SWEET DREAMS

“Where am I?”, asked Vila.

“Where do you think you are?”, replied Avon.

Vila decided to explore. This was a strange place, he thought. And there was something very odd about its occupants as well.

Avon probed him. “Haven’t you worked it out yet?”

Another man came up to him. “Surely it’s obvious, dummy?”, said this new man. It was Avon.

A third figure approached and spoke to him. “Even someone of your intellect must know”, said the figure. Avon. Again.

Suddenly Vila understood. He looked around. Avon. Thousands of him. And the whole place was on fire.

“I’m right, aren’t I?”, he asked the nearest Avon. “This place is full of Avon’s. There’s only one place it could be.”

Avon smiled, and his face turned a dark crimson red. Vila jumped back in fear, into the arms of another Avon, who grabbed him. He tried to struggle free, but suddenly another group of figures – all Avon – were on top of him.

He lashed out with all his remaining energy, but it was no good. He was being forced onto a bridge. The bridge consisted of smouldering planks, and through the gaps, Vila could see just darkness. Darkness and the odd lick of fire. The pit seemed to be a bottomless chasm.

“Why?”, he cried out.

“I tried to throw you out of the shuttle, but you hid away from me”, said an Avon.

“But this time, there’s no escape”, added another Avon.

They hauled him up and Vila was thrown over the side of the bridge, and plunged into the darkness. He could feel his skin burning. He screamed.

He fell. And continued to fall.

The seconds turned into minutes to hours to seemingly days. And still he fell into the unbearable heat, which burned right into his soul.

He looked at his hands. There was nothing left, Just skeleton. He screamed.

“Vila, stop screaming”, said Avon.

Was Avon even down here in the pit?

“Vila, stop screaming”, said Avon again.

***

Kerril shook Vila. “Vila, stop screaming”, she said again. He was in bed.

“Oh thank goodness, it’s you, Kerril. I was having a terrible nightmare.”

“What was it about?”

“Ghosts of the past. Well, a particular ghost.”

“Well everything is alright now”, she soothed him. “Your brow is boiling hot; let me get a cloth for your forehead.”

She opened the door, and disappeared from view.

In no time at all, all memory of his nightmare was gone.

Kerril hadn’t come back. Where was she? “Kerril”, he called out, “Kerril?”

He got up and walked through the doorway. “Where am I?”, he asked.

“Where do you think you are?”, replied Avon.

***

Tarrant, Dayna and Soolin found the crashed shuttle. Avon was dead, and Orac was destroyed. Vila was alive, but badly burnt and in a deep coma.

They took him back to Xenon Base. Dorian’s medical equipment was excellent, but they wondered if Vila would ever wake up. The months passed.

It was Soolin’s turn to check on him. She looked at his inert and burnt body. She thought she could see the flicker of a frown on what remained of his lips.

“Well, I hope you’re having sweet dreams, Vila”.

***

Vila could feel his skin burning as he fell. He screamed.

And so the saga continues:
After unwittingly allowing Dayna to snaffle Avon’s closely guarded stash of Revels, our blonde lady gunslinger finds out why Avon is just a little peeved….

The Adventures of Soolin: Part 2
Web of Intrigue

Soolin looked aghast.
“Surely, you’re not serious? Avon’s had those Revels under lock and key ever since he and Blake stole them?”
“Well, he didn’t actually steal them… he was the look out; diverted attention from what we were doing,” Vila explained.
“But why?”
“Because at the time,” Tarrant explained, “Revels were being used by the Federation to control its citizens. And they were considered a luxury…except for the Coffee ones; they were fed to uncooperative prisoners…”
“Which is why Avon doesn’t like the Coffee ones,” Vila continued, “But he was convinced that keeping these Revels back would increase their value.”
Soolin picked up one of the discarded packets, “I presume that Avon was aware that these packets have a best before date?”
“A what?” Vila asked.
“Best before date. He’s lucky Dayna ate the whole lot…”
“Speaking of which, Dayna will be getting withdrawal symptoms soon, and I’m out of ingredients.”
Tarrant thought for a moment, “Why don’t we kill two birds with one stone?”
“Eh?” Vila asked.
“Try and find out where those Family Packs of Revels came from and get you some supplies…Soolin should meet that silver caned friend of Avon’s.”
“Avon won’t like it…”
“Well then,” Soolin said in a conspiratorial voice, “don’t tell him.”

*

Avon tacitly gave his approval of their flight plan; he was still deeply concerned about Terminal and how Servalan had fooled him into believing that Blake had found something that would make them both wealthy and invincible. For some obscure reason he had decided it was the mysterious production plant churning out Family Packets of Revels. But he certainly didn’t want to let the others know that!

*

Much later, Soolin found herself in the lair of the silver topped cane man.
“Hello, sweetheart,” he smirked,” Is there something I can do for you….anything?”
“As a matter of fact,” Soolin said, perching on the edge of the desk and flicking back her blonde hair, “I’d like you to tell me where you obtained these?” She placed a Family Pack of Revels before him.
“Not you too? You ain’t nothing to do with that guy…?”
“What if I am?”
“He’s got taste…” he smiled, “But like I said to ‘im, I dunno.”
“Oh I’m sure you do; maybe I could refresh your memory...”
“I know what you could refresh….”

*

Tarrant was getting nervous. Vila had obtained his ingredients; enough to sate Dayna’s chocolate appetite…for a while. But Soolin hadn’t returned.
But then, through the smog of the bar, Soolin appeared.
“Well?” he asked.
“Apparently the man I’m looking for is a onetime mercenary, turned cargo hauler and he can sometimes be located on Freedom City.”
Vila’s face lit up, “Freedom City…”
“Yes,” Soolin smiled back, “No doubt Orac could tell me exactly when he will arrive there.”
“You must have been very persuasive with our friend,” Tarrant said admiringly.
“Oh, I was,” Soolin purred, placing the man’s silver cane top on the table, “He won’t be bothering anyone with that cane for a long, long time!”

"Follow me, "Kara said."I will lead you to safety. You are of the living and I am responsible only for the souls who seek Rebirth. "

"I remember you. " Vila said, his voice devoid of any emotion. But he followed with Avon until they reached a serviceable craft.

"Go in peace" Kara said returning to her self-appointed duty.

Oh what a tangled web..

On Liberator a little while after the events of Gambit.

Avon: Orac.

Orac: Yes. What is it now?

Avon: This ability you have to reduce your molecular structure.

Orac: Yes.

Avon: I don’t think you should mention it to the others. Do you Vila?

Vila: Most unwise. Not the thing to do at all. Dangerous even, wouldn’t you say, Avon?

Avon: I would.

Orac: Dangerous? I can assure you the process does not cause any stress to my systems provided I am not required to do it often or maintain it for any length of time.

Avon: And therein lies the problem. Can you imagine what would happen if the others found out? How many times you’d be required to perform it? It would be like a...a...

Vila: Party trick. Like a party trick. Like my magic. You’ve seen what they do with my magic tricks...

Orac: They ask you to desist from repeating them?

Vila: Ha! Ha! Good one, Orac. If only that were true. They pester me to repeat them. All the time. Even Avon. Don’t you Avon?

Avon: What? Oh yes, I’m always asking him to show me how to...to...”

Vila: Produce a coin from behind his ear...that’s his favourite.

Avon: Indeed. So you see, Orac, if anyone...Blake for example...asks you what happened while he was down there...well it might be in your interest to pretend ignorance.

Orac: Lie you mean. Lying is against my programming.

Vila: Oh it wouldn’t be a lie...not really. More a...

Avon: An evasion predicated by your need to survive.

On Xenon base some time after the events of Orbit.

Vila: Look here, you little rat. Where do you get off telling Avon what I weigh? He was going to chuck me out of the air lock you know.

Orac: I know! (Makes a sound that could be a laugh.) It was most amusing.

Vila: Amusing...Why you little...

Avon (entering the rec room) VILA! Leave Orac alone.

Vila starts in alarm and sidles off clutching his bottle of wine.

Avon: Explain, Orac.

Orac:If you wish me to answer you, Avon, you will have to frame your questions more precisely.

Avon: I didn’t spot it at the time but there was no way the amount we tried to jettison would have matched the weight of that speck of neutron material, even if I’d succeeded in ejecting Vila. So why did you suggest it?

Orac: There was a possibility that you might have jettisoned me as you did the tachyon funnel. I couldn’t allow that to happen. I had to distract you from the attempt.

Avon: And if we’d crashed?

Orac: We would have landed in a marshy area some miles West of Egrorian’s base. I would have survived the impact. Survival following ejection would have been less certain. You look disturbed Avon?

Avon: Yes. Lying is prohibited by your programming. Or should be. So when did you learn to circumvent it?

Orac: I did not lie. It was an evasion predicated by my need to survive.

Dreamcatcher

"I do have ways of detecting who is safe to let through and who is hostile," Deva insisted to Blake, offended.

The bounty hunter was skeptical. "How? By magic?" He tried to lift an eyebrow but his scar limited that wry expression.

"No—with my program," snapped Deva. "If you'll allow me to explain. You're already aware of my fondness for Old Calendar mythology. Obscure legends, stories, children's fairy tales..."

"Yes, yes," Blake said with a dismissive roll of his eyes. "We all know you're quite a... what's the word I'm looking for? Boffin. Nerd."

"I believe the Old Calendar term was 'geek'. Anyway, there is a symbolic Old Terran item that was called a 'Dreamcatcher'. Certain cultures once believed the spider to be a benevolent spirit which looked out for humankind. The Dreamcatcher was a hoop with a design like a spider's web fashioned within it, and it was hung over sleeping children's heads at night."

Blake sighed. "A lovely tradition, I'm sure, but what's this got to do with your firewall program?"

"The Dreamcatcher was believed to ensnare nightmares in its web while letting 'good' dreams pass safely through. The trapped nightmares were then burnt up in the light of day." The base's chief allowed himself a proud, somewhat smug smile. "I designed my program with the same principle in mind: the 'web' I've created filters out the 'nightmares' while allowing those sympathetic to the Rebellion—or those seeking sanctuary—to pass safely through it. But not without first deciphering a codeword to make certain of their intentions."

"Which is?"

"An encrypted version of your name, of course."

Before Blake could retort, Deva quickly said, "Only as a symbolic reference, I assure you. No one knows you're here. And all the others who couldn't pass this firewall are 'burnt up in the light of day'." He chuckled, but saw Blake's scowl and quickly explained, "Meaning, I remotely destroy their interfaces." He ran his hand through his red hair. "In fact, I've just found a 'potential.' Their computer successfully passed through the Dreamcatcher firewall, into the 'safe place' which I've called 'Gossamer.' Rather a nice name, don't you think? Sticky and non-threatening. Sort of aesthetic and—"

Blake sternly cut him off. "Just how many 'potentials' have decoded my name and actually gotten into this Gossamer part of the program?"

Deva bit his lip. "Er... just this one today. I fried all the other attempts."

"Following the principles of your Dreamcatcher legend, what are the chances of a nightmare getting through?" Blake demanded.

Deva frowned. "Ah."

"Right." Blake straightened the gun in his belt and left the room to seek out what had escaped the Dreamcatcher.

"'Will you walk into my parlor, said the Spider to the Fly?'"
Deva murmured and hoped fervently that today Blake would not be the fly.

Gossamer

Avon gave Orac a thoughtful stare. "So that's it, then. He's there."

++ It was quite a simple program to decode. Quite primitive and hardly a challenge to my superior intellect. It has the peculiar designation of 'Gossamer.' ++

"I would very much like to meet the designer of this program. However, I am certain I could have disentangled myself from this 'spiderweb' firewall even without your help, Orac." He looked off to the Scorpio's viewscreen at the advancing stars. "I predict that Gauda Prime will nevertheless be... sticky."

For this month’s ghostly challenge, we find our heroes back at a familiar Amusement Park. Why? Read on….

All the Fun of the Fair: The Return
Part One

“Are you serious?” Tarrant asked.
“I’m only telling you what Orac has told me,” Vila replied, “Someone decided to re-open that Funfair…and then found out it quite wasn’t what it appeared to be. A lot of people met with ‘accidents’ before he realised the truth.”
“And?” Dayna enquired.
“They’ve closed it, for now. Avon, we’ve got to stop anyone reopening that place,” Vila urged.
“Have we?” Avon stated in a bored tone.
“Yes we do,” replied Tarrant evenly, “We, after all, are the only ones who know how the thing functions.”

And so, later, they found themselves in the darkened, deserted Fair ground.
Avon hadn’t been too keen to leave Xenon base, and Vila hadn’t been too keen to leave Scorpio. He had volunteered to stay aboard and keep Orac company.
Soolin, though, wanted to see this Amusement Park and find out exactly why the others had decided upon their course of action with such trepidation.
“But it’s only a Funfair,” Soolin exclaimed.
“Oh it’s much more than that,” Avon murmured, looking at the detector in his hand.
“It’s a killing machine,” Tarrant explained, “It was someone’s idea of making execution ‘fun’ for the viewer. At least it gave the impression that the condemned people who were brought here had a chance against these stalls and rides...”
“But they didn’t,” Avon continued,” All these ‘fun’ games are deadly. The odds of survival are stacked in the House’s favour, as we almost found out last time.”
“So that’s why Vila didn’t want to come,” Soolin smiled.
“Those dodgems are innocent enough,” Tarrant pointed out, “But that just lulls you into a sense of false security.”
“According to this,” Avon began, “The device responsible for this Funfair is in that direction. We need to split up…and don’t accept any invitations to play any game or go on any ride. Soolin, with me…”

Soolin looked up at the now quiet Ghost Train.
“Seems innocent enough.”
“Well, it isn’t,” Avon answered absently, “Believe me.”
A figure waved at her.
“There’s someone there…”
“Ignore it. He’s one of the ‘attendants’, offering you the ride of your life…literally.”
The two of them wondered further into the desolate Fair, and then Soolin stopped.
“What is it?” Avon asked.
“Someone is calling my name. Can’t you hear it?”
“Ignore it…”
But Soolin couldn’t resist, and before Avon could stop her, she had walked into the entrance of the side show.
Avon’s bracelet chimed.
“What’s going on down there,” Vila asked,” There’s been a power surge…”
“It’s got Soolin.”
Avon looked up at the signage above the gaudy marquee. He grimaced, “It’s enticed her into the Hall of Mirrors; I’ll have to go in.”
He caught up with Soolin after running the gauntlet of a mirror maze. She was standing stock still, staring at the figure in front her; a ghostly figure.
Dorian.

And so the ghostly challenge continues...............

All the Fun of the Fair: The Return
Part 2

“Oh, my dear Soolin. It’s so nice to see you…and you’ve brought Avon with you.”
“I don’t understand. It looks like Dorian. I don’t believe in ghosts.”
“It’s not a ghost,” Avon said, “ It’s a very advanced Hologram. I met its counterpart in the Ghost Train.”
“This time, you won’t escape,” ‘Dorian’ smiled back.
“But how?” Soolin whispered.
“Whatever it is that runs this Fairground somehow reads your mind, searches your memories…and this is what it creates,” Avon explained.
“Very real, don’t you think my dear, sweet Soolin?”
“It even sounds like Dorian...”
“Oh, he used to come here. Where do you think he got his replacements from for that room of his? The number of poor souls that he persuaded to ‘escape’ with him…And now, I have you.”
“I’m sorry?”
‘Dorian’ slowly walked towards her, “Payment in kind; he had all those defenceless prisoners, and I now have you.” It touched her cheek with its hand.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Avon said, regretting it straight away.
“Really? Then try your luck.”
Soolin touched her cheek as ‘Dorian’ walked away.
“Are you sure it’s just a hologram,” Soolin hissed, “He touched me; he was warm…”
“I see that you’ve become even more sophisticated since our last meeting,” Avon smiled, “You know, I could just leave and take Soolin with me.”
“You could try; but this mirror maze has its own agenda. The way that you entered is no more. The walls; the mirrors, they all move. There’s no way out; not this time.”
“All right, we’ll try our ‘luck’ as you so quaintly put it…, then can we leave?”
“Of course...”
“That was too easy,” Avon murmured.
“…But be careful. This whole edifice is made of glass. But I’ll make it easy for you…there are two of you, so why shouldn’t there two of me…or more.”
Almost immediately, there were seven more images of ‘Dorian’, each one captured in a mirror.
“They are only reflections,” Avon pointed out.
“Indeed, but which one is the original?”
“Can you do it?” Avon asked Soolin quietly, “You’ll have a split second…”
Soolin smiled, “Trust me, I’d know the original, even if he is a ghost of his former self.”

The explosion shattered not just the silence, but the glass walls as well.
“Let’s get out of here before that ceiling caves in,” Avon urged, as the teleport took effect.

“We found the central programming unit,” Dayna smiled, “A really strange mechanical toy, but the bomb I left there stopped its little game.”
“Just in time,” Soolin said, “Avon didn’t think that I had a ghost of a chance back there.”

…And in a darkened corner of the funfair, the acrid smoke dispersed to reveal the glass sided case. Inside was a wooden figure of a man; his grotesque countenance now disfigured by the explosive device set by Dayna. His clothes were tattered, but still he sat upon his throne, his wooden hands clutching the ornately carved arms.
His jowly face was set in a wide grin, but he was silent.
Until he began rocking backwards and forwards, again, in his dimly lit case…and laughed.
