I'm off my hols (again) at the end of the month, so I'm posting this now in case I forget.......

It’s the Thought That Counts

“I wonder what you are planning now?”
It was an unspoken thought and Avon decided to keep it that way. He was standing almost directly behind Blake; a Blake who hadn’t moved since Avon had entered the Flight Deck.
“No doubt some outrageous scheme; half thought out,” Avon continued to himself, “No doubt I will be the one to get you out of trouble…again.”
It was so inviting. All it would need would be a blow to the back of Blake’s neck. He could blame a sudden lurch, should anyone else ask why Blake was lying dead on the floor.
Except Cally wouldn’t believe it.
She would know.
She never came out openly about it, thank goodness, but she seemed to know his thoughts better than he did, and him taking the opportunity to rid himself of the obstacle between him and freedom, of a sort, would provoke her to anger.
And not just Cally;
Jenna too.
And that was a deadly combination that Avon didn’t feel confident about taking on.
Avon took in a deep breath…
…and still Blake didn’t move.

“I wonder what you are planning now?” Blake thought to himself. He had noted Avon’s almost silent entry onto the Flight Deck.
And he could sense that he was standing directly behind him.
Blake knew that he was, perhaps, a sitting target, but he also sensed that for all his threats Avon wasn’t going to take advantage of the situation.
How many times had Avon come to the rescue when a plan hadn’t come to fruition? Admittedly, he had let everyone know that he alone had been their saviour.
But Blake was prepared to overlook such enthusiasm, because he had become increasingly aware that the one person he could rely on was Avon, for all his bluster to the contrary.

Avon studied the flawed hero in front of him.
Why didn’t he take the opportunity to rid himself, once and for all, of this fanatic who dreamed of power being in the hands of honest men? Once, there would have been no hesitation, but things had changed; he, Avon, had changed. For some reason, he now felt duty bound to protect this deluded man from his own delusions.
Why?

“Blake?”
“Avon.”
“I didn’t want to disturb your thoughts…whatever they were.”
“That was very considerate of you.”
“I thought so.”
“I’ll go to my cabin.”
“You do that.”
Blake got to his feet, “Don’t you want to know what I was thinking about…?”
“Why break a habit of a lifetime?”
“…I was actually wondering what you were thinking? Standing so quietly as you were. Maybe you saw an opportunity?”
Avon replied, coldly, “The thought did cross my mind…”
“But then you had second thoughts?” Blake studied the man in front of him, convinced that he saw a flicker of a smile on Avon’s stoical features.
“You think too much, Blake, and that’s a dangerous trait.”
“You think so?”
“I know so…”

Avon won't ask him - dangerous to let himself get sentimental - but he does wonder when he finds Blake like this, staring blankly into the middle distance, what it is he is remembering. Or whether he can't remember. Whether he has found a hole in his mind, a spongy deadness where there should be colour, sound, smell.

Avon's memories goad him like splinters, the moments of remembered pleasure now stabs of pain. He's often felt that he'd be glad to forget them, to package up his guilt, his regret and dump it all in some convenient trash can. But to have his past forcibly and clinically erased - that would be worse, he thinks, than castration.

Did Blake also have someone who was more important to him than his own life? Is he recalling fragments of that intimacy, their texture and scent, as he sits there nibbling at the fleshy bed of his nail until it bleeds? Or is it's absence so complete that he is driven to gnaw at his flesh because there must be some sensation, some feeling to take the place of the beige blankness that consumes him?

It's at these times, in these moments, that Avon comes perilously close to pitying the man. Close but not closer.

Blake could as easily be working out a scheme that will result in all their deaths- and, despite his memories, Avon wants to live as passionately as Blake seems to want to die. So he drives the incipient pity from his expression, sharpens his voice and addresses his Fearless Leader, a challenge in every syllable he frames:

" Well Blake, I have the projections you requested. What insane scheme have you dreamed up to endanger us all now?"

He doesn't even notice the comforting hand he lays on Blake's shoulder as he speaks.

Annie, that sums up their relationship perfectly.

Oh, Annie, that's beautiful and so subtle. The hand on the shoulder.

Nice line: "But to have his past forcibly and clinically erased - that would be worse, he thinks, than castration." We still don't know about the memories Blake lost.

Anniew
Thank you Ellen and Rainez. I am glad you enjoyed this. But really the credit goes to Lurena. It's all there in her pic.

Sue and Annie, both your stories are so sensitively written.
Sue, yours is a little ominous as well and excellently captures the mood of Lurena's drawing. Both so well in character. I can see Avon and Blake reading each other's mind like this. Love this line: "For some reason, he now felt duty bound to protect this deluded man from his own delusions." And this one: "Blake was prepared to overlook such enthusiasm, because he had become increasingly aware that the one person he could rely on was Avon, for all his bluster to the contrary."

I started a somewhat ridiculous story but I'm reluctant to break the more serious mood of the excellent stories here. Pfft
(Mine got a little silly. Again.)

Thank you Rainesz for your lovely comments.
I think Annie and I are both sensitive souls when it comes to this character who has been in our lives for almost 40 years.
Grandson, when watching B7 back when he was about 9, used to whisper to me...'I know what Avon is thinking...' and he also commented that 'there's a lot of stuff being unsaid in this series', which is true, which leaves us so much to fill in!!!

Rainesz
Littlesue and Annie wrote such poignant stories. Now here I come in to break up the mood with this ridiculous one. (I warned you I had banter but no plot.) Voilà!

Lurker

"Avon, are you going to keep lurking behind me like that?"

"Always. Am I making you nervous?"

"Always. Why don't you sit down and relax so we can scowl at each other face-to-face?"

"No, thank you. I do my most productive scowling whilst I am pacing."

"And why are you pacing?"

"When am I never pacing?"

"Sit down, Avon. This is getting ridiculous."

Vila entered with his usual drink in hand. "Is Avon lurking again?"

"Yes," said Blake. "I can't seem to make him stop."

"Avon, stop lurking," Jenna said from the pilot's seat.

"Why should I stop when it's such productive lurking?" Avon asked.

"Oh?" Blake said, lifting an eyebrow. "What are you getting accomplished?"

"Testing your levels of paranoia. And annoying you, of course."

"And it's not just because you feel ineffectual?"

Suddenly the ship lurched and Avon toppled to the floor of the flight deck.

"What the hell just happened?" he growled.

Zen sprang to life: +INFORMATION. JENNA STANNIS WAS GETTING IRRITATED WITH BOTH OF YOU AND SHE MENTALLY INSTRUCTED THIS COMPUTER TO MAKE KERR AVON FALL ONTO HIS... POSTERIOR.+

Vila burst into peals of laughter. They all turned and looked at a Jenna, who shrugged. "Zen and I have a bond, remember? I didn't think 'he'd' actually do it."

Avon got up and begrudgingly sat down next to Blake.

There was a moment of silence before he snapped at him, "Stop biting your nails."

"I'm not!"

Jenna and Vila (and Zen) sighed.

With scant hours to go before the deadline...

Trust

For a long time, Avon had managed to suppress all memories of Anna. They were buried deep, locked away in his mind. Thinking about Anna wouldn't bring her back and he couldn't afford the luxury of mourning her, not if he wanted to survive.

But the encounter with Del Grant had brought those memories bubbling to the surface, and now Anna was invading his dreams. It had happened again last night. Asleep, his treacherous subconscious replayed the last time he had seen her: jumbled recollections of cool sheets and warm skin, Anna's voice, her eyes, her smile. In his dream, she was once again watching as he dressed with meticulous care, preparing for his rendezvous with the visa seller.

"Who are you? Why do I never know what you're thinking, Avon?"
She smiled as she spoke. Using his surname was their private joke; a teasing formality belied by their intimacy. She knew him better than anyone else; their unspoken exchanges said more than mere language could convey.

Now he looked down at the man seated on the flight deck's central couch, Anna's words echoing in his mind.

Who are you? Why do I never know what you're thinking, Blake?
But he did know who Blake was, and had already surmised what he was thinking. For all their sparring, he understood Blake better than any of the others.

Another fragment of his dream rose unbidden to the surface; Anna asking: "Do you trust me?"
He remembered his reply: "Oh, I'm afraid I do."

Cally once told him her people's saying: He who trusts cannot be betrayed, only mistaken. Anna trusted him, and had been fatally mistaken. Did she die believing he had betrayed her? Del Grant certainly thought so. Avon paced, paused and paced again, trying to keep his face set in its usual impassive mask.

On the couch, Blake shifted position, still deep in thought and apparently oblivious of the other man's presence. Avon looked back at him.

Do you trust me, Blake?
Did it matter? Yes, for some unshakeable reason, he needed to find out whether he had earned Blake's trust. It was important to let Blake know that despite their differences, this trust would be neither betrayed nor mistaken.

That's superb, Travisina. Beautifully written.

Avon's whole life seems to revolve around the word 'trust' and its implications. When Blake wields it (and seemingly abuses it) he has the most power over him.
I love the way you tied in his memories of Anna. At this point he still believes in his trust for her.
What an ominous last line.

Lurena
Catching up.
@ Rainesz
What silly? Highly entertaining, providing good laughter! Just what I needed, so thank you for writing that banter-scene Rainesz! Besides, I love to see the so much unused Zen-Jenna bond again.

@ Travisina
I feel honoured by your wonderful story to my artwork about the B7 main theme "trust".
Thoroughly thought out use of the given, original lines.
And as Rainesz already said, what an omnious last line! It almost hurts.

Thanks to everyone for your stories (and for the kind comments on mine), and huge thanks to Lurena for the artwork that provided the inspiration!

The June artwork ficlet challenge is now open, and once again thanks go to Lurena for providing the picture. I've a feeling that Trevor Travis is going to find this one especially inspiring Wink
