Anniew: that was brilliant, beautifully written and very much like a fairy tale with its magic, violence and moral at the end. And stone is such a wonderful symbol for Avon.

Rainesz
Joe Dredd: A great, contrasting two-parter. One bleak and terrifying, the second ridiculous. And both so real true to life in very different ways.

Well, it's like this...Joe D started it and then Travisina ...since then I've had a certain Danny Kaye song running round my head ...one of my faves from Junior Choice back in the day...
So here goes. Alas no picture from Lurena as yet as her comp has crashed and she is rebuilding it...
This little story comes with thanks to Danny Kaye..............

The Space Commander’s New Clothes

Travis was not happy.
Here he was all dressed in black leather…and no-one paid him much heed.
Something had to be done.
He asked around and someone mentioned a company called Hodson and Co…at least that is what it sounded like.
So Travis called them and explained his plight.
“Certainly, sir, we can assist. We shall be round shortly.”
And so Travis found himself in the company of two tailors who claimed to be the best in the entire Galaxy.
“I want something befitting my position as Space Commander; something that will prove attractive to…well, never mind to whom, but one of Blake’s colleagues seems to get all the attention and he wears leather.”
“Leather. Sir?”
“Yes, leather, really nice and soft to touch, leather. Not this sort as per Federation policy.”
“I think we can help," the second tailor said, “We have the most unusual leather there is. Nice and soft to touch and so beautiful…well, those of low intelligence just can’t see it. Leave it with us…”
“Low intelligence?....”
“Only those possessed of a great mind can see this incredible material. Just wait and see!!”

So Travis did wait and see, watching as the two men set about cutting the material, sewing it and machining it.
At least they appeared to be doing so…still, Travis didn’t want anyone to think him stupid, so he let them continue.
The two tailors frequently huddled together and then did more sewing and machining until finally…it was done.
“Come sir; please try on this beautiful outfit.”
Travis was a bit apprehensive as there didn’t seem to be anything there. But he didn’t want anyone to think that he was of low intelligence.
“Well sir?”
“It’s beautiful. Look at the cut, look at the shape, look at the colour. Call the Guards, they must see it…”
And so the Guards came.
“Oh marvellous. Look at the cut, the shape, the colour,” they all said in unison, not wishing anyone to think them idiots.
So emboldened was Travis that he asked for the Council to come and the High Council did and said, “Look at the cut, the shape, the colour.”
And so on.
Everyone admired him, and then Travis decided that he had to show Supreme Commander Servalan the outfit.
She will be livid when she sees me, he thought.
And so Servalan was called…but she did not know about the marvellous material, and that those of low intelligence were not able to see it.
She stood in front of Travis as he turned this way and that.
“Look at the cut,” he began, “This will give that Avon a run for his money.”
“Travis,” Servalan said, “if anyone has had a run for their money it’s the two tailors.”
“Hodson and co?”
“HODSON?! The message said HUDSON and Co. Travis you are in the altogether, as naked as the day you were born!”
“What, but look at the leather!”
“Travis, the only leather you are wearing is that eye patch…besides,” Servalan said, raising an elegant eyebrow, “It’s altogether far too chilly a morn!!”

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

So children, let me begin…

Once upon a time there was a group of rebels. Nasty rebels.

They never washed. They never brushed their teeth. They were smelly.

The leader of this band of rebels was called Blake. He was a particularly smelly man. He had potatoes growing under his finger-nails. He had dried bogies under his nose.

Blake liked one thing. He liked destroying things and blowing them up.

He blew up schools, while the children were still inside. He blew up old folks homes, full of lovely grannies. He even blew up sweet shops!

One day Blake decided that he wanted to blow up my house. He didn’t like me.

But I outsmarted him. I gave him the wrong address. On the computer network, I switched my address to the one where Kasabi, Avalon and Sarkoff all lived. When Avon, Blake’s best friend, hacked into the computer, that was the address he found.

So Blake was in the basement and he planted all the bombs. He then went to teleport back up to his ship.

But again, I had been too clever for him. I scrambled the signal, and his teleport and communicator failed.

He started shouting at his communicator on his wrist, but it was no good. He was blown into a thousand pieces by his own bomb.

The house was completely destroyed, with Kasabi, Avalon and Sarkoff all inside upstairs. The rebellion was over – good had triumphed over evil.

Blake’s head survived intact, and several children came along and dug it out of the ground and kicked it around like a football. They had to wear clothes pegs over their noses, because Blake was smelly even when he was dead.

And that, my lovely children, is how I, the good Queen Servalan, saved the schools, old folks homes and sweet shops, and how everyone in the Federation – my Federation – lived happily ever after.

JENNA STANNIS AND THE SEVEN VERTICALLY-CHALLENGED PERSONS

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”

The wicked Queen Servalan was a bit miffed when the mirror showed her Jenna Stannis.

But the solution was simple enough. She’d simply get her huntsman, Travis, to kill Jenna.

However, there was soon a complication. Jenna allied herself with the seven dwarves.

There was the leader, Grumpy, who kitted himself out in green wellies. He was always shouting at the other dwarves. And bullying and manipulating them. Jenna still fancied him, although he hardly ever even acknowledged her presence.

And then were the others. Sleepy had a habit of stealing things – your watch if you weren’t careful. Talking of sleep, you had to do it with one eye open when Sneaky was around. He was forever trying to gain control of the group from Grumpy. Jenna was very wary of Sneaky, even if he could be a charmer at times.

Doc was smart, for a miniature flashing box with lights. Roundy was a strange one – he just perched on the wall all day.

Hippy didn’t eat meat and she kept odd animals for pets. Bashful was huge for a dwarf – he ate LOTS of meat. Bashful rarely spoke.

As usual, Huntsman Travis bungled his plan, although poor Bashful was killed. The wicked Queen Servalan had to deal with Jenna herself, tricking her to eat a poisoned apple. Jenna slumped into a near-death coma.

However, it turned out that Grumpy was actually a Prince and all he had to do was to kiss Jenna to bring her back to life.

Jenna never awoke.

Until they occupied Dorian’s base on Xenon, trees had not played any major part in Avon’s life. Dome born and bred, he knew them only through grainy illustrations in the forbidden books that his father hoarded, so he was completely unprepared for the sweeping majesty and mystery of them when he encountered them during his scouting expeditions.

He found himself making excuses to spend time in the forest, claiming to be looking for rare minerals or to checking for predators, both animal and humanoid. In reality he would spend hours sitting with his back to their nobbly bark, sometimes even heaving himself up onto a high branch and enjoying a view of the sky. In such moments he briefly knew a peace rarer than he had ever known.

And the colours they displayed. The pale, gentle green of their first leafings, the slashing yellow, blue and emerald of their summer plumage, their later maroons, reds and golds. His mind was saturated with their hues.

Among the trees, he knew that his best, most creative impulses held sway and the compulsions to cruelty, suspicion, revenge that plagued him were lulled to a torpor. And yet, even in his contented moments there, the lure of the basement still tugged at the edges of his thoughts. It was a kind of sickness he knew, bred out of the years of struggle, out of the need to quash all sentiment if he hoped to survive. The basement represented the dark heart of mankind, a darkness he shared and always it called him back from the calm trees to plot and plan and throw his challenge in the teeth of those that had wronged him.

So when Orac informed him that Blake had been seen on Obsidian, he knew that his decision was already made.

But before they left the base, he returned to the forest and sat there for an hour. He watched each leaf detach itself from the safety of its branch and felt the exhilaration of its fall.
Just because I can't sing doesn't mean I won't.

Beautiful, Anniew. Such lovely descriptions. You wish Avon had chosen to stay with the serene trees rather than go look for Blake.

And this story could easily cross over to the Cally Junior tale, showing why he feels so comfortable near the trees with the children. Wink

Trevor Travis: two excellent stories. The Servalan viewpoint was hilarious and I was waiting for someone to do a Seven Vertically-Challenged parody! The names of the dwarves, LOL... Grin

And now for my little effort. No piccie as yet as Lurena is still rebuilding her computer...

The Revels Saga continues.
The Liberator has gone; blown to pieces when Servalan, the arch Nemesis of Avon, engaged Maximum Power.
Now Avon must face the fact that his obsession with the packets of Revels has led to his downfall. The idea planted in his mind that Blake had discovered the lost Production plant of Mars Inc and was ready to start making money for Blake and Avon, has proved to be an illusion.
And so the scene is set for a new challenge…
…Someone IS making Family Packs of Revels.
With Avon in freefall, it behests someone to take over and finally find the answer.
And so we begin…
The Adventures of Soolin:
Part 1

All Fall Down…

The single occupant of the Wanderer Class Planet Hopper Scorpio scanned the immediate area and was worried.
This debris field; what could be the cause?
“Excuse me, Master, I don’t wish to impose…”
Dorian sighed, “Yes Slave, what is it?”
“Sensors have detected two metal containers on the starboard bow.”
“Metal containers? Life capsules?”
“I fear I cannot tell, but they are relatively small compared to the normal sized life capsules.”
Dorian considered that news, “Let’s bring them aboard…”
“But there is no indication as to what they contain…”
“We can wait until we return to Xenon. Right now we have a more important concern; the crew of the Liberator.”
“I fear that this debris field IS the Liberator.”
Dorian shuddered. If that were true then what was the fate of the crew?
It didn’t bear thinking about.

Deep within Xenon base Avon stared into his empty glass.
He found it preferable than staring into the accusing eyes of his associates.
These last few days had proved almost unbearable.
Everything that he had held dear had began to fall, just like the old game of Dominoes that Blake has often used to illustrate how his actions would ultimately lead to the fall of the Federation.
For Avon, though, it wasn’t the Federation that had fallen; no, it was him.
First, the loss of the Liberator, then Cally’s death; the fight with Gunsar and Pella’s onslaught. But there was something else, lurking behind the headache that he had.
The Revels.
They had been his backup plan in case Blake’s Cause came to naught, and now even they had gone. If only this empty glass was full…………….
“Avon.”
It was Tarrant.
“There’s something I think you should see…”
“Can’t it wait? I’ve seen enough of this base…”
“It’s not the base.”
This time it was Vila.
“Where then?” Avon asked in a bored tone.
“The Scorpio,” both men replied.

“Well it seems our late friend, Dorian was salvaging after all,” Tarrant began.
Avon wasn’t amused, “So?”
The Scorpio’s cargo bay door opened…to reveal Dayna and Soolin happily sitting on one metal box and extracting the contents from the other.
Avon’s Revels!
Avon was livid.
“Get away from those; they are mine!!”
Suddenly a deathly hush descended.
Slowly, Soolin got to her feet.
“Actually, I think you will find that these boxes and their contents are, were …Dorian’s!”
Avon studied her.
“Dorian salvaged these boxes,” she continued, unswayed by Avon’s dark look, “and now I am his sole heir; the beneficiary of everything he owned…by right of inheritance…mores the pity.”
“You don’t understand…”
“No, Avon, you don’t understand…..”
Avon made to step forward but was met by a steely eyed glare and the barrel of Soolin’s gun levelled at his head.
“….These Revels are MINE!!!” she said calmly and coolly.
In that instant, Avon suddenly realised that he had finally met his match.
Cold.....you don't know the meaning of cold.
Cold is when you have ice on the INSIDE of the window!!!

THE FINAL ACT

I’ve had better days than this one.

I thought I was going to end up as Lord President.

Instead I’ve been shot by Blake, then shot by Avon, and now I’m falling down into this nuclear reactor.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
