Doctor Who Is Dead

Well the series viewer ratings by which many judge success (not necessarily myself) are sliding.

I would personally welcome a more thought out series without it going completely 'E' space

I found Rey ummm not that great, hard to like a know it all Oops

As for the casting.... It's been a few days now and I still can't seem to get into it. The new show since 2005 has had this tendency to hit me over the head with some of the ideas and themes it wishes to highlight. "Look we've got this!" "Look this person is like this!" "Take that we're progressive!" "We just set this precedent so look out future!"

Another thing for me is Missy, I found her to be kinda crap as an interpretation of that Master. So when the new casting was announced I didn't think they would have the ability to pull it off. New producer you say? Well as someone who wasn't a big fan of the RTD era I was looking forward to Moffatt taking over. The show got worse not better to the point where I just plain quit after the Zygon stuff. I don't think I wanna be fooled again, I wish Chibnall all the best.

So hard they didn't try replacing him for years!

Just gone done watching all his episodes with Double T in the rewatches. He was just stellar.

He was indeed. Brilliant actor! I wanted him to kill the Doctor and become the star of the show Grin

Not really. ALL viewing audiences have been decimated in recent years. Therefore, the truest comparison is chart position.

No Doctor Who episode since 2005 has finished outside the top thirty. It's true that the stellar chart positions of the later Tennant episodes hasn't been repeated, but they are still very healthy indeed.

Consider this: during the last nine seasons of the original run (Seasons 18 to 26), EVERY single episode was outside the top thirty.

So, actually, the Calpaldi episodes still did very well.

The 2016 DW Christmas special was the highest rated show in the history of BBC America. Ratings on this side of the pond have been steady, though the current season fell back slightly.

DW is the highest grossing export show for the BBC. Ratings in Britain are one thing, but they only tell part of the financial success of DW world wide.

Personally I'm not so happy. That's because in the last season there seemed to be kind of forced themes about racism, sexual orientation and other current political correctness.
Hence the decision for a female Doctor seems forced to me too and feels like a "must" instead of a surprise.
As a fan of advanced age I hang a bit on tradition and had hoped for an eccentric, male Doctor with interests that differ from our human interests.
To be honest: I lost my interest in DW in the last series.

This all does not mean that I would not want to give the female Doctor a chance; perhaps she can surprise us.

I may have done as well, had it not been for the force of nature that is Peter Capaldi.

Peter Capaldy was certainly not the cause; he's fabulous! But I started to feel sorry for him and for the Doctor once the Gallifreyan feel got out of the series... If you know what I mean. Oh I guess you do!

@Angry Angel:

Thanks Rainesz! Here's a nice article by Una McCormack about the casting: https://theconver...-who-81116

Thank you for the link! I somehow missed this post from Una this week. Grin

**-snippage-**.

Mmmm not too sure on the accuracy of that as I am talking relatively , like for like compared to previous years.. Therefore I feel my statement has some validity. Its not been a dramatic drop true and the Xmas specials do ok, but else do people do after Xmas dinner, opened their prezzies and chill?... whack on the telly and or play a game of cards or similar! And contemplate what new innovative ways to make meals with the leftover turkey! Grin

Personally I don't hold much to ratings especially with chart positions because the 'competition' will vary and statistics are more complicated now and in the way they are counted. I was more speculating on the reasoning of the decision. But from what I read and hear it seems to be have been a done deal no matter what. So it does smell a little of a 'stitch up' with our current situation and it may be a contributory factor in someone's mind.

With what's splashed across the tabloids this morning, it's much clearer on the timing of the BBC's announcement. Doctor Who is being used as a political football. I doubt that Chibnall was even given a choice.

No interest now. So no Romana ? Romana spin off?

Sigh I'm done

Big Finish did a Romana spin off with Lalla Ward some years ago

The BBC have just published the salary ranges for their stars. It's a requirement forced on them by changes made to their Charter. Apart from stuff like "radio star gets millions" and "Actor playing nurse gets more than actor playing Doctor", there's also a lot of handwringing about the gender pay gap and the proportion of males vs females.

They must be thrilled to have finally a star of DW they can write about again...Peter is a great guy, but for them, pretty boring. Tabloid is one of the worst thing ever invented....Sad
