied to. If you lied to me, you would have to undergo Federation torture, do you realise that? Don’t think being a mirror can save you from the interrogation table!”

“I cannot lie – it is impossible. You really are the fairest of them all. It’s the leather which does it”, confided the mirror.

***

But, one day, one terrible day, everything changed. His whole life changed.

The same old question: “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”

But then a shock. A MASSIVE shock.

An even bigger shock than when the Federation All-Star XI lost 3-4 to the Cygnus Alpha Convicts in the last World Cup final. Of course, the prisoners had been executed within an hour, and the game never broadcast.

An even bigger shock than when Paula didn’t know how long that Tom Chadbon had been in one of his films, to the nearest second.

An even bigger shock than a re-watch passing without TT commenting on the loveliness of Soolin.

An even bigger shock than when the main guest star survived an episode of Blake’s 7.

Anyway, I’m digressing, and Travisina doesn’t like the 500-word-limit being broken.

So, where were we? Oh yes.

A massive shock…

The mirror was nervous and delayed its reply…

“Well”, the man prompted, “Who is the fairest of them all?”

“Um…”

“Who is it?”

“Well…”

“Come on mirror, give me an answer!”

“It’s Avon! It has to be Avon! He wears leather so well. Even better than yourself!”

“WHAT?”, exploded Travis. He roughly hoisted the mirror off its mount on the wall, raised it above his head and flung it onto the floor, where it smashed into a thousand pieces.

Travis stomped off.

“Talk about Mr Grumpy”, said one fragment of the mirror.

“He is sexy when he’s angry, though”, said another fragment.

“Absolutely”, agreed a third.

“What do you think he’ll do now?”, asked a fourth.

The fifth replied: “Oh, he’ll try to get a huntsman to kill Avon, and then try to poison him with an apple. He’ll disguise it by trying to kill Blake at the same time.”

“And what about when that fails?”, said Six.

It was Seven who supplied the answer. “Oh, then he’ll get really desperate, have a head swap operation, and end up sounding like a cockney.”

THE END (with 40 words to spare!).

Love it, TT. And just for the record Tom Chadbon was in Casino Royale, 2 scenes, a total of 19 seconds... just so you'd know....
Zil: Oneness must resist the Host.

And so our heroine’s quest continues; this time an overheard comment on Freedom City leads the Scorpio Crew to a desert landscape….

The Adventures of Soolin
Part 5

Water, Water Everywhere…

“Are you sure about this?” Tarrant asked.
“Absolutely,” Vila replied.
“But it’s just a desert…” Dayna said, slowly turning round. The sand stretched to the distant horizon.
“Which is why it makes the perfect rendezvous. They meet here knowing that there is no-one else around for miles.”
“And you overheard someone mention this on Freedom City?” Soolin queried.
“Yes, when I went up to the bar to get a drink of… water.”
Dayna smiled, “Obviously the… water makes people talk out loud on Freedom City.”
“This was the last pick up,” Vila continued, “I heard one of the men say that your friend, that mysterious former mercenary, had come here, picked up the last load and said that he was finally done with the whole business…something about the cargo exploding all over him.”
“He is not my friend,” Soolin corrected.
“Did they say his name?” Tarrant enquired.
“No…there was a great uproar when Dayna put my chip on that number…”
“…and it came up!” Dayna smiled.
“How unfortunate,” Soolin sighed.
“Unfortunate for Freedom City,” Vila agreed,” But it least it helped you with that Carnell chap.”
“Yes it did.”
“What exactly were you two talking about?”
“A business proposition…”Soolin stopped, “What’s that? Over in the sand?”
Dayna went to investigate, while Tarrant found a small indentation in the sand. He cleared it away.
Beneath the sand was an impression in the earth; an impression made by the landing gear of a ship.
“Well, something was here, and not long ago.” His fingers dug down into the earth; it was damp. But then he stopped as his finger touched something. More digging until finally, he uncovered the mysterious object.
“Well, I’ll be…it’s a packet of Opal Fruits.”
“So he was here,” Soolin murmured.
“No,” Vila interrupted, “You mean Starburst…”
“Look what it says…Opal Fruits; Made to make your mouth water…”
“Hm…they must have gone back to the old name,” Vila concluded.
“So whoever my man was meeting obviously got a bit thirsty,” Soolin suggested, “And in this climate, who can blame him.”
Dayna came back from her search in the sand, with two familiar items; an empty Family Pack of Revels and a Bounty Bar wrapper.
“They came in search of Paradise…”
“…And found this inhospitable place,” Soolin said, “Come on, we’ve wasted enough time. Let’s get back to base, before Avon gets even more suspicious…”
The Scorpio soared into the air, leaving the sand dusted planet in its wake, but from somewhere beneath the hollow in the ground, so helpfully scooped out by Tarrant, came a strange gurgling noise, as the water, for so long kept buried beneath a hostile surface surged upwards and into the light.
The small spring became a torrent and as night fell, dormant life awoke from a deep sleep.
The sun rose the next morning to find a green carpet splashed across the arid surface. Slowly, a beautiful red flower unfurled its petals and welcomed the new dawn.

WATER IS LIFE

Water is life.
It makes the trees grow.
It washes away the disease.
It quenches our thirst.
It drives the turbine, which provides our light and electricity, which keeps us warm.
Without water, the Planet Earth would have remained a lifeless rock.

She finished her soliloquy, and looked down to her prisoner. He was tied securely to the bench and cloth covered his face. He wasn’t talking. She suspected he was sulking.

“Of course, water has other uses as well, doesn’t it, Blake? It doesn’t have any spikes or needles or knives, but it is the perfect instrument of torture.”

Still nothing from him. She adjusted the strap on her elegant dress, placed a hand gently on his shoulder, and crouched so that she was talking directly into his cloth-covered ear.

“I love the simplicity of this technique. I suspect you know how it works, but before we commence, I’ll explain it to you.

“I simply pour water over the cloth covering your face, in particular over your breathing passages. It causes you to experience the sensation of drowning.

“Normally, the water is poured intermittently, to prevent death during torture. However, if the water is poured uninterruptedly, it will lead to death by asphyxia with the sensation of drowning, also called dry-drowning.

“Besides death, this technique can cause extreme pain, damage to lungs, brain damage from oxygen deprivation, other physical injuries including broken bones due to you struggling against your restraints as the water makes you gag, and lasting psychological damage.

“I fear that I sometimes get a little carried away, it’s a personal failing of mine, I’m afraid. This is your last chance to talk before I begin. Tell me the location of your new base, Blake.”

No response. Perfect. She’d had been disappointed if she’d have been deprived of her fun at this late stage.

She turned on the tap and smiled.

Crumbs...TT, that was just so chilling. I seem to recall a similar scene in a Man From Uncle Novel. Poor old Solo was on the receiving end that time.

Lurena has been very ill with the flu these last couple of weeks or so, but is slowly getting over it. But that has not dulled her drawing hand!
