Photobucket Woes - 3rd party linking disabled for your account
President Solvite
For about 15 years Photobucket (PB) was my utility to store and share my media on the various forums I frequented. Although in recent years the quality of both service, speed and reliability has declined massively. I have been meaning to make a change but recent events have sped me along to make my move.

This week on the 28th June , PB changed their terms of service and I have found that none of my linked images now work, although the images are still present on their site. Instead you now get an image nagging you to upgrade your account (which will cost you $400 a year to enable the 3rd party hosting/linking facility , I don't think so!)

Looking around I see that IMGUR offer a decent service for FREE!

Also their interface is quick and simple to use without constant nagging (or offensive!) adverts. I also noticed that the BB code is much simpler, making typos and copy and pasting errors less likely!

Just create an account, username, password and supply an email here:

http://imgur.com/

I was up and running, sharing media in moments. If you have any problems setting things up, post here and I'm sure either myself or someone will be able to help.

I'm not tech savvi...does this mean that I will have to copy ALL my albums from photobucket to this new hosting site?
I just tried Space City 1986 on this forum and my piccies came up once I'd put the password in...if that's the case....I may be some time!!!

You do not HAVE to move all your pictures if they are not being hot linked..

You can still provide clickable links to individual images and albums from your photobucket account. It's only if you wish to show your images on third party sites that you may wish to utilise IMGUR as a host. Personally speaking I am a bit off PB at the moment, due to it's slow, buggy and advert ridden interface so I am more than happy to move. But I appreciate moving large volumes of images will be a pain so a gradual migration may be best.

Yes, I had noticed just how slow it was to actually log on with all these ads popping up every five seconds. I think its a good idea to do a gradual migration. But thank you for giving us a heads up about the problem.

There is also the option of sharing some of your B7 pics by hosting them here in Horizon's Photo Gallery !

Click on 'Submit Photo' in the side menu, or HERE. Put in title, description and choose which Album to put them in.

Once it's been accepted, you can use the link to share it on other platforms, eg Facebook.

With regards to uploading to the Horizon gallery here, the file size should be no more than 2MB with a maximum resolution of 1800x1600 pixels.

Re overall storage I would still use IMGUR (with perhaps another backup drive) and use Horizon's gallery for your best shots.

I was uploading many images last night to the IMGUR site and I must say the bulk file uploader worked a treat. I suppose the main challenge will be getting the files 'off' PB unless they are also stored elsewhere.

Of course other bulk file storage services are available like Dropbox and Onedrive with varying levels of service and cost. Smile

I just got the dreaded bad message from Photobucket and was about to post somthing about when I noticed this thread.
I haven't been happy with Photobucket for some time, for the same reasons as mentioned here above.
Thanks for the heads up about an alternative.

But does it mean that I need to replace all the images I posted here on the forum?
For instance the ones in the logic riddles thread?
Or will it be better to delete such a thread and create a new one?

I'm off to take a look at the IMGUR site now...

We are in the process of taking all of our photos off of Photobucket as we find it amazing to say the least that in order to transfer our photos to another third party site we would need to pay $399.00 per year for that privilege. Goodbye Photobucket and hello Tumblr.

Makes me think old Photobucket will go belly up before long...

At the mo I don't seem to be affected by this PB thing as I'm, only 77 percent full...but no doubt they will do the same thing to me.
Now the thing is, a lot of the albums and piccies I've put up on PB over the years were on other comps that have since died. Somewhere, the piccies are on this comp or the portable hard drive.
Question, can I transfer direct from PB to Imgur or can I transfer back to this comp? And then upload to Imgur..
..in other words HELP!!!!

I suspect its only a matter of time littlesue, I am currently only on 2% capacity , mind you I do have 10GB storage there!

Easiest thing is to upload from your local computer / backup drive. Imgur I think permits 50 image uploads per hour (although have managed to push it to 65 and no complaints yet!!)

PB is terrible to download from (i.e.. it is one at a time! Unless someone knows better) So only do it that way if you're desperate and you have no other option.

Reason for edit:
Oops used the dreaded off rather than from... Heck I am abandoning that awful site PB, so maybe I am getting off it, or is that gone off it Pfft

Anyway Imgur is a dream in comparison and Flickr is pretty good too..

I've found the back up for the Convention photos, so that's okay. But I have daughter No 2 coming over on Friday who says she will sort it out! Yay!!

This whole Photobucket thing completely changed the look on my Patreon page. All of a sudden my little illustrations were replaced by these annoying boxes. Thank you so much for the Imgur link, President Solvite. It's quick and easy.

I definitely don't miss Photobucket's gross ads.

Well I've just started the long task of downloading everything off photobucket onto my comp and then next week I'll start uploading to Imgur.
Methinks the folks at Photobucket may well soon realise what a BIG mistake they've made...or they're so arrogant, they just won't care.

I wouldn't want to put money on it.. But even if they do a U-turn I doubt their client base will return.

Many people have spent years on their blogs and sites and even if they reversed their policy IMGUR's interface and performance is so superior to what PB offers
