Here's a thought, maybe Ben Steed is a feminist before his time! He wrote sexis t themes to highlight them?

At least he presents the nastiness as a bad thing!

And therein lies my main objection to this ep - its tone, as it seems to present gang rape as a humorous thing.

Servalan isn't amused at all by Grose and Lector.

I don't see humour portrayed on this subject matter, Ben at least seems to portray it as a distasteful thing.

I think if it had lost the troupers reactions that would have helped. But I don't see it as being being portrayed as anything acceptable. Oh, and Doran doesn't help - but again he's written as a fool.

And there it is.... Boo Hiss away.

And she's never seen again. "We have a present for you..."

But how is it presented as humourous?

It's the overall tone, but it's really when we get Creepy Doran, and Servalan reclining in a fur-lined cave waiting to be raped by... er... Vila.

By the whole tongue-in-cheek, throwaway tone of the episode.

Yay, Doran!!!

Meanwhile on Cygnus Alpha...

Ahh Doran, now this I could see as being the 'distasteful' aspect of the episode.

A violent criminal with issues portrayed as a comedian.

Even when Servie is giving her most distasteful look?

Some good lamps in Grose's dining room. Habitat I reckon. Must of cost a bomb.

Thank you, Huggie - summed up more succinctly than I managed to articulate!

Exactly. He's supposed to be 'loveable' (shudder).

Looks like they are drinking Rose wine. Vila must be so jealous.

Angry Angel
Do you think Grose's greasy hair was an active choice?

I think its pretty neutral, nowhere do I see that people see this as acceptable apart from Grose and Lecter (hardly an endorsement).

I do love Ken Ledsham's designs and the way he does away with the need for his sets to have walls.

It's not in the details but in the overall atmosphere.

Doran is ambiguous. The only time we see him alone with a woman (Chesil), he doesn't do a thing towards her. What he says and what he does is two different things. Grose and Lector are rapists; I'm unsure whether Doran is. Doran comes across as harmless, but not the brightest. There's a real chance he was falsely convicted, and he's no more a murderer than e.g. Gan.

JustBrad
Well, to be fair, our heroes are also a bunch of escaped Criminals... except for Cally and Dayna.
